Holden has been the bigger issue on that pairing in atleast the last few weeks. Think the biggest issue is that they just dont complement eachother at all, split them up and maybe both look like NHL D-men again.

Looked like an NHL level player yesterday. Couldn't move the puck at all, but the rest of his game was pretty solid.

When the Rangers sign Shattenkirk in the off-season, Staal can be reunited with Clendening on the 3rd pairing, and his deficiencies can be kept to a minimum.

It's really sad how much his injuries impacted his career. The fact he can still be relatively effective while playing half blind isn't unprecedented (Berard) but it's still kinda impressive.

I have always been a Staal fan but he looks like he is skating in cement lately.

Staal has been in a league of his own since the new year in terms of being terrible.

I'll take last night's Staal for the rest of the season though.

Maybe ur right, still think it would benefit both if they were split up.
I know Skjei-Clendo has been good but i'd try Staal-Clendo, Skjei-Holden.

Staal battling Chara down low was vintage Staal. I really wish he could somehow revert back to even half of that player. Vintage Staal was amazing.

He's very soft now.

That's his decline.

Girardi it's more of a physical + speed of the game getting faster type of deal.

With Staal, it's mishandling pucks and soffness.

Believe it or not, Staal being the worst player on the ice these past few games has gotten really old

It's like every time a player I'm not particularly fond of is gone or hurt, someone has to step up. It's almost admirable.

Slow is one thing but where is the effort?

He looks like a Sloth out there. Not sure if it's lack of effort, or just a slow, broken body. He looks terrible. As some people have said, the only thing he does well is hound people with that long reach. He has nothing else going for him. It's been like this for a long time now.

It's really really hard to watch him pivot from backwards skating to forward skating to try and get to a dumped puck and move it quickly and to right option on the breakout.

Him pivoting and exploding into a forward stride is like watching a tractor trailer make a uturn.

He still has a long reach and frame for limiting carry ins but Jesus it's brutal when the puck is dumped in his corner and when he has to be the primary guy to get the puck out.

He's an albatross. Not much else needs to be said. He could be a bottom pairing defenseman playing 8-10 minutes a night to rest the actual defensemen, but with his contract, it just gets sad.

If Clendening is a regular on d-man on this team next year on day 1 I think we have a problem.

It's one thing when you get inconsistency from a d-man who's aged a bit and gone through injuries and you opted to re-sign rather than let them walk when their career contract was due.

It's another when you decide a fringe 6-7 d-man is an every day guy without a doubt.

He's proved more than enough that he's at the very least an NHL regular in his time here.

Stop with Adam Clendenning. He is gone after this year. As far as Staal goes he was playing fairly decent this year but after that third concussion he suffered he has looked bad. All he is a stick. Doesnt used his body and a step behind especially since his return. Adds zero offense. But we are stuck with him.
