Proposal: Marc Staal

Going back to Staal, he is a number 1 signed to a sweetheart of a deal, is part of the core. If Carlina wants him, they have to pony up.
If Sather puts him on the trade block, i can think of many teams that would want him on their blue line and would be willing to pay up.
The notion that we have to accept Carolina's offer or he walks is a stretch.

What team is going to trade valuable assets for Staal knowing he's gonna leave in 2 years? None.
Why is this such a hard concept to grasp?

You are speculating on his intentions in 2 years, which is fine but his true intentions will be determined when the team starts discussing an extension. Until that determination occurs, it's merely speculation.

Why can't his true intentions be determined now? Just as plausible.

Based on what?
Nothing he has said so far indicates he is not happy in NY.
Both sides have merit to it. Thinking he wouldn't want to leave to play with his brothers, thinking that's not a possibility is childish.

The point was whether he has the offensive game to be a number 1, the answer is yes.
You changed the subject to "true" number 1's, nobody else did.

Sorry, you can't declare Staal a "#1" defender by pro-rating his stats, and then dismiss the criteria of what makes a #1 defensemen as "off-topic".

If Staal is traded to the Canes, I'd be willing to bet the 1st rounder will be the "second piece" in the deal. An NHLer needs to come back. As much as I'd like that NHLer to be Faulk, I think he's an untouchable for the Canes.

That being said, I think the top-5 players in this draft (Jones, MacKinnon, Drouin, Barkov and Nichushkin) are all pretty close to being NHL ready. They might not help next season, but 2014 is certainly a real possibility. So if the Canes can stay in 5th, that pick is very valuable.

I haven't paid much attention to some of the other players but Jones is NHL ready? Lol what do you watch man.

He made some terrible mistakes during the WJC I really don't understand how you can consider him NHL ready.

I said "close" to NHL ready. I say that because the WJC wasn't the only time I watched him play, but even then, he had some dominant performances during that tournament. In fact, his performance at the WJC propelled him to a #1 ranking on most draft boards where as prior to that he had been stuck at #2 behind MacKinnon.

For what its worth, I dont think the Rangers have a true #1 defenseman by NHL standards.

I think they have 3 or 4 VERY good #2 defensemen, which works out just fine.

You type as if this is the sole factor in deciding whether to trade for someone which means you are simultaneously ignoring why teams would trade foe a player of his caliber despite his remaining years. Not to mention it's unfounded speculation...

The argument started with your bringing up a true #1 into the discussion, I dismissed it as off topic.

I see that you don't use the "true" #1 measuring stick in your latest post, so we made progress.

I'm one of the few 'Canes fans that is willing to offer a lot for Marc (most of the others are content to wait in FA or lowball).

But I can guarantee that JR will never do Faulk+Tlusty+Lotto pick. Faulk is off the table, because trading him for Marc because it doesn't fix the main issue on our team (lack of one more competent top 4 defender).

Something around Tlusty + Lotto pick would work if the deal were done in the next 3 weeks. As already pointed out, the closer Marc inches to FA, the less other teams will be willing to give.

This is all assuming that Marc indeed does want to play on the 'Canes, of course.

Related question for a Canes fan - do you see Jared being an NHL player long-term? With all the talk of all four brothers playing together, I feel like Jared is getting lost in the Marc speculation. Is there a solid chance of him being an NHL regular?

Tlusty + #5 + Murphy for Staal and a kicker (pick, prospect, ect)

In the 2005 draft,Carolina had Staal rated right behind Jack Johnson. Carolina got tired of waiting for Johnson to turn pro so they swapped him for Gleason.

Being in Carolina was what Jordan wanted.

"To be able to play alongside Eric was important," said Staal. "Pittsburgh offered that deal, but being able to play with Eric would have been slim and none [had he signed it]. It was a time in my career when I could make decisions for myself."

Once Staal turned down the offer, Shero didn’t waste any time.

"It didn’t make sense for me to wait," said the Pens GM. "I didn’t want him going to the end of the contract. There were smoke signals about Carolina. I have no problem with what happened. Jordan handled it with class, and I have nothing but good things to say about him. He had six great years here."

Veteran Carolina GM Jim Rutherford had read this situation beforehand and approached Shero about his interest last spring. He had heard rumors in the past that the Staal brothers had always wanted to play together in the NHL, so he focused on his target. But Rutherford didn’t think it was going to happen as quickly as it did.

"I was a little bit surprised to get the call," Rutherford told ESPN.com this week. "About three hours before the draft, Ray phoned me and said he was going forward and making the move. It all happened really quick. But we had had several [internal] conversations and meetings about the possibility of a trade, so we were ready to offer what we ultimately offered in order to acquire him."

None of the Rangers beat writers has asked Marc about Carolina?

I would say no, based on his AHL career.

Based on the two games in the NHL I've seen, we could put him in our bottom 6 and he would do no worse than LaRose, Westgarth or Bowman. And he brings size and a willingness to use it that none of those players have.

So I could see him dressing in our bottom 6 next year, if for nothing else a combination of nepotism and money.

That said, when you say that Carolina has 3 brothers on the team, it's really 3 brothers in the system (and even that is in doubt).

That would be steep, but JR has a habit of overpaying for players he wants (Jordan Staal, Glen Wesley, Rod Brind'Amour, etc.). I would think long and hard about it, and I could see him doing it.

But don't post this on the trade board or on the 'Canes forum. Other 'Canes fans will rip this to shreds.
