I never said the only way the Rangers can win a championship is with Marc Staal. I said that he's one of the most important pieces of the team, and as such they won't be dealing him for picks and prospects who may or may not ever be as good as him, and certainly won't help us win NOW.

This is really what it comes down to. On HF especially we tend to overrate the impact that prospects, even top picks can have immediately (I am guilty of this as well). Maybe the Rangers could hit a home run with a pick in the 5/6 range. History (especially NYR history) would not support that theory. The Rangers' window is now, and dealing Staal for futures would have a significant impact on that window.

Marc Staal: "Of course I have thought about playing with my brothers but I love it here in NY. I am focused on helping the Rangers win a stanley cup." Happy.

That's fine, but again it's not unreasonable to think he would say the opposite.

Right, we always drool over the prospect (pardon the pun) of having a top 5 pick. But outside of the top two or three selections there are almost always question marks, and these kids are never a sure thing. Let's say the Canes were willing to deal their #5 overall and something else for Staal. Is drafting Barkov, Nuchuskin or Lindholm going to help us in the next two years? Probably not significantly. Now if there were only a year left on Staal's deal, AND the organization was concerned that he was sending mixed messages or even worse, expressed desire to play with his brothers, and the Canes pick was #3...then yeah, I'd be willing to talk moving Staal for Seth Jones. But that's not the case, so it's not going to happen.

You'd never get that deal for Staal with only 1 year left, that's the point

And the Canes don't pick #3 this year and the Rangers aren't going to move Staal with 2 years left on his contract. That's the point.

You wouldn't even get #5 for him

Now you get overpayment
A year later, he isn't extended, you don't get overpayment

add to that, if you look at the teams in the top 5 right now, moving up a 2/3 spots probably wouldn't be as hard.

Having Staal on the team is worth something. It's not a complete loss of value to wait to trade him until it's absolutely necessary (if it ever comes to that). Having him on the team for another year, for a team that is trying to win now, is worth a lot.

I certainly won't deny that.

The people here who scoff at the notion that there is a very good chance Staal leaves for CAR at the end of his contract sound awfully like how NJD fans talked last off season about Parise.

Nothing is certain and we don't know what Marc's intentions are for sure, but you can bet that going to CAR is on the cards in a big way for him.

Rutherford said restructuring the defensive corps will be a priority. The Canes scored 2.65 goals a game this season, 14th in the NHL. But they allowed 3.31 goals, 29th in the league, after the 8-3 beating by the Penguins in the final game Saturday.

“We put some defensemen in roles they couldn’t handle,†Rutherford said.

Rutherford is confident defenseman Joni Pitkanen will be able to return from a broken heel bone. But his spot may not be secure.

The NHL draft lottery will be held Monday in Toronto and all 14 non-playoff teams now have a shot at the No. 1 pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. Carolina, in the fifth spot, has an 8.1-percent chance of winning the first overall pick, but the draft pool is believed to be a deep one this year.

Rutherford believes the Canes’ top pick should be able to play and help the team next season. But uncertainty surrounds the Hurricanes’ offseason.

Sather accompanied the Rangers on the Florida and Carolina road trip. Slats probably ran into Rutherford during the Staal love fest last Thursday.

Would it be smart to trade Staal for a lottery pick in this year's draft? I don't think so. If their offer blows us away, that's another story. Staal should win a cup here with us before he makes up his mind about leaving.

Another year of Staal recovering from an injury. Another year of him getting his game back. Then there's one year left on the contract. Staal missed 3 months in 11-12. He has missed 2 months in 13. How many games has Staal missed the last 2 seasons? How long did it take him to regain his form?

Again, the pro-trade Staal crowd is not suggesting that we expect the return in a deal for Staal to outright replace him. However, given how Sather approached the Gabork situation, I would expect a similar tact with regard to Staal. Sather is likely to gauge Staal's intentions, and if there is any suspicion that a long term deal is not likely, I believe Sather will move him. No, the draft pick we're talking about is not going to provide what a healthy Staal will provide for the remainder of his current contract. But,the point is that you'd be adding a valuable asset in return for Staal.

The pens got 8th overall, Brandon Sutter and Brian Dumoulin for Jordan Staal, who only had 1 year left on his deal. Marc is worth at least as much. Pittsburgh only moved him AFTER he turned down a 10 year deal.

The Rangers are going to try to re-sign Staal. If during negotiations it becomes apparent that he wants to go to carolina, then they can trade him. But not until then.

Lol. You say we don't know his intentions, then say that going to carolina is "in the cards in a big way for him". Contradict yourself much?

I would move Staal only if we have to or if the offer is very fitting for us. Other than that, they would move Del Zotto before moving him.

And? Whats the insinuation here? That hes injury prone and should be traded?

The 2nd injury was just about as freak as you can get.
