Where he can be somewhat valuable would likely be on the PK where he's still strong enough to push guys away from the net also doesn't need to move a whole lot.
And that's an area where the Kings desperately needed someone. Quick and Kuemper get run into/bumped into 5-7 times a game and the Kings d-men do nothing about it. With Regehr and Greene in the past, no one dared go near the Kings goalies. Now it's open season. Just last night on the power play Williams skated by Kuemper untouched forcing him to play deeper in the net and Carolina scored. Regehr would've launched Williams into the second row keeping Kuemper's vision clear.

I still have a feeling Blake isn't done on trading. He's probably not happy with the defense and will try to get another defensemen.

I think he's done with the defense. Hopefully Phaneuf is able to put guys in positions to succeed. Muzzin-Doughty, Phaneuf-LaDue, Martinez-Folin. If that's not good enough then there's not much else he can do right now. Have to focus on the forward group now. Someone posted a lineup earlier in the thread and Clifford on the 3rd line is not going to work.

Ducks fan here gonna chime in on Thompson.

For a guy who's "only" 6'0, he's strong like a bull. I don't know if I'ver seen a bottom six forward win as many board battles as he did in the playoffs last year. He's good defensively and on the PK, is decent on faceoffs and his wheels are fairly good as well. The issue is obviously production. His skill level is probably better than a lot of people think, but it's still obviously his weakness.

All in all, when he's at the top of his game, he can be one of the best 4th liners in the league. A lot of people who are just stats-watching freaked out when Ottawa signed him to that deal. Personally I expected him to get a contract in the $1.25-$1.5 mil range. Me and many fellow Ducks fans wanted to re-sign him and trade Vermette in the offseason.

Thompson is basically a shorter Brian Boyle with less offensive production, but a good player to have centering your 4th line in the playoffs. Should fit the Kings style well.

You're probably looking at

Muzzin- Doughty
Forbort-Martinez
Phaneuf-LaDue

Best case current D line-up:

Muzzin-Doughty
Martinez-Folin
Phaneuf-LaDue

Forbort, Gravel (May be sent down)

Most likely, vomit inducing, Stevens D line-up

Forbort-Doughty
Muzzin-Martinez
Phaneuf-Folin

Gravel,

LaDue sent down

Yup, really liked him when he was on the Ducks. Well, disliked because he was always doing so well against the Kings. Seemed to be nasty too.

Leafs fan here in peace. I don't remember seeing anyone on the leafs board calling Phaneuf "done". He's not that, he's just not worth $7mil per season. That's why I was shocked that we traded him to Ottawa, and didn't retain any salary. I couldn't believe it. Now Ottawa's retained some salary in this trade. You got a pretty good deal. No, he's not the offensive dynamo that he once was when he entered the league (he wasn't that on Toronto either), but he can eat up big minutes, and play a pretty good 2-way game. He just needs to keep his slapshot low. Too many times in Toronto he blisters a slapshot, and it hits the glass, instead of hitting the net.

Hey, if Phaneuf gets it to the glass it's an improvement over Doughty's slapper getting blocked at the point.

So far, Blake seems to be making solid, if not spectacular, moves. Looks like he'll be the type to make sensible hockey trades, giving value for value. Not the type other GMs hang up on immediately. Hopefully, the Phaneuf trade works out well. Really have no where to go but up, though, considering how little Gaborik was being used. Thanks for all the memories, Gabby, and best of luck.

They're very solid and low-risk if nothing else. If Phaneuf sucks, bench him, and we're just back at square one.

Why do you think those players who get forborts icetime would do worse though? Thats a whole lot of maybes.

I don't necessarily, but wouldn't you agree it's a waste of LaDue's abilities getting buried in the d-zone vs. top comp? Wouldn't you rather free Doughty get 5 more ozone starts a game? Etc. They can't all be Paul LaDues, once you get beyond the elite d-men, most depth d-men are specialists of some sort. Forbort happens to be a defensive one and a completely unglamorous one at that. We mistake LaDue/Miller types for being amazing when in reality they're just visually dynamic and get force-fed offensive minutes. There's skill in being a boring defensive defenseman who can play 20 minutes.

I hate being wrong so much and I hate that when I'm wrong it's stupid things that are worse.

Bunch of Sens fans are saying he can be a serviceable 4th D.

Second, if we had to, a first rounder could get us more support on the back end (hint: not a rental).

Just a 1st round pick and nothing else is going to get the Kings more support on the back end worth having? I seriously doubt it.

Phanuef shouldn't be on the top 4.He is to slow.Blake like I said earlier I'm hearing is looking for another defensemen. We'll see between now and the deadline.

You're completely out to lunch if you think we can afford ANOTHER defenseman in terms of both assets and roster spots.

Martinez on RHD...

This only works if Gabby doesn't retire, BK. If he retires, we got ****ed

Trout-

If he retires then so be it as there are no guarantees he would have retired if he was still a King. He may want to retire since he is in Ottawa now but, in reality, he will most likely get bought out. I don't feel that we get screwed if he retires because I don't think he would retire if he was still an LA King. At worst, he'd get the Scuderi treatment in Ontario or they would have to buy him out.

In my opinion, AEG is tired of paying people to not play or coach the LA Kings. Instead of simply buying Gaborik out, Ownership just signed off on spending more money in real dollars so they can have a player that Management is telling them can help the team.

It's not a good sign for the "blow it up" crowd, but you have to appreciate that AEG is agreeing to spend more money here. Of course, they really want to make the playoffs, get some home playoff games and drum up more season seat interest but I'll take that over Melnyk making trades simply to save himself money.

Well, I like this more than L. Schenn on our team... he'll balance out our defense well. We need it.

Make another move Blakey

Why do you think those players who get forborts icetime would do worse though? Thats a whole lot of maybes.

Because increased ice time + increased responsibility leads to overall decreased performance when factoring in fatigue and tougher matchups.

We give OTT $4mil in dead money (retention plus Gabby buy-out), and we acquire a player we hope can fill the top 4. If he fills the top 4, Blake hit a home run, shedding Gabby and only losing Shore. I am not team Blake (ardent DL supporter), but if this legitimately shores up (no pun) our top-4, I will bow down

Gabby's potential buy out is spread out, so my numbers are probably off lol

Finally Gaborik is gone... Thanks for everything in 2014, but come on DL, that contract was a huge mistake the moment it was signed. Since then, he's been 50% on IR and 50% a zombie on the ice.

However: Phaneuf? Really? 32 years old, also signed until 2021. He will unnecessarily take away playing time from Gravel, Fantenberg, Clauge. (not counting LaDue because RHD)

Which is the biggest complaint I have.

The roster got older and slower. So much for all the folks around here clamoring for youth and speed in the lineup. Suppose to be transitioning away from Lombardi/Sutter type players.

Blake just added two on the wrong side of 30 years of age.
