I agree with the OP that linking M Pettersson to Vancouver makes a lot of sense. And Vancouver has the pieces that I can see the Pens wanting:

To Pittsburgh: Hoglander, Aman, Forbort, Briesbois, 2027 6th round

To Vancouver: M Pettersson, 2025 5th round pick

Literally why would the Penguins do this

Hoglander and a 2nd.

I don't think they'd go for Hoglander with his contract and production tbh

I'm not a huge fan of the player however his contract is perfectly fine for a middle six 35 point forward.

But why would a rebuilding team (or should be rebuilding team) like the Penguins be interested in that?

The simplest deal is Elias Pettersson (D prospect) and a 2nd for Marcus Pettersson. Fills a big need for Vancouver and gives the Penguins a good prospect replacement.

Sure, that's fine too. It was more because of Dubas' quote. Apart from Willander or Lekkermaki I'd add any Canucks prospect to a 1st for Petterson.

Why would a rebuilding team dilute Jake Guentzel's trade value for what they got?

Avs need him. CDH/Kylington/Ludvig not the best on the 3rd pairing, and Toews is labouring. Coach even said Toews will be taking maintenance days here and there. If it wasn't for Four Nations Cup, he'd go for surgery now I think.

Pettersson for Kylington + Rangers 2nd + prospect(s)/picks

Yeah. I think the realistic answer to this is...they're not really rebuilding. I very much doubt that was what was pitched to Crosby and Co. I don't think that ownership group including Mario would allow them to just deliberately throw away the final years of his buddy Crosby's career like that.

It's far more likely to be a "retooling attempt". Which i think almost certainly impacts the type of return Dubas is mandated with looking for in a Pettersson trade, or really anything he does here.

So you say the pieces the Pens would want and then immediately list a lot of what they wouldn't?

Hoglander I think would be on that list. Forbort as well for cap reasons. But Aman? No. Absolutely not Brisebois either and a 6th rounder? That's a truly garbage return.

I'd rather do this. Depends on what the prospect is but I'd also make that a conditional 1st if Pettersson re-signs, if not, then that Rangers 2nd.

Which is fine to a contender. But a team looking to rebuild and retool, Hoglander isn't worth being the main piece for Pettersson unless it's just a pure cap dump for Lekkerimaki to be a regular and to add at the deadline and sign someone like Pettersson if they could get him.

Hoglander wouldn't be the main piece, I'd chalk him up as a cap dump if the Pens and Nucks are talking and Hoglander's name is involved.

The prospects the canucks would be willing to part with aren't even worth the discussion as we know the untouchables are few and in that pool, for a good reason. It would need to be a guaranteed 1st rounder in that deal to start.

Dubas gets bent over in every negotiation be it free agency signing, contract extension, or trade. So I'm a little worried about what he's going to actually get back.

But Marcus Pettersson's metrics are much better than the rest of the Pens dmen, despite the team being absolute garbage this year. Like others have said, a 2nd+nhl ready prospect or a 1st is what I'm expecting.

I'm all ears if you have thoughts on Koivunen's ceiling being anything beyond a bottom sixer at the NHL level.
Koivunen is a boom-or-bust player, and that's due to his skating. If he brings his skating up enough, his ceiling is a top-line forward. He has all the other relevant skills.

The same reason Dubas got Bunting back in the Guentzel trade? He's not very good at his job.

Bunting wasn't a major part of the value in that deal, though. I totally believe Dubas would take back a NHL player to "stay competitive" in a deal, but taking back Hoglander as a big chip doesn't seem to line up with that. If Hoglander would be in the deal, I'd still expect a 2nd and a prospect to be included on top of him.

I could see something like Hoglander, Mynio and a 2nd for Pettersson and Beauvillier making some sense, and I don't really mind that deal on paper.

We don't need all of that.

For the love of God just send us a 1st round pick. We've only had like 4 of em in the past 15 years.

Pickering is here and will be the LD future. Graves is unmovable but not playing all that bad vs last year. Add in a couple younger guys like shea and Petts being moved for a nice package at the TDL makes sense as Dubas is not negitiating for an extension.

Canucks just got rid of Beauvillier
