Yea it sucks, I was at the game when Staal took the puck to the eye sad scene and the start of the decline...bolded is key, they were fair deals at the time. People will come back with the hindsight of how we could have used the money but at the time they were fair deals for home grown guys who we weren't going to just let walk.

Disagree, they were always bad deals. Staal's extension came well after the eye injury. Neither guy was near the top of his game by the time management signed them to these albatross contracts.

So what do you do then? Go out in free agency and overpay even more in terms of years and cap hit? Make Dylan McIlrath one of our top 4 d-men from the time of the deal to date? Trade someone like JT Miller for a d-man? What's the alternative, because we can sit here and nitpick about Staal's footspeed and long strides but someone is gonna have to eat those 20+ mins on one of the better NHL teams in the league over the course of Staal's tenure, since the extension or otherwise.

They never should have extended either guy. They kept Girardi and let the much better Stralman walk. They kept Staal and let the much better Yandle walk. And quality, undervalued defensemen are always on the move if you know where to look. Pittsburgh got Schultz and Cole for next to nothing. Montreal got Petry for a 2nd and a 4th.

As for who gets the minutes, Staal is probably our worst left shooting defenseman on a team that currently has five left shooting defensemen. McDonagh and Skjei should be getting the top four minutes on the left side. Smith should be playing on McDonagh's right. Skjei and Clendo clearly have great chemistry. Holden and Klein make for a decent third pairing if Klein ever gets healthy.

marc staal has been terrible and it doesnt matter what side hes on. hes been awful.

hes only playing this much so that when girardi returns, dan will look like scott stevens.

My plan was to trade for Yandle and trade Staal.

Last night there was a play in our own zone that defined present day Staal as a player for me.

Staal had the puck and a ton of space to make an outlet pass in our zone and he just held onto the puck for an inordinate amount of time and let the forechecker close down on him. Then he turned towards the boards and forechecker pressed him up against the boards and was about to create a turnover. JT Miller came all the way back and took the puck from the scrum and skated it out of the zone.

Staal is 1-2 seconds slow on almost every play on the ice. Defensive zone, offensive zone, neutral zone it doesn't matter. He is simply slow in making decisions.

If he continues to play at this level and get the amount of minutes he is currently getting we are going to really have a difficult time winning a playoff series.

There was a play last night where we were breaking out of our zone. Staal had the puck all alone in our zone. Instead of skating out of the zone like any player with a semblance of skill, he awkwardly pushed the puck like 5 feet forward to Zucc, and managed to misplace that pass 2 feet wide. It was the epitome of our defense this year.

I will work in a shoe factory in Thailand for the rest of my life to make sure he retires tomorrow

This is ridiculous. I'm sorry, but Marc Staal is a top shutdown D in this league, and the hate he gets here is BS. The guy plays his heart out every game, and Dominates opposing forwards(like on Gallagher)!
Staal has a home here as long as he likes, the guy deserves it.

LMFAO
