If Carter can produce from the left side, Brown gets his playoff legs going, and the D holds up, this could be a useful deal. Still not comfortable with Muzzin/Doughty--missing Scuderi's minutes, none of the SAH guys can carry 20+ minutes in a late-round series.

Carter/Kopi/Gaborik
Brown/Richards/Williams
King/Stoll/Toffoli
Clifford/Lewis/Nolan
Pearson/Vey

Doughty/Muzzin
Voynov/Mitchell
Greene/Regher
Martinez

How many play off games is Gaborik going to under perform in against St. Louis or San Jose or Anaheim before getting hurt?

Only concern is that there's about a 75% chance he'll hit IR before the playoffs. If he can stay healthy, great, but when was the last time that happened? And he hasn't even been playing in the west.

A lot of times injuries are freak things. Look at Justin Williams - he used to be injured all the time. Any player can go through those types of things. Here's hoping Gaborik really finds his niche on the team. I think Dean has made some really great moves at the deadline which put us in a much better position to succeed!

Defensive liability or no, I'm hesitant to break up Carter/Richards, especially after the Olympic break... they just have chemistry on the ice for scoring, and that's the element that was SORELY missing during the 21-game pre-Olympic debacle. JMO, of course.

Well, whether it's Carter or Gaborik on that line, the Kings are going to have defensive issues against SJ, especially on the road. That is why I don't think Pearson will be on that line in the playoffs, they need someone defensively responsible like Brown or King.

Also appeared in every game he could in 12-13 (47 due to trade). Been healthier in recent years other than this season.

If we're only worried about this year (which we are) than the talent he's playing with in LA should make it so that as long as he stays healthy, he will be more productive than Frattin. Not a stretch.

I wouldn't want to be wrestling with the idea of signing him to a 3-4 year deal for 5-6m this offseason though...

I don't find the Jdub injury history analogous, but I could be wrong.

I wonder after this deal if we still have any cap room to address our defense issue for the playoffs...because McNabb is a longterm thing.

Particularly since Gaborik was consistently getting hurt in the lower body while Williams seemed to find a way to have a brand new injury when he did get hurt.

Kings got a great training staff and doctors though, so maybe they can solve the Gaborik problem.

Why do you guys have Gaborik slated as a RW...TSN shows he's both LW and RW...and don't we have a hole at LW?? So, why not this:

Gaborik - Kopitar - Williams
Toffoli - Richards - Carter
King - Stoll - Brown

Not to mention, he is a left-hand shot.

There's always a way to address repetitive injuries. Most of it is preparation/training. I used to have all sorts of problems in this area. The point is: Gaborik is a world class talent and Dean didn't give up much to get him. Could make the difference for us this year. It's exactly the right timing for a trade like this and it's reminiscent of what they did with Carter. Hopefully it works for us.

Hey, no matter how this pans out, people can't say DL didn't TRY to match the 2012 magic that the Carter trade brought to this team, and at far less of a price than JMFJ. It may not pan out, but I like the move on its own merits.

Looks good to me. I wouldn't mind trying Gaborik on 1st or 2nd line. Kopitar and him could be deadly, though. We need a 40 goal guy on the 1st line. Kopitar is a great set up man. Could revitalize Gabby.

King/Stoll/Brown is a nice surprise...it's been working great as a 3rd line!

I'd like to think it's the case that the Kings have better doctors and trainers than the rest of the teams Gabby has played for, but I think they're all pretty top quality. Plus I remember his groin issue back in 08 or something where he had a team of specialists all over the country working on him and through his surgery.

Gabby's problems are one of two things:

1) he doesn't work hard in the off-season.
2) he's legitimately more prone to injury.

I tend to think its the latter and there is nothing training staffs can do to totally alleviate that.

Columbus had to retain all that salary just to make an injury risk Gaborik work for the Kings. It was one issue or the other with the cap going down. It was either trying to add offense, or get a defenseman.

The question is now answered, and the Kings went for the potential offense. At the same time, they did at least add depth to the defense, but it's not the top 6 guy.

And there may be another move in the works. Maybe a depth move.
