Marc has been his usual self. When he is on he is a top 5-10 pure defensive dman in the league. A treat to watch.
He is just now getting back to pre injury status and showing why he is a true top pairing defenseman in the league He needs to be locked up long term as quickly as possible and not have negotiations drag out.

I dont think he's back to where he was before his injury troubles but it's hard to ask for a better defensive guy on your second pairing.

I don't think McDonagh is playing bad overall, just not up to his usual standard, so it's nice to have consistency out there when the first pairing isn't on the ice

Yeah I wonder if it was any other defenseman if we'd think he's sucked. Just not his standard. We gave up the 2nd fewest goals in the playoffs and 1 in 2 out of 3 games without Lundqvist having to be a God.

He's always been underrated IMO.

No doubt. He has been one of the most important pieces in the eyes of the organization and if he wants to stay he'll be a Ranger for life. I'm fine giving him the Cally deal (6x6).

He has always been this great, but the rise of McD took away a lot of attention. I hope Staal can continue to play this way and continues to improve on his offensive side again like pre-injury. Staal or McD have to have the C on this team

He is one of the good guys so I like to see him play so well. The injuries really set him back. He deserves this success.

Staal is a monster, and having him, G and McD is an absolute blessing for any team in the league. The Rangers would be insane not to ride that out as long as possible. I'd have no qualms whatsoever with having all 3 of them for the rest of their careers, so long as they don't demand to be hideously overpaid.

3 big cap hits on D is a strategy of debatable quality. Personally, I like it, especially with Hank in goal going forward. IMO, the playoffs in particular are when defensive d-men and goalies can shine, and having 3 responsible d-men, and one in McD who has a good deal of offense, is an incredible asset. It does eat into the capspace for forwards, but this team has quite a few big ticket, high-priced forwards as it is. I can't imagine / hope to god that they wouldn't be looking to add another without losing one in exchange. Good forwards are needed, but not necessarily high-paid ones. These days, it's all about having forwards who can outproduce their contracts.

So much for Staal reuniting with his brothers down in Carolina...

Staal has been great. I think he gets overlooked sometimes due to the emergence of McDonagh, but Staal is very important to this team.

That quote is awesome. Speaks volumes about what kind of guy Marc is.

Good, [some] 'Canes fans were really adamant about him bailing on us to complete the Staal-Megazord or whatever they're trying to do down there.

Well done.

Notably absent in praise is the fantastic play of Stralman. He's unspectacularly quiet and efficient in his game, and some other team will/should offer him a substantial raise this off-season.

If his name were Alex Steel and not Anton Stralman he would get a lot more praise, see Kevin Klein.

I trust Rangerboy in terms of cap news and he posted something that the cap would be around 70 million

Last I read it was estimated to be somewhere between 69 and 70...and that the weakening of the Canadian dollar was pushing the number down.

I could have sworn his last post was right around 69, I could be wrong. Sorry, not trying to put out bad information.

Exactly this, so still less than 7M increase

QFT.

Likewise with Staal. If his name was Nicklas Larsson there would be many posts suggesting he's too soft, doesn't check, too Swedish.

He's alright, nowhere near top ten defensively. Especially away from Stralman.

Stralman is good, but come on, Staal does not depend on Stralman for success. You are way too biased in favour of Stralman. Give it a rest. Nobody is attacking Stralman. I hope he is signed again.

Yeah, Mint is the other side of the people that say that Stralman is worse than Klein. Somehow the guy that was one of the best defensive defensemen in the league long before Stralman came in and still plays like that when he's on (he has been more off than previous years) is a product of Stralman. That's ridiculous too.

Your victim complex is equal parts hilarious and disturbing.

So Marc Staal's entire career before 2011 is explained by?

Just look at Staal's splits away from Stralman and with him. It's staggering how much he better he performed this year with him.

This pairing shouldn't be broken up for the foreseeable future.

He's barely played away from Stralman all year. Like 90% of the season he's played with Stralman. He played with Stralman even when McDonagh got injured. Are you by any chance looking at his play early in the season. Staal sucked for a while this season until the Chicago game, I don't think people that say he's top 10 defensively mean when he's playing like ****, but rather when he's playing well. I can't think of a game he played without Stralman since then. Both have been healthy and playing together save a few shifts. So either you're looking at games where everyone would admit he sucked because he was coming off an almost career ending injury (on top of other injuries). Or you're looking at a very small sample size of a shift here and there because I don't think he's played away from Staal since he's gotten his game back. Sometimes there's more context than your advanced stats and you fail to look at all of the factors.
