I remember reading about the depth perception issues too.

What's the dead space cap amount if he is bought out now vs. the future? I forget.

Apparently this year versus next, the difference is only like $100k per year.

really the only team i could realistically see Staal waiving for is Toronto..halfway point between Thunder Bay and New York (essentially)

Though they have no cap space..

Staal for JVR would be great for the rangers..but why would Toronto do that.

Staal @ 50%?

Well, there has been conflicting information on the details of Staal's contract. CapFriendly has it listed as NMC throughout. This is what I've been going by.

However, Spotrac and Blueshirt Banter have it listed as changing to a modified NTC beginning in 2018-19. I think this is the information most people on the forum have been going by.

I emailed CapFriendly, and asked them to fix Staal's contract details if they are wrong. They stand by their description of his contract, and feel the other sites have it wrong.

I'm gonna go with CapFriendly on this one. They seem certain.

No one's gonna trade for Staal. Try to trade him, maybe include a prospect, but I don't think anyone is taking his contract.

I'd be fine using him as the expensive 7D for the rest of his contract, but I don't think AV will agree to that.

I really don't like the idea of using a buyout.

I agree that a buyout is not good. Especially the long term cap problems combined with G's buyout. Id rather loose some picks trying to move him (not 1st rounders).

You can have a NMC and yet a modified NTC at the same time iirc. He can't be waived all 6 years.

Yeah I don't buy this emerging idea that a first round pick is worth gaining cap space. You use those first round picks to develop into strong contributors on ELCs who help mitigate some of the more unwieldy contracts on the team.

Under normal circumstances, I'd agree to keep Staal around as a 6th/7th d-man for a year. But, knowing this coach, that's not likely to happen. Buy him out.

ESPECIALLY on a team like ours, where the cupboards are bare of good prospects (outside of a couple of pieces).

I think the value of a pick 20th or later, let's say, is worth being able to clear $5.7m off the books for the next three years (using next off-season as a jumping point of this dicussion).

If you turn the value from players to money, how many first round picks 20th or later are going to instantly give you $5.7m, or $17.1m over three years right away? Gain $5.7m of cap space and remove a heavy negative on-ice presence at the cost of the 20th pick or later? I take that every time.

They should just buy him out

They have too many NHL defenders as it, AV is going to play him top 4 if not top pair. The turtle will be back in full force and Staal will be prominently featured on it. Which may work somewhat until the playoffs where it will ultimately fail like it always does.

Buy him out now. 4 years of cap savings that are greater than the Holden contract. If he's a 5-6 dman, total waste to have him fully on the books.

Might as well wait another season before buying out Staal.

Apologies.... I had the wrong number for the first year of the buyout in that chart.

Here's the correct one. Also updated the original post

It does make more sense to buy him out next year. The cap space gains ar esmall but you cut off that 2024-25 year of dead cap space.

I disagree, the dead space in 2024-25 is so tiny vs. the savings you get this year. Buy him out now.

We need a coach with the stones to bench him and then that would force management to look for a solution???? Just my two cents.

Edited to add: How do we know Gorts is trying to get rid of him at this point?

I know AV has been far from perfect, but there's no way he doesn't keep Skjei-Smith together and put Shattenkirk on the top pair with McDonagh, at least to start the season.

I think he liked Holden-Staal together, so the only concern would be that they're getting more minutes than Skjei-Smith, similar to the playoff series against Ottawa. Crossing my fingers that it was more Beukeboom than AV on those decisions. :help:

I think all the dots just connect. Bought out Girardi, brought in DeAngelo as a good bottom pair guy, Holden is still here, didn't exactly seem to try and convince Klein not to retire.

Even if there's no immediate need for the cap space, he has to be thinking down the road to the deadline if a team like the Sharks falters and someone like Joe Thornton is available as a rental.
