You do make a good point with the cap eventually rising higher than it is now.

Anyways, what was your opinion on the Ryan Callahan situation? Should the Rangers have paid him what he wanted?

No. They shouldn't of met Callahan's demands.

You referred to McD in terms of salary for a Norris quality 50-60 point player. You said that you would pay such a player $6 million. I was trying to say that you wouldn't be able to pay a Norris quality 50-60 point defenseman for less than or equal to $6 million when his contract expires. Quite frankly even at this cap, if McD was a free agent this second (let's assume today was free agent day and he was a free agent), I don't think you could get him for $6 million.

The only comparison between Ryan Callahan actually wanting a lot of money and Ryan McDonagh hypothetically asking for a lot of money is that both players have the same first name, Ryan.

agreed staal is our best defenseman right now. mcdonagh is definitely still hurt a little bit, but staal has stepped up and he looks the best he ever has. he's playing physical, he's got grit, and he's doing everything that he needs to do on top of the stick work that he normally has... going to be a sad day if he ends up signing in carolina after his contract, but the guy always gives us 100 percent when he's healthy.

Staal is a #1 defenseman on about 25 other teams in the NHL. #1 defenseman dont have to put up points.

You can match him up against any player and he's going to win most of those battles. Hes an elite defender. hes totally worth 6x6. and throw in the captaincy while youre at it.

I'd say 15-ish, probably a couple less.

Still a great player.

This team is amazing in very subtle ways. Marc was playing very unlike a healthy Marc towards the end of the season prior to McD getting injured (he was a minus more games than not) but let's share the blame as Strahlsy was just as much to blame for that. Point is, when McD got hurt, that's when it seemed that Marc AND Strahlsy really have picked it up and one could say they've played better than McD/Dan pairing.

That's what a quality team does when needed. E.G. Grossman out, replaced by Gill and what defenseman really picked up for his physical play? Timonen played well.....but he was missed and Grossman isn't even close to McD in every important comparison.

There is a world of difference between paying Callahan and paying Staal.

And since when was the worth of a defenseman tied solely into his offensive prowers?

Still a great player.
I cannot see how one can even begin to argue this. If he was ever to develop more of a mean streak, I would compare him to a young Pronger.

Pay Staal the money that a #1 and a captain is worth.

I remember Staal used to be pretty nasty his first few years here. Wonder what happened to that.

His sheer dominance in the defensive zone was starting to resemble Pronger before he suffered his first concussion. I was commenting on that a few years ago. Great combination of reach, smarts and agility.

The problem is that Staal has suffered from two injuries that have essentially reset a lot of his progress. Especially with the eye-injury, he really had to go back to the basics.

In regards to his physicality, I think that has a lot to do with him still getting acclimated to his injuries. He's still not fully comfortable out there, even though he's playing great hockey right now. He used to be a monster with open ice hits; it's not a necessity, but I hope he can re-implement it at some point.

Before his concussion we were looking at a 40 point defenseman that was the best defensive defenseman in the NHL. If that can get Chara a norris finalist appearance, it certainly would have gotten Staal some consideration.

I'd call Staal a sheriff's deputy on the 1st pairing for a lot of teams, paired with a more mobile offensive option.

The core of the defense in Girardi, McDonagh, Staal is very strong. Girardi isn't getting any younger but certainly is at least a few years away from having real age set in.

Those guys can play so many minutes that they could carry a bottom pairing of Gilroy-Bickel if they needed to.

Kind of a controversial opinion, but I think the rangers should trade Staal for Pavelski to help absorb the loss of Richards.

Granted if they can find a suitable top four LHD....

I would never trade a #1 type of defenseman for a top line forward. The former are much harder to come by.

Chelios was traded for Savard.

As good as Marc is, trading Staal for Pavelski would be a good trade for the Rangers offensive woes, but the Shark's executive vice president and general manager Doug Wilson is already on the hot seat after this year's play off exit, so there will only one way to get that trade done.

In addition to the Staal/Pavelski swap, Dolan would need to offer a safe house and Mayor de Blasio would need to offer diplomatic immunity to Doug Wilson until the death threats subside.

While Wilson is in our safe zone he could help us ascertain a cheap and easy to find alternative LHD who will shut down Crosby, Ovechkin, etc. come play off time.

Get 'er done slats!

Honestly, probably

Probably won't cut the mustard with me.

If this guy wants my or any fans approval. He needs to do more! This team needs goals!

What has Marc Staal done?

Has he minimized the otter teams main threat to that of a mere mortal?

Has he logged an unconscionable number of minutes while being effective throughout that time?

Has he shown that after head and ocular injuries he not only returned to a great form, but he also may be a candidate for this team's captaincy?

Maybe...

It's not the playoffs until Staal takes back the best defenseman on the Rangers title.
