Player Discussion: Mark S Discussion

I have no idea what has actually or rumoured to have gone on behind the scenes with Scheif, but I get the impression that he needs insane structure to achieve his highest potential. I'm not sure what TNSE provides or what Scheif himself has paid for, but he needs a sports psychologist, nutritionist, trainers, etc. The whole kit and kaboodle. Also needs a coach with stronger principles to keep him accountable and motivated.

I thought of the Wings mostly because of the Michigan connection and they have the assets to give up for a marquee goalie that they will most likely be able to re-sign. It was already suggested the wings were looking for a goalie this summer.

And they got a 3 year stop gap while they let Cossa develop a bit. They're not competing in the next 2 years in that division so there's no need to spend assets on a goalie they can sign for free in 2 years

I think Sheif is just pouting. He has always been horrible defensively and hasn’t put the effort on the ice unless he’s trying to score points.

Pouted after the St. Louis series

Wouldn’t acknowledge how bad he is defensively when fancy stats were brought up.

Pouting during game 1 vs Montreal ( still loves the hit )

Pouts almost every single game when a offensive play gets broken up and gives up on stopping a goal.

Pouting right now for some reason .

This player isn’t bright eyes anymore . He’s entitled and spoiled . Has been taught no accountability from the jets as there is no accountability in our organization, just excuses .

This is on the jets as well

My opinion anyway

Well Murat in his mailbox part 2 post indicated that plenty of NHL executives are noticing Mark's lack of effort. If they are noticing it then you can bet his teammates and our management notice it. Thinks it might be causing issues in the room.

It's got to cause issues. If a player goes out and busts his hump, gives up some offence just to play sound defensively , takes that check just to make a play then watches Sheif the way he plays it absolutely has to cause issues in the room and on the ice. It needs to be dealt with.

Amazing how many people here can read minds, and are sure they know exactly what Scheifele is thinking.

You obviously have not seen the video of the hit. Only the most homerish Jets fans would not consider that suspension worthy. He was out to hurt Evans. Period.
Nah. It was an EN that the Jets were desperately trying to prevent. Evans did not look up from the moment he was behind the net on. Shiefele was going full speed to try and stop the goal. If Evans was doing what 99% of hockey players at the NHL level would do in that situation which is LOOK UP, Scheifele may well have prevented that goal because he would have made Evans pull up or go back behind the net.

People who think a player who has played a very clean game for his entire career and very rarely ever makes contact with another player all of the sudden became possessed to injure Evans just doesn't really get the speed of the NHL game and how quickly that play developed.

Why do you think he's pouting specifically? As in, what is he pouting about?

I’m not sure.

Could be Chevy throwing away the season by not hiring a real coach.

Could be pouting because he’s getting a lot of heat about his d play.. everyone is catching on

Could be pouting because he sees PLD taking his spot .

Could be pouting because he wants out

PerfettI isn’t even good enough to be a center at the WJC but he’s better than Scheifele? Clearly the problem wasnt his offense in that regard. C’mon bro…

While I don't believe Cole will be better then Mark next year or likely the year after using the WJHC argument is juat silly. Team Canads uses natural centers on the wing all the time. Mark Scheifele has played numerous tournaments (WJC and WHC, and World Cup) on the wing despite being a natural center. How team Canada uses players has no bearing on how their NHL teams plan to use them.

Lol. He was clearly only trying to hurt Evans. He was frustrated all game. The fact that you believe he only could have prevented that goal if Evan's "looked up" is hilarious. Definitely no other way he couldn't prevented the goal. I get you're a big Jets fan, but that's why impartial people are in charge of deciding consequences.

Let’s be honest here, if Evans gets back up and isn’t injured Scheifele isn’t suspended and most people would be okay with the hit, if Scheifele got there 0.3 seconds sooner that goal wouldn’t happen.

Like Ryan Whitney said (I’m paraphrasing)….Why isn’t your head up? You’ve got to protect yourself, what did you think everyone in the ice gave up and went for a line change?

Do you actually truly believe when that play developed and Scheifele was skating back he thought to himself “excellent, I can totally injure Jake Evans here”? you must considering you’re stating he was clearly only trying to hurt Evans.

We should all be jets fans here as this is the jets thread not the main board.

I guess all I can really say is that I 100% disagree that he's pouting, especially about hurt feelings about d play or jealousy over PLD.

Literally less than a half second earlier he prevents the goal…

I think we can be guilty on HFBoards Jets sight of lots of things like group think, echo chamber, overeating etc etc. This situation with Mark is way past that. Guys like Ferraro and other commentators (Ray in Buffalo and I think it was Bieksa on HNIC) all calling out Scheifele for his total lack of effort on defense costing his team goals and games. Now Murat in his mail bag......even the most casual fans I know at Jets games are asking what's wrong with Mark "he doesn't seem to be trying". Of course the other GM's know especially if they have pro scouts watching Jets games. This is now the worst kept secret in the league.

I use to be embarrassed for Mark but now I am just pissed off. For the life of me I don't know why they don't bench him but I guess there is a reason. Maybe they don't want to make a bad situation worse when they try to trade him in the off season. I am usually a positive guy, I love the team, use to love Scheif, but this is a mess. Mark, If you want out then do it the right way. f*** even Laine and Kane didn't quit on the team on the ice on their way out and neither of them were wearing a letter.

Hopefully we part ways this off season.

The only thing that would salvage this for me at this point is if there is something pretty significant going on his personal life that is impacting him and that in turn is carrying over to his play on the ice. Mental health illnesses are no joke and if he is (I'm not saying that he is) sufferring from severe depression or something like that then it would explain a lot about his mood and behavior.

If he just wants out and is dogging it then trade him but if he has something else going on I hope he is able to get the help and support he needs.

This kind of crap has probably been causing issues in the dressing room for years now. If someone is t playing up to their ability they should be benched or even scratched. I don’t care who they are. All Schiefele gets is more ice time and the best starts.

That HAS to weigh on the morale of a team.

Don’t get me started on giving up wins to ‘get players going’.

Hopefully it's an off ice issue. I would never wish it on anyone, but, if he is suffering long term effects of covid, is struggling with his mental health and is able to get proper help there are a million reasons why he could be struggling that could allow him to rebound as a Jet.
And if any of those things are an issue, he should be playing less and in less critical situations.

It’s the same as the injured excuse. If you can’t help the team win for ANY reason, then you have to be managed.

If it’s an issue like mentioned, then I agree I hope he gets the help he needs as I wouldn’t wish that on anyone.

But on the other hand this is a professional sports team and if someone is dragging down the team, then you take them out and get them help. You don’t just simply give up on an entire team for the benefit of not hurting a player’s feelings.

But I don’t buy that. I think he’s simply being selfish. He wants his points over team points.

If there is a depression issue then I am with you.

And those impartial people have a wonderful reputation for getting it right, don’t they? Don’t mock someone’s opinion on the issue and then insert the DOPS as your source of credibility.
