Marian Gaborik

If there were no reason to be nervous, it would've cost a helluva whole lot more than what DL paid to acquire him. That being said, he is a must sign. The piece fits and we can only hope that he doesn't ask for the moon during negotiations. Aches and pains seem to hurt a little less when you're happy, it seems.

The cost of getting him in trade was great. He's been a godsend. But to lock him up for 6.5 and 3 years per some peoples assumptions here seems like a bad bet to me.

Wouldn't do more than two years, just wouldn't. Also no more than 6.0, I am sure Lombardi will bust out the charts ETC explaining the Kings Cap situation(to Gabo's agent).

Like that's going entice him to sign. Quite frankly, this team needs Gaborik, and he knows it. He completes us, a high scoring left wing that we have desperately needed for so long. Gaborik is in the driver's seat. The only thing we have going for us in a recent winning tradition and a nice weather. The CAP is not our friend unless Dean can move some more salary. Gaborik is and still will be a 6.5 to 7.5 million dollar player for the next 2-3 years in this market. Nothing less.

That's oversimplified though I tend to agree with your conclusion more and more. I know we're not privy to what Gaborik wants, but I think we can, even with a lower $ amount and term, offer him a prime location (especially given his wife), a competitive team with as good a linemate as he will get anywhere else in the world, some stability knowing he's wanted as DL was after him before, and, by all accounts so far, great relationships with his teammates. I know weirder things have happened, but I don't see him getting away unless someone offers 8 million + (which is, of course, not out of the question in these times).

The funny thing with Gaborik is he's come in and really gelled with this team and fit right in right away. They don't have to rely on him for scoring all the goals like in Minny and they were coming off a fresh cup run within the last 2 years.

I'm sure playing with one of the top centers in the league in Kopitar to help pad his stats will help his decision as well.

It's a two way street.

Dean Lombardi on the Gaborik trade:

Snippet:
The thing about Marian…as much as you knew what he could do as a player, the most important thing was that this was a good teammate that was well-liked. Whenever you have a high profile player of his caliber, to get back that from other players that have played with him was huge. And you go back to that this guy cares.

Now this is something that we can look at. But the biggest thing that makes that work, particularly over a short period, is the way those guys in the room went out of their way to embrace him. Jeff Carter grabbed him, said ‘You’re not staying in a hotel rom. You’re coming to stay at my place.’ He lands in Winnipeg, the first guy that grabs him is Mike Richards. ‘Let’s go out for breakfast.’

His acclimation, being part of this group is such a tribute to the guys in that room that embraced him right away, that made him feel a part of the family, and by virtue of that, impresses upon him, ‘Hey, this is the way we play here. Certain things have to be done. Now go do what few players can.’ Like, you look at his goals, when we did all our work on him going back to when he was in Minnesota, people think those pucks he’s knocking out of the air are luck?

You look back at his tapes – the 40 goal seasons – how many he knocked in like that. That’s a skill. But you’ve got to be a good teammate, and you’ve got to do certain things that every King has to do, now go do those things that make you special. When you see that acclimation happen so quickly, there is no other reason for that than the guys in that room. Like I said, that’s a real tribute to those other 20 guys. Now the guy goes out and performs and gives you something that makes you better.

I expect Gaborik to have a huge series against NY.

The old former player thing.

That being said... Watch out for Boyle.

And to think I, and others use to make fun of Lombardi for his (Culture Change comments).

I like the fact players know, that the Kings play a certain way, and that will be DEMANDED from you.

Example: Any prospect the Kings draft, you always here first "I need to work on my 200ft game this year" Cause prospects know, they have ZERO shot of making the Kings unless they play 200ft.

cap is tight - we have to hope that he knows that and money is not the most important thing to him. If he wants to try and win the cup 2 years running or get to the finals again and go one better if we lose this year. Also if he likes living in LA and likes the team environment etc he could take a discount. The other way is to give him longer that would be liked to lower the cap i.e instead of 2 years at 6.5-7 he may take 3 or 4 years at 5.75
also seeing Carter and Browns cap hits have to help

Wouldn't surprise me if the deal is already done.

It's funny that you say that because I have heard that there is a deal in principal already done and that all that was left was working out the length of term. Both parties looking for the best way to work the deal out so that Gabby gets his due AND the team has everything it needs to do what it has to do as well.

Big difference from players who don't care what their signing does to impact the team they play for or teams that throw money at players without making every necessary consideration.

What a great situation.

Does anyone think DL doesn't give out NTC because of the Ryan Smyth trade debacle? Smyth had a no trade cause, asked for a trade and handcuffed DL forcing him to only trade with Edmonton.

Half this board just fell out of their chair.

Dean has lots of cap room. And it's Gaborik's last chance to cash in big. These were the factors I took into consideration.

There are players in the pipe (Zykov, Prokhorkin, Vey, etc) to eventually "replace" him or the current King that replaces him, but they are a couple years a way.

The alternative then would be overpaying Hemsky, Cammalleri or someone like that. I would rather give Gaborik the $30m instead.

There is no way in hell you give Gabo a Five year deal....That is really stupid. The guy is 33 not 25.

If he won't accept 3 years at 5.8 to 6.2 mill, you let him walk. Let some other team jack their cap situation up by overpaying him.

I hope Dean is able to work something out. Having Gabo for a whole season (as long as he stays healthy) would make that top line deadly. Kopitar might even be able to reach 80 points with him.

The guy really knows how to put the puck in the net. All I know is that we don't go anywhere in the playoffs this year without him, hell of a pick up...
