Player Discussion: Mark S Discussion

As long as shief is wearing a letter and out number one C this should be a tank thread too because this team is not going anywhere
I think if you look 2 years back the majority of these boards believed that Scheifele should be the C, and Wheeler cast into the sun. I don't see any trade coming involving Scheifele that makes the team immediately better, so let's hope he has a rebound season, because this season is one to be forgotten.

Now I am firmly in the keep Mark camp. Just need to surround him with Ehlers and another defense first winger. Not sure who though, don't think the player exists internally.
Agreed. Trading Sheif would be a huge mistake. You don’t find big ppg centres period. I want to trade Wheeler.
Team needs a shakeup and that would do it. I don’t believe he’s untradable. Also defence needs a shakeup also. Not sure what to do. Plonk or Schmidt is out for me. Can’t decide yet.

If we could find a taker then I would also move out Blake and give the C to JoMo. No disrespect intended for Blake but I think it's time to go with the younger guys leading and driving the bus.

Lol. too funny.

Shesh those defensive and depth forward numbers.

JoMo back to 17-18 GAR levels, Schmidt ok for his role but the rest are bad among the established guys. Stanley looking more like Stuart 2.0. Maybe some size biased GM will trade big for him this summer.

Wheeler once again dead last among forwards despite his points. I don't know what to make of him and what should be done with him. He still produces but seems to come at a big cost In other areas despite his effort and production.

Agreed. Wouldn't this be the perfect time to run Perfetti as the 2nd line C???

Terrible luck.

Well he skated again today. I still have some hope that he will be able to play the last three games this year to get some extra confidence going heading into the summer.

Another one of my dubious theories: perhaps Scheif took (is still taking) Dale Hawerchuk's illness and subsequent death harder than we may realize. Dale was his coach, a mentor and a friend. Dale was the guy that recommended to the Jets that Mark was THE guy to pick 1st in the organization's 1st ever draft. They were close, to say they least. Dale revealed in 2019 that he was battling cancer (f*** cancer, BTW). Everyone reacts differently to losing someone close. Maybe it messed (is messing) with Mark's head more than we could realize. Again, just a theory.

I’ve never understood why the majority of the speculation completely ignores this. It fits the timeline and it makes sense.

Having your longtime coach, mentor, and friend watching every game (and potentially giving feedback) was probably an extremely strong motivator. Combine that with depression and it could explain everything.

Of course, this is complete speculation - I know nothing about Scheifele’s personal life or what happens behind the scenes with the Jets. Regardless, I’m sure the loss of Hawerchuk hurt him badly. How could it not?

Been hearing the opinions from different pundents that Chef has actually asked for a trade. I’m not buying this. I can see the Jets trading him, but him asking to be traded?

Why would he ask for a trade? Anywhere he gets traded to that team will hold him accountable for his play, yet if he stays in the Peg , no one ever hold him accountable.

Unless he's holding back the former beast mode version of Schiefele until he gets traded.

Unless he asked for a trade last offseason or right when Maurice quit. It would totally explain his play this year - he spent the whole season trying not to get hurt and anticipating offensive chances... if NHL GMs knew he asked in the offseason, they would easily forgive this season of play.

Jets 1-4 since the Scheifele injury with a goal differential of -11.

Not that I put much weight into "team's record in a small sample since player x was hurt" metrics but I know some here are big fans of these stats and love to point them out when making points against certain players so thought I'd mention it.

Clearly, with our leader in goals against out of the lineup, Wheeler and Dubois stepped up to fill that hole. :sarcasm:

Which supports Chevy's comments about trying to get a 1 - 2 punch at C and not going to turn around and trade one (unless a C comes back I suppose).

Just keeping it real.

We all know if the Jets record without him was 4-1 it would be a big topic of discussion now. I know many here have been demanding 55 be traded and the baton be handed to PLD- a guy whose production so far I must remind folks is pretty much identical to prime Little (who everyone criticized for not being a #1C in the pre-55 era).

Yep but kfc is playing better with pld and in pre 55 era jets 2.0 we didn’t have a superstar winger.

This is where I feel Stastny comes in. He's out there playing smart hockey every night, winning a lot of faceoffs and matchups. He did that last year, scoring a big OT GWG. And who knows how the series with Montreal goes if the Jets win game 1 with him in the lineup.

Scheifele can ask to be traded, but he'd play another year here, I don't think he'd holdout, unless the Autopac commercial was a lie, and he really didn't care about us.

With Stastny still playing at a high level, if the Jets can bring him back, I think it's time to sit down and talk to Scheifele, and say hey we're going to start you out on the wing next season, and we want you to put up the same kind of number Laine got when he was on that line. That would balance the dynamic of trading a top RW for a C again. I mean if Scheifele gets to play more 2-1s because he doesn't have to defend inside the circles, a 40 goal year is a reasonable expectation. I'd say that would increase his value, with one more big contract left.

There are many camps and possibly an echo chamber too on Schiefele.

My grounding assumption is I don’t see him being here on his next contract. With that out of the way I would be curious to see how he responds to a full coaching change. Travelling and getting a break from all the Jets failure drama has tempered my viewpoint.

Like most here I've been a big Sheif fan. But you simply can't have your #1 center play the way he has. He simply won't backcheck. You see him constantly reaching with his stick to check. So either his legs aren't moving, he doesn't want to engage , he can't be bothered or all of the former. He loses a tremendous amount of puck battles in all zones which he never use to.
He is an amazing offensive talent but over the last few years the rest of his play has deteriorated horrendously. Not only does that drastically effect his particular lines play and the PP but it has dragged down the play and culture of the entire team.
Now all that could change with a new coach......Maybe. Do the Jets risk that ?Can the Jets risk that ? I don't think so. The anger and even worse , the apathy of fans is a threat to the franchise in Winnipeg. This is the most important moment in Jets 2.0 history. They need to get it right and personally I don't think they can risk keeping him on the team.

Once again poor Svech , good numbers but you get on the 4th line and play 4 minutes ok and Stanley.....Ooof .
He should play above Sanford and some others for sure….but on any decent playoff team (TBL,Avs, Bruins, Cane, etc)he is 3rd, more likely 4th line. If Svechnikov plays top 6 all year we are a non playoff team next year.
