Staal is a team worst -17.47 relCF%. the next closest is Howden at -8.9%
I am not denying that Staal has been sub par, but trotting out blind stats without any context is sheer folly. Simply throwing out a stat like this involves a particular fan's bias that has a possibility of being formed based on false or faulty assumptions. It does not state who he was on the ice for or where the face off was held. Or who from his team was also on the ice. Factors that when ignored, can sway certain metrics into a false assumption.

He has gotten a ton of ice time with the top line.

I mean, there's just really no defending him at this point. He may be a great person to have in the room, but it's been incredibly tedious to watch him play this season when he's consistently getting beaten to pucks, can't get the puck out of the zone on outlets, and doesn't help sustain any offense when they actually get it into the offensive zone.

Him not playing is what's best for the Rangers at this point, and Gorton and co. need to understand that.

Doesn’t the whole relative part of that statistic compare him against all of his teammates? He’s blowing chunks compared to literally everyone else, but still it’s his teammates fault.

prior to the game even dave maloney had a hard time hiding his on ice play. he was rather blunt in his critique saying in essence hes a liability on the ice in any zone other than the D zone and saying he was basically unable to skate up ice.

and thats the same guy who never comes off the ice, never misses a shift and has never been a healthy scratch.

this guy is a teflon vet who is immune from accountability and what message does that send to other guys who are the target of quinns selective discipline seemingly every game.

this is how coaches get tuned out. this is how coaches lose teams.

He was much worse to watch in person somehow. Watching wide open opponents rip shots and then looking around for Staal all game. Wondering how the f*** he was all the way over there when the play was in front of net.

It's not even that he lost a step and has to play way off guys and take less risks kind of thing now. He's way out of position constantly bc he can't keep up with the play. It's sad.

Yes, but it still does not take into account, who he is on the ice against and if he starts the play in the offensive or defensive zone.

Again, absolutely no denying that he has been poor. I am saying that employing certain metrics as the lone standard can be faulty.

Staal has been very bad. But he is probably not coming out of the line up. I would rather he play half the games, but cannot see Quinn doing it. Though who knows? If Henke can be in a job share, why not Staal?
