IMO, I would still buy out Girardi. Staal is a bottom-pairing guy as is. Play him 10-15 minutes every night and he'll look better. He was actually good enough at the start of last season, but the minutes over the course of the season were silly on his legs.

To me, the value of buying out Dan Girardi with a shorter cap penalty instead and finding Ryan McDonagh a new partner outweighs buying out Staal and dealing with that penalty longer.

McDonagh-____
Skjei-Smith
Staal(10-15 MPG)-______
Graves(Rotates for Staal)-Kampfer/Clendening (?)

That's palpable. It's not ideal, but if the Rangers land a great player through FA or a trade who is similar in age to McDonagh (25-28), I think they'll be able to handle the minutes.

Gorton: "So, any interest in Marc Staal?"
Other GM: <loud noise as if phone fell and laughter can be heard>
Gorton: "You there?"
Other GM "Did you just ask me if I'm interested in Staalsie?"
Gorton: "Yes, I did"
Other GM <howling with laughter> "I...gotta...<laughing> go.... <laughing> meeting..."

Rinse/Repeat

You honestly think Gorton would start a conversation with another GM about trading for Hayes and retaining salary on Staal's contract by first asking if there's any interest in Staal?

I just realize they are likely screwed at moving both G and Staal so even if they can move Staal at 50 I'm happy

You'd be lucky if Staal even got that gas mileage.

Agreed.

Staal at 50% ($2.85M) isn't terrible either.

As nice as it is to have moved on from Girardi, it'd be doubly so if we moved on from Staal too. I'm starting to feel like this isn't the plan, but has anyone heard any rumblings or think it's still a possibility?

No room for Staal? McD Shattenkirk, Skjei, Smith, Holden DeAngelo

We'll see. For now, Staal is on the team due to contract, whereas Holden is the easier of the two to move.

Part of me wonders if, should we get a second buyout window, if Gorton would even think of pulling the trigger...

Too much dead cap space.

Staal and Holden will be interesting to watch during this offseason, for sure.

Wouldn't surprise me if in the next couple days Gorton doesn't talk to him about waiving his contract and accepting a trade somewhere or other.

Something has to give.

I think its Staal or Holden. Holden would be easier to get rid of, Staal would make more sense to get rid of. Getting rid of both would be very good.

We have way too many players for those last 3 roles on the defense. Bereglazov has a KHL clause, I assume DeAngelo wasn't traded for to start in the minors, Graves is now NHL ready, Pionk didn't come here to be AHL fodder for his whole career. And then we have some more depth coming that is maybe a year or two away.

I agree. Something's gotta give. Hard to know where the chips will fall on this one.

Holden/Staal+ for Galchenyuk. Montreal needs some LD. We need a C. Julien is not a fan of Galchenyuk. Probably a pipe dream, but it makes sense for both teams.

I think it's easy to know where they fall. Holden will be the one to go. Let's face the facts...Stall has a FULL-NMC...no list of teams to be traded to. He is 100% protected...and too expensive to buy out. Staal is here to say, for better or worse.

Unless Dolan puts in an offer on his house in exchange for waiving his NMC ;)

If Staal manages to stick around this is without much doubt his last year. There's several NHL'ers in front of him and several others below him that are going to push him out of the way.

But.....he might not get a lot of interest around the league so it may be that he gets bought out as well next summer.
