Crazy to thing what could have been if he didn't have the eye injury and then the concussion(s).

He was going to be a stud. Better yet, he was a stud. Just imagine him and a prime McD.

The worst part is the management of the team not seeing what the post injury Staal brought and chose to commit to Staal instead of Stralman.

Their choice of anyone over Stralman was their downfall. Terrible decision that set off a chain reaction.

Staal had NOTHING to do with Stralman. The choice was between Staal and MDZ. When AV forced Del Zotto out of town and Moore didn't rise to the occasion, they really had no choice but to re-sign Staal.

Stralman was more a combination of the Girardi extension and Sather's desire to get Boyle in here.

I still want to hold off on any big moves until a new coach comes in. Staal has literally never looked comfortable in AV's man to man system. A lot of people blame the eye injury, and that may well be the case, but it is also telling that Staal's game fell off a cliff starting at the exact moment AV arrived. A season with Staal on the 3rd pair and back in a zone defense might make him a bit more useful as a player.

No thank you.

His skating has fallen to ECHL level and his puck skills are worse.

He needs to go now.

I don't disagree, but he's untradeable, and his buyout is uglier that I'd realized (we'd have a cap his for close to a decade, and dead cap in the ~4mil range in what would have been the last two years of his contract). I don't see a lot of options.

It's not dead cap if he isn't here. You'd be saving in those years.

I'm hoping for retirement but if not, a buyout is the best option.

Of the players that are problems on D, Staal has taken the cake. Girardi looked much better in the playoffs, maybe he was healthier, maybe he rose up, but if we can't ditch both I'd much rather try and work in a replacement on the top pairing and deal with Girardi for another year. I'm sure Holden and/or Klein could be traded, although I'm in the camp that isn't ready to give up on Klein specifically. Think he never really got to be comfortable this year with the injuries and the timeline on which they happened.

keep G for at least another year on 3rd pair!

Trade Staal with money retained!

Try and trade Nash at 50% and get Montour

Mcd--Montour
Skjei-Smith
Bereg-G
7th D

make a splash if available with stepan for another center on ELC and call it a day..

but personally id look to blow it up and just trade;

Stepan for Trouba
+
McDonagh for Mackinnon but thats just me

These will like never happen with the exception of maybe McDonagh for Mackinnon and when I sit and think about that Colorado probably wants a younger player.

Nash probably doesn't return Vatanen at this point, Montour is a non starter.

I`m done, done, and done - a bag of pucks is better value at this point.
Gorton need to use a buyout in my opinion, or talk him into a move to Carolina Hurricanes, or Vegas for future picks.

Girardi might have looked better compared to his usual awfulness, but he was still a negative. We need to get rid of him and Staal. Klein should be moved for picks, and Holden we could keep.

I winced opening this thread...
Can someone say buyout?

I'd rather try and trade with retention. Max retention on his contract would be something like $2.85M. That's not THAT much more than his buyout number in the first two years, and it's LESS than his buyout number in years 3 and 4. I'd rather carry that for four years than have dead cap for 8 years. A cap floor team might take a flier for Staal at 50%, particularly since his actual $$ goes down with each year towards the end of the contract.

I am just anticipating him being in the line-up, wearing an A on his jersey, being regarded as "a great guy" and "a mentor to the younger players". I think the chances of him being our next captain are better than the chances of him being bought out this summer

I overreact here no doubts about that, but he just don`t fit in AV system on our blueline - if he continue to coach here next season. I`ve notion that AV need a defender with better puck handling skills and speed compare to M. Staal.

Man, Staal is a difficult one.

A buyout affects this team for the next EIGHT years. I don't see it. I don't see another team being dumb enough to take him, even at 50%, and even if we get that deal there's nothing saying that Staal would approve such a move.

The Rangers are totally ****ed with this contract. Totally.

You offset the buyout penalty with players on ELCs. Bereglazov + Staal cap penalty costs less than keeping Staal, and you add a player that should be more effective going forward. No, you don't fully remove his cap hit, but you minimize the hurt.

The Brooks article makes me more certain he's getting bought out. Brooks is just prepping the ground. Gorton is bringing in too much young defensive talent, and there's likely more to come. Gorton will try to see if he can find a taker, but, when he comes up empty, Staal gets bought out.

I hope they do it, but from an organizational standpoint it's just not something the Rangers normally do. He's a total liability and it's insane to me how long AV kept throwing him and deer in the headlights Holden out there.
