Marian Gaborik

lol.

Justin Williams, on how Marian Gaborik makes the team different compared to last year:
I believe Marian’s skill set speaks for itself on the ice. But fitting in with a hockey team is not just going out there and playing the game. To be a part of the team, you have to be a part of the team on the ice and off the ice. Marian has fit in quite easily. Whereas looking at his stats, he can be a pompous jerk. He’s actually a pretty nice guy. [Gaborik: Thank you buddy.] He’s fit in real nice with us. I think that’s why he’s had a lot of success on the ice as well, because everybody has taken to him

Thank you buddy.

We are going to have to hope for a little bit of "take a little less for the team and win, yo" for Gaborik.

If he hits UFA, someone will offer him 6-7M a year over 5-6 years.

I think I may have said this earlier in this thread, but depending on what people throw at him, I think we can get at least a 1 mil discount based on the good we have here.

He's got an Eastern Euro friend in Kopitar.
He can live right on the beach near one of the biggest cities in the world, one with insane amounts of culture.
He can play hockey on a yearly contender.
He can still get a buttload of money and is sitting on a ton already.
He can play top-line minutes with one of the greatest all-around centers in the world without having to be THE guy, he's just one of the guys.
You get to be in a world-class organization and know you're wanted, as the GM wanted you previously.

Money talks, but at this stage of his career, you think the guy would choose all the above comforts/amenities over a few extra million--I'm not trying to sell a few extra million short, but the guy has made 65 million over his career.

I think/hope/pray he's made his money and now wants to win

Plus, didn't he want to play here and we wouldn't offer him enough term in the past?

I listened to that Sean Avery podcast and the one thing I took away from it was him saying that Gaborik looks happier than he has ever been. That and Avery apparently wants to blow Lundqvist. But the more important part was Gaborik appearing happy. I've been saying that the whole playoffs and Avery has added this anecdotal piece.

If the guy were that concerned about money, he would have taken the Wild's ridiculous offer and he chose to pursue free agency when there was little chance somebody would pay more than what the Wild were offering.

I hope most of you are right in your predictions he will take some type of discount and sign for 6.0 or less AAV. I think it's a pipe dream, but I hope your right. If he decides to stay, I say a minimum 6.5 to 6.7 AAV, 3 to 5 years. He won't be 33 until mid-season next year. Someone will have to be moved or not re-signed next summer (not this summer).

If the guy was that concerned about money, he wouldn't have spent more than 2 milion dollars building an ice rink in his home town ;)

We don't really know. I argue this with my board rival black63 a lot, I think it's unfair to expect everyone to take pay cuts, but some guys certainly do take pay cuts, so it's possible.

Then again there are guys like Ryan Smyth who move around from city to city chasing every penny possible.

Regardless, whether he takes a paycut or wants maximum value the Kings almost have to pay it, I don't think this is a Cup winning team without the speed and skill he added to the team. The guy scored some massive massive goals in these playoffs. If Marian Gaborik wants maximum market value you make it happen if you are Lombardi.

I don't know where any of you get the idea that Gaborik is going to take a pay cut. Name one player in his 30s in the last 10 years who has taken a contract substantially below his market value to stay on a team. Dean Lombardi would be the greatest salesman in the world if Gaborik takes a penny less than $6 million/year to stay on the Kings. The only way is to sign him for 5-7 years and pay him less at the end, but that's harder to do under the rules now.

$6.5-6.7 million/year for 2-3 years seems about right. Hard to justify paying Gaborik more than Kopitar.

People can't keep using Kopitar as an invisible ceiling that no other Kings can go above.

He signed a long term deal when he was 21, the cap was less and he wasn't UFA eligible. It should have no bearing on what the market is for a 32 year old UFA coming off a dominant playoff who was clearly the teams missing piece.

Plus, Kopitar will be making significantly more than whatever Gaborik gets once he hits UFA in 2016.

I think Gaborik is finally in a place he wants to be, which is be that guy without being relied upon. He's got Kopitar, Doughty, Carter, etc. to take the heat off of him. Too bad for him he wasn't able to be convinced when he was first a free agent.

Yup, he looks happy to be here. With the locker room we have its no surprise, and you can't just buy something like that in the offseason. He fits in here perfectly...

The real question is was the deal already signed early in the playoffs? Meaning everything he did might not even be there. I know I think it was like the Stoll deal a few years ago and is done just waiting to be announced. So it's not a distraction to the team.

I wonder that if we go on to win the cup that Gabby won't then want to get his full pay and move along via free agency.

Clearly we are his best shot at getting his name on the cup today but if we are capable of holding on and winning the cup this year will Gabby consider this mission accomplished and then go after the money.

Completely spitballing and I would bet unlikely but after reading the posts in this thread it was something that stood out there.

Pretty much all speculation.
But I'd venture a guess that Gaborik has been averaging at least 7 million dollars in salary over the last decade ... so maybe he might opt to stick around with the team that is in all likellyhood going to be a contender again in the next couple of years unless there is a huge difference in offered contracts. I mean, if he can get 3 years at 6,5 mill here in LA would he really opt to leave if he was offered say 3 years at 7 mill somewhere else ? I am not saying he should take a discount here, just using the numbers as an example.

I suppose if he's offered a real longterm-deal somewhere (like 5 years at 7+) the financial side of it would probably sway him ... but if the money and term is close why wouldn't he stick with the Kings and try this legit Cup-contender thing a couple of more times?
