Proposal: Marc Staal

If Staal wants to be traded to Carolina to play with his brothers, then the Rangers should do whatevers possible to maximize his value to the franchise via trade. If theres no issue there, then trading him makes little sense.

The notion that this team has enough defensive depth to handle Staal's departure carries an awful lot of assumptions with it.

Assumptions similar to "Chris Kreider will be a top 6 winger for 2012-2013"

I pray Staal has a monster postseason. Such a different player when he's 100 pct. His 2009 and 2012 postseasons were outstanding. Even 2008 as a rookie he was solid.

Im skeptical when it comes to all the injuries, but especially Staal's.

He still has blurry vision. The NHL playoffs probably isn't the best adjustment remedy to that.

That's really the only circumstance that should make trading Staal a legitimate thought for management. If he's content in NY, then you lock him up and hope you can do it cheaply.

However, there's a real chance of getting an impact player in the top-5 of this years draft. If Staal wants to go to Carolina, it's best to bite the bullet now and nab that pick plus some other, NHL ready/proven assets, than wait another year and hope the return will be just as good. You can't look to "replace" Staal with this trade, but you can perhaps soften the blow a bit if you can get some NHL ready talent back with the pick.

Well said.

What has peeved me a bit are insinuations by the fanbase that either:

1. The defense is just as good without him
2. That McIlrath and an emerging John Moore can step in and make Staal's loss that much easier

I think that line of thinking is, in a word, dangerous.

When the defense is healthy, Moore has made Gilroy and Hamrlik expendable. And he moves Eminger to his rightful 7th defenseman spot.

I think that 95% of the board agrees with these posts and it's just a vocal minority on either side that is spouting the extremes of "screw you, you don't know what he wants, we're the NY MFin' Rangers and he will stay with us" or "he's not that big a difference maker, we won't see an appreciable difference if he goes."

Agreed. What people don't realize is that McDonagh, Stepan, Del Zotto, etc, are the exception to the rule when it comes to developing players. How many times did we see "We don't need Nash, we have Kreider" or "Trade Boyle, we have Miller" pop up in threads around here? Until the kid is literally pushing someone else out of the lineup, you can't assume they're going to fill the hole that is created by trading them.

I think McIlrath and Moore could potentially make an excellent pairing for this team in a couple of years, but in no way would I justify a Staal trade because of my projections for them.

A lot of people refuse to admit that NY isn't the preferred destination for every professional athlete.

McDonagh spent 3 years at Wisconsin and then 1/2 a year in the AHL. When the Rangers called him up,there were people here saying he didn't deserve the call up. Opportunity. He excelled when Staal wasn't ready at the start of 11-12. DZ had a chance to get his game back with Staal out. The Rangers have added Moore. Stepan took advantage of his opportunity. Kreider was never given a legit opportunity. The Rangers haven't fallen off the cliff without Staal. They were the top team in East when Staal was out for the first 3 months in 11-12. They haven't played with Staal since March 3. They played more games without Staal than with Staal. If the Rangers had their heads screwed on properly, they should have been the 4th seed but they blew too many points. Somehow with all of the injuries to Staal the Rangers have more than survived.

Last week in Carolina. Staal was discussing having spent the night before the game with his brothers. Ask Marc. Is playing with your brothers something you want to do? We have heard Jordan say he turned down the ten year contract offer in Pittsburgh because he wanted to play with Eric. Basic question. His facial expression and body language will give you the answer.

I'm sure he would realize the weight of that question and give a nothing answer. I doubt he even knows what he wants to do yet. Trading a number one d-man based on his body language in response to a question is no way to go forward. When he decides what he wants to do, I bet he'll talk to the guys upstairs about it, not to the media.

How many games did Girardi, McD and MDZ miss? 5 games combined.

Having those 3 made it possible to survive without Staal. But what if it had been McD that got hit in the eye instead of Staal. We would have done just as well if not better.

Injuries happen. Trade Staal away and we no longer have the depth to "more than survive" an injury to one of them. Maybe Moore can fill that void, but I want to see him prove it first.

The best point being made in this thread is that there's 4 guys who play the left side on defense and really only Girardi and MAYBE McIlrath who can play on the right side in the system. The others are expendable and frankly not very good. I think MDZ is the guy you'd trade for someone to play the right side, Staal is just too damn good.

If Staal wants to go to Carolina. Faulk and Skinner should be coming back. Semin making 7, and M. Staal making 6+, a small market team can't afford to pay Skinner 6M and Faulk his next contract, while having the other Staals make ~15M. Faulk is the player you wan't. And Skinner.

Re-sign Girardi this July. One year before he can be a group III. Re-sign McDonagh to long term deal this summer. He can be a group III in 3 years. Give him a 5-6 year deal. Re-sign DZ next summer. Moore will only get better. McIlrath should be ready at some point next season. Those guys aren't going anywhere. If you have those players plus the assets from a Staal trade,it makes it a better team.

The Rangers have every reason to be concerned about Staal unless Marc has assured them he has zero interest in playing for the Hurricanes. Jordan said he needed to make a decision for himself. He gave Pittsburgh 6 years and he wanted to play with one of his brothers. Pittsburgh offered him $60 million over 10 years. It wasn't about the money. He got the same money in Carolina. The Rangers could potentially offer a ton of money which Carolina could also pay Staal.

Won't happen. Doubt Skinner would be moved at all and if Faulk is coming back, he'd be the biggest part of the trade by far. Think Faulk + low prospect/pick. Doubt they even move him to be honest.

Jeff Skinner is a concussion waiting to happen. That contract in ridiculous. 2nd contract. Sather would never give that type of 2nd contract. He isn't trading for one. Carolina has $43.525M committed to 8 players for 15-16. They have salary coming off the books after 15-16.

There are also serious questions about the team’s management of the salary cap, handing out a significant portion of the team’s self-imposed budget first to Jordan Staal and then to Alexander Semin while failing, for several seasons, to address what may be the worst defense in the NHL.

They have spent heavily to keep some players (Chad LaRose, Joni Pitkanen) while letting others leave over relatively small amounts of money (Cole, Ray Whitney). They have failed to use the leverage given them in the league’s labor agreement, signing Skinner in particular to a contract that helped fuel salary inflation leaguewide.

These aren’t wrong decisions, necessarily – the Hurricanes would argue that the big contract for Skinner reduced the chances he will leave as a free agent down the road – but collectively, they haven’t brought the team success.

Don't forget the 3 year contract to Tomas Kaberle. Pierre Gauthier saved Rutherford's ass on that one.

As I have said, if Staal wants to go to Carolina (and I wouldn't blame him) to play with his brothers, I would move him. The Rangers should maximize the asset and return some value for the player in the same way they did with Gaborik to CLB. For the long-term health of the organization, they can't let very valuable pieces just leave.
