there is and never will be a market for marc staal. he has no trade value. never will. hes toast.

anyone acquiring him for anything would be roasted. he is literally the worst defender in the entire league. the other guy near him was just released by the wings.

dave maloney had to choose his words carefully the other day when discussing staal. he said, and i paraphrase here and i will add my interpretation as well, he cant skate, he cant defend, he cant be up ice and he cant get caught in no mans land.

playing trouba skjei and deangelo as your top 3 defenders 5v5 plus one of either hajek or fox has to happen. less mins for staal has to happen.

let 42 play staals pk mins.

start there. reduce the amount of time staal is on the ice and thus reduce the damage done. simple.

I'm always surprised to see this discussion still going. Hasn't everyone resigned themselves to him being here, wearing a letter, and playing 18-20 minutes? I guess not. It's awful and maddening and doesn't make any sense, but it's reality at least through this season.

I feel like there are other things to be pissed about, that may actually improve at some point this year. Staal, you just gotta suck it down and wait for the buyout.

but this is why it happens.

a lot of the other issues with the team are going to take time (depth being the big one.)

With Staal the fix is simple: don’t play him.

What is why it happens? It happens because a fan living in the DC suburbs who hasn't gone to a game for years is resigned to it? Nothing any of us can do can change it. I understand the frustration but I don't understand the point of going on and on about it when we know it won't change.

Whatever, I can put the thread on ignore, I guess.

Yup. Exactly how I feel. I think I've posted about Staal maybe twice in the past four seasons.

I appreciate him for his time and recovering from that brutal eye injury. It's not his fault the team wants to keep tossing him out there for big minutes. That's on the now multiple coaches who have each made the same or similar decisions regarding his playing time.

Wait, wait. He is stupid for walking away from over $9m?

if i was playing like garbage, had injuries, the fans would turn on me and know that I won't live up to the to the contract to be a decent player, yes I would. he has made his money and used to be good. why hurt the team like that, so selfish. Straka had contract term and decided to walk away.

how about fans just boo Staal whenever he is on the ice or have the puck to send a message to Rangers management. just boo Staal if you go to any games. Staal should get the message.

You would walk away from over $9 million dollars? You could be one of the .00000001 percent that would. I would certainly not. I don’t know you at all, but I tend to have a hard time believing that. But ok, you say you would walk away then so be it.

And with that said, sorry but you are in no position to say “he’s made his money so he can walk away. He worked hard for his contract and is entitled to every penny of it no matter what his performance is. Not you,
nor I, nor anyone else is in position to dictate to a player what he should do when it comes to the financial status of him and his family.

Want to boo? That’s the beautiful part about America. Freedom of speech and freedom of expression. You got the right he to bear arms, you got the right to arm bears. Whatever you want.

Feel free to boo to your heart’s content. Some may join you. Most will not. And believing that your booing is going to force the franchise to do anything is fairly idealistic and childish. It would amount to exactly nothing. Fans boo to send a message to the players. Again, that is your right. That said, if you believe that the entire MSG is going to boo Stall, you are very much mistaken. That is being caught up in this boards echo chamber, not at all reflective of
the general mood of most mainstream fans.

if fans know that Marc Staal is not an NHL player anymore, how can management and all of the coaches not notice that he is awful and an AHL player at this point if that. he should be a 7th 8th or even a 9th dman on this team.,

That is not what you said. You said that fans should start booing to send management a message. Now you are conflating booing with what fans know. Those are entirely two different things. You, a denizen of this board is besides himself with the teams performance and Stall’s extremely poor level of play. So you propose to take your feeling and project them onto the entire population of fans so that they may join you in forcing Staal out.

The reality is that once you leave the echo chamber of this board, you would find that most of the fans do not believe that Staal deserves booing. Or so is my belief. I certainly know that I would not boo him. The guy has been a Rangers stalwart. Will play in this franchise his entire career. He does not deserve my booing. Bring back some of the Fat Cats on Ice from the Dark Ages. I will boo them twice over. But a guy that gave his heart, soul and friggin’ eye to this franchise? Never.

Which does not mean that I want him playing. But I have already expressed my view as to why he is.

But again. You are free to boo as you will. I doubt that when attending a game, most of the Garden would join you. Nor do I think management particularly cares about whether or not you are booing. They have a plan and are proceeding accordingly. Opinions of fans is not going to sway them an inch.

If my career earning were 50 million (not counting taxes and living expenses etc. but also not factoring in growth) I would already be retired. Especially if I had concussion issues in the past and was concerned about my health. And I am sure more than .00000001 percent of the population would see it the same way.

But like you said its up to Staal to decide for himself. I wish he would retire but I don't begrudge him for wanting to still play. I'd be content if they just cut his PK TOI a bit.

And it's not like Staal isn't a chill dude from a successful farming family and has 2 other multimillionaire brothers who he could probably call up for some assistance if he need be...

I think he's still playing because he still loooves hockey above anything else. A self-aware person has to know when their skills have drastically declined and to step away.

I understand what you are saying, but earning our own money is a lot different than asking your brothers to help you financially.

Then there are very few self aware professional athletes. In any of the major sports. You always see people playing past their prime and only a tiny few retiring on their own terms with money still left on the table.

I guess that's a personality thing. I don't have siblings, but I'm not too proud that I won't ask others for help if I needed it.

I don't really follow or watch other sports, but sure I guess. The best solution is for Staal to retire or for DQ to cut his ice time by a lot. Then I think majority of us would be satisfied.

That satisfies the masses is probably not the same thing that will satisfy management or the coaching staff.

Brent Seabrook and Bobby Ryan are healthy scratches today yet somehow we can't scratch Marc Staal.
Leadership ugh he must be sleeping with someone in the Sather family. No matter what coach we have wont scratch Staal. It's sickening

Trouba is 1D and we all know that means he can play by himself. Just send out 4 forwards whenever he's out there

Trouba
Skjei - DeAngelo
Hajek - Fox

Solves the problem of Staal playing and not wanting to call up a prospect that isn't ready

To be fair those teams all have better options like Dennis Gilbert, Scott Sabourin, and Tyler Motte. Do the Rangers have anyone on that very high level to play instead of him?
How about a worn out slipper? Costs are second to none and it'll be as mobile as Staal, play the puck as well and be as much of a contributor to a victory as him at this point. Try anyone. Anyone should be able to contribute more. That's my proposition. How about Lindgren?

That would be the craziest Rangers coaching move since Muckler moved Brian Leetch to forward to follow Pavel Bure around the ice.

I like it.
