Proposal: Marc Staal

I would say no, based on his AHL career.

Based on the two games in the NHL I've seen, we could put him in our bottom 6 and he would do no worse than LaRose, Westgarth or Bowman. And he brings size and a willingness to use it that none of those players have.

So I could see him dressing in our bottom 6 next year, if for nothing else a combination of nepotism and money.

That said, when you say that Carolina has 3 brothers on the team, it's really 3 brothers in the system (and even that is in doubt).

Thanks for the info.

I feel like the novelty of having the brothers is such a big draw, but really, putting that aside, Carolina would probably be wanting Staal as a UFA anyway, but without his brothers, they wouldn't have a leg up over anyone else.

The reason I (and I'm alone in this ) want to trade for Staal is because he immediately makes our defense a tier higher than "passable at best".

Window of opportunity is a big discussion in this thread. For the 'Canes, we have around 5 years before that window closes (unless Jordan shows that he is, in fact, a number 1 center). Waiting 2 years for Marc, if he indeed does want to play with Carolina in FA, is too long and too much of a risk.

And you're right, without his brothers, Carolina would have nothing that the Rangers do not. And the Rangers have considerably more.

Yeah, it's an interesting situation in large part because the two teams' windows overlap. I don't think it's unreasonable to say that NYR's window ends with Hank starts to decline. So, while trading Staal soon for maximum return might be best for NYR in terms of max asset managment, the value of having Staal around during the team's window is high in itself. For Carolina, it's a similar situation. To max assets, it'd make sense to let him hit FA if he does indeed want to sign there, but in terms of taking advantage of their window, it'd be best to trade for him ASAP.

As much as I wish Staal's future with NYR had absolutely no question marks, it'll be very interesting to see how this all plays out.

That would be steep, but JR has a habit of overpaying for players he wants (Jordan Staal, Glen Wesley, Rod Brind'Amour, etc.). I would think long and hard about it, and I could see him doing it.

But don't post this on the trade board or on the 'Canes forum. Other 'Canes fans will rip this to shreds.

Has Murphy played games for the Canes this year? How has he looked?

Bob McKenzie reported that the Rangers getting in on Jordan pushed Carolina to make the deal. He's not one to sensationalize anything.

I think family was a priority for Jordan. Just like I think it will weigh on Marc's decision.

When have active NHL brothers NOT played on the same team over an extended period of time (a full season or more)?

Seems to be much more common than rare, I suspect the 'growing up a hockey family' brings people pretty close. So Marc 'leaning' toward wanting to unite with his brothers feels like a pretty good bet to me?

He played 7 games here this season as an emergency call up.

His defense was better than I expected, though I expected something between nonexistent and awful.

He was excellent if you put it in the context that "Hey, this guy was playing against 16 year olds yesterday!". NHL-wise, it was barely passable.

Good in transition, had a tendency to lose his man watching the puck (which is expected), but that improved over the course of his time here. Lost some board battles, but didn't get owned as often as I thought he would. Reaction time was also bad at first, but that's to be expected, and it improved over the course of his time here.

He'll be in the NHL next year because our defense blows and the org. will want him to "save" it. Which is a mistake IMO.

In the 2005 draft,Carolina had Staal rated right behind Jack Johnson. Carolina got tired of waiting for Johnson to turn pro so they swapped him for Gleason.

None of the Rangers beat writers has asked Marc about Carolina?

Jordan Staal was the 2nd pick in the '06 draft. Bobby Ryan went 2nd right before JMFJ in '05. Pitt did everyone a favor (esp CHI) in '06 taking Staal instead of Toews. Could/should have been Malkin '04, Crosby '05, Toews '06 for Pitt.

Wow. I never really thought of it that way. That would have been absolutely ridiculous.

Back in 2003 they chose Marc Andre Fleury ahead of Eric Staal. So it could've been Eric Staal '03, Malkin '04, Crosby '05 and Toews '06....

If Staal passes medical and has a healthy playoffs then I want at least Faulk and a 1st.

True, but going with a G over a C is totally different. J Staal and Toews play the same position and I believe that Toews was widely considered the better prospect.

Colorado wins 1st overall. They will take Jones. Carolina stays at 5. Looking at teams 2/3, I personally don't think trading up would be out of the question.

Number 5 pick and Mackinnon is still available. Will Sather trade staal for their number 1 pick and additional player??? LOL

If the Staal's family's only goal is to play together on the same team no matter what I won't think much of them.

If myself and my brothers all made the NHL it would be an absolute dream to join up on the same team.

I obviously want Staal to stay a Ranger but I wouldn't begrudge him one bit if that was a life goal of his, nor would I think any less of him for it.

Just my 2 cents.

I agree, but I just hope he's 100% upfront about it with the team this offseason.

The Rangers are in a great position. Bad news to all the fanboys who fall in love with prospects the day theyre drafted and refuse to acknowledge the idea they can be moved.

People knocked Del Zotto and Girardi all season, as if the Rangers gave up 40 shots a game and Hank stood on his head wire to wire.

The fact is that the Rangers have an excellent defense with very good prospects with or without Staal.

Tied for 10th overall is shots allowed.

Last year the Rangers had an excellent record without Staal in the lineup. He was so bad his first two months back, i thought I was having Larry Melnyk or Jeff Bloemberg flashbacks.

Granted, he was the best out of the bunch in the playoffs. But like some have already said, half a season of Staal is starting to get tiresome.

Mats Sundin and Owen Nolan were back to back 1st overall picks. They were traded within a year of each other.

If I was going to, it wouldn't be during the playoff run.

Knowing our beat writers, they'd probly ask Torts about it after a 3-1 loss.

Last week in Carolina. Staal was discussing having spent the night before the game with his brothers. Ask Marc. Is playing with your brothers something you want to do? We have heard Jordan say he turned down the ten year contract offer in Pittsburgh because he wanted to play with Eric. Basic question. His facial expression and body language will give you the answer.

Maybe people are afraid of the answer?
