He also has a 12% BB rate and a 22% K rate now.

He ended April at .089/.159.250

He posted .236/.358/.652 in May.

Imagine if he had a stretch where he got hot and/or lucky
It's still only two months, so we'll see how the rest of the year goes, but I think his season has been super impressive so far, and probably enough to get him back onto the prospect radar.

He already had crazy power, but now he's showing way more power than he ever has while also significantly improving his BB and K rates back to really solid levels.

He's now up to a 102 wRC+ with a .126 BABIP! There's only one other qualified minor leaguer under .170, and that guy has a 38 wRC+. Other than Orelvis, the lowest BABIP for a player with better than a 100 wRC+ is .214.

And here I wanted the Jays to DFA him.

The thing about Richards is that if ever there were a reliever that would be worth the gamble based on peripherals, it is him. His 13.88K/9 is very hard to ignore, especially since it is not based on fastball velocity. Even when he was struggling, it was a combo of getting BABIPed and giving up slightly more homers.

They honestly might have to send him down now. At least as he got shelled he remained confident. Now he's down on himself and confidence is something that shouldn't be screwed with.

At this point it doesn't really matter who the option is to replace him in the rotation. He looked rough on the mound physically yesterday too..like gasping for air rough.

Give him whatever time he needs to get in shape, figure stuff out, whatever he needs to get back to a functional level.

Does anyone have clarity on what I just witnessed. Verdugo swung and his bat went into the crowd. The fan didn’t want to give it back. The security seemed to eventually leave. It looks like the fan kept the bat.

Is there a rule on this? I think I have seen many fans keeping the bat but then others like this wanted the bat back.
Thanks

The farm hasn't been great this year but there are a few bright spots.

Kasevich hitting an empty .306/.386/.717 at High-A as a 22-year-old, while playing ok defense. He's either going to have to steal more bases or hit for more impact though, otherwise his upside at most is David Eckstein.

Garrett Spain hitting .300/.351/.557 as a 22-year-old former 15th round pick at High-A. He's a bit of a tweener, not walking a lot, and not hitting for a lot of power as a right fielder, so the profile isn't great.

Roden is a year older and a former 3rd rounder at High-A. He's a left-fielder only but he's a double's machine hitting for more impact than the other two .300/.424/.874 with more wallks than strikeouts.

Nunez is also 22 and hit his way up to AA. He lowered his strikeouts and increased his walks, but his power numbers are lower than in the past (which is ok cause the exit velos are still good). Hitting .311/.387/.459 overall.

There's nothing that says that the fan has to. That's why it is common to see a player offer an autographed fresh bat for a game bat.

Orelvis with another homer. Also had a single and a walk.
Added a double in the 9th, too. Now a 113 wRC+ with a .143 BABIP. What a season he's having.

Last 20 games: .435/.829/1.264, 16.5 BB%, 18.8 K%, 11 HR, .514 ISO, .256 BABIP, 221 wRC+... you don't really get hotter than that.

I'm ok with them taking their time with him since he's still only 21 and struggled so much last year, but I find his season so far to be way more impressive than anything he did to get himself on Top 100 lists earlier in his career.

I think you could make the argument that Orelvis has the most absurd ceiling/floor of any prospect in baseball right now.

At the bottom of his floor you have a complete bust out or Yankees' version of Joey Gallo and the very tippy top of his ceiling is baseball's next 60 HR hitter. Maybe that's a bit bold but I'm tall enough for this ride so I'mma stay on it if that's alright with you.

That's about as hot of a streak as I have ever seen. Wow.

I never wrote him off - too much to work with, and he was very young. With his ridiculous bat speed, he simply needed to learn he could wait out breaking pitches while knowing he could still get to the fastball.

Hitting .435 with a .256 BABIP for a 20-game stretch might be one of the most insane stats I've ever seen.

I don't disagree. I wouldn't say it's likely, but his power relative to his age is unreal and you can certainly envision a scenario where he turns into Giancarlo Stanton. Or he might plateau as a AAA player who launches 40 HR at that level but can't make enough contact to stick in MLB. Or maybe he middles out as Khris Davis or something.

Exciting, strange, boom/bust prospect.

Cleveland trying to cut bait before everyone figures out he's damaged goods.

His surface level stats look fine but then you look at the analytics. Major decline in the past 2 seasons. Velocity down, K% down alarmingly from 65th percentile in 2022 to 15th now. Pretty much every metric says this dude should be getting, or will get smacked.

Fastball has lost 2 mph of velo between 2021 and now. Not ideal for a guy that they likely will want an ace level package for.

It's almost impossible to wrap one's head around it. For most practical purposes, the difference between the two numbers is literally the HR's he's hit over that stretch.

Except that he can play SS defensively. He's more athletic than any of the players mentioned.

That stat hurts my head. He's mashing without getting lucky. If he were to get lucky, he would essentially be a demigod.

This sport is whack sometimes.

I was talking more just the bat.

That said, he's making a ton of errors in the field and I was sort of under the assumption he'd eventually be moving to the OF, although I'm not going to claim to be anything resembling an expert on his defense.
