Even if this team went on a magical run and made the playoffs, the team is way to soft to compete in the playoffs anyways, and like always have to rely on Demko to try and steal them games.

Uhhh circumstances changed and they change course. It’s not that hard to understand.
Uhh it's the fact they still saw potential in him. But yeah keep believing everything they sell you.

Well, all these moves are lower level, which the team will push to them to the edge (of the wildcard)

Miller trade was to speed the rebuild. Here's the quote;

"If we don't make the playoffs next year we are protected, we have lottery protection, and if we do make the playoffs it just speeds up the process of where we are at in our rebuild and pushes it a little bit further ahead for us."

Mind you, there was never a rebuild at all.

OEL was aquired because Benning always sold "one player away".

My definition of contender is a team that's finished among the top, constantly making the playoffs.

Allvin/Aqua's definition of contender is squeaking in the playoffs and see what happens.

Like I said, different meanings to different people.

But where has Allvin actually said/shown this? It was a dumb statement from Benning from I believe one of his sad sack end of season pressers after failing again when the guy couldn't even build a team that could make the playoffs in the first place. Then with Allvin in place as the new GM and he didn't start rebuilding, fans like yourself plucked that old Benning quote and started applying it to new management as if saying something clever. Or even a lot of it was just thrown out there in pointless fan bickering between rebuild vs retool till it stuck to the point that it may as well been a real quote from Allvin.

It shouldn't be hard to understand. You don't typically make the playoffs for the first time after however many years and are immediately in contention to win the Cup. Regardless of what the Canucks are doing, for any rebuilding team unless you're really lucky there is a 'make the playoffs consistantly' step between the 'rebuild' and 'contend/win' step.

That’s fine, the goal is not to be a contender right f***ing now.

Well yeah they believed in him, I have no doubts about that. They just changed course because we don’t want and don’t have the cap space to lock 2.2-2.5M on a guy that most likely be rehabbing this year. It’s not that hard to understand.

Absolutely - it’s too soon to criticize. Let’s see what the roster looks like come training camp.

I don’t think that’s good enough. They basically gave themselves a four year window and have already wasted one year. If they don’t have a plan to take advantage of this year they’ve badly mismanaged their situation.

I'm sure they have a roadmap of how they'd like to arrive as a legitimate threat this year, but you can't really just make that happen unilaterally. I'd imagine that their baseline goal for the season is to clean up some holdover messes and field an improved team that can hopefully take a step forward.

So Canuck fans don't want to win the Cup?
You can’t go from shit -> cup winning team in 2 years. You build a playoff team and then you start to do those 1st + prospect for star players deal for like 2-3 years to get to contender level.

Not be a contender... Then what the hell was the point of last year? Lol okay.

So let's clear up this timeline here.

Benning fired in 2021.
Team is shit in 2021-2022.
Team is shit in 2022-2023.
Playoff team in 2023-2024 (in your scenario)
Playoff team in 2024-2025
playoff team in 2025-2026.
Playoff team in 2026-2027.
Contender in 2027-2028.

Hughes will be in 28, Petey 30, and Demko 32.

I'd love for them to win the cup, but I understand that this isn't going to be the perpetual sole motivator for a billion dollar or whatever it is company.

Almost all of the cap relief for the OEL buyout is for the up coming season.
Trading 1st + 2nd for Hronek who is cost controlled for next season only.
Miller extension that you should (or at least I would) be expect to not be a great to have on the books in 3 maybe 4 years.

They've got a ton of chips in.
It’s called running a team and trying to untangle the mess from the previous administration. Sigh……

There are not a “ton of chips in”

So you would have qualified Bear? Interesting but I certainly don’t agree
Where did I ever say that? I wouldn't of wasted 2 months to aquire him in the first place, he was never that good. If I went out of my way to aquire a player I really liked and thought he was a solid piece going forward injury or not I would qualify that player, because he will make an impact. The fact is this management was sold that Bear was that piece in their eyes and even made that clear at the end of the year, and now with an injury he's just not worth it for LTIR, so how do you trust what their evaluating?

Wait are you doing calendar year and not nhl season years? Who the f*** does that?

Yes for the following season we should be a playoff team.
23-24 aka this coming season
- get rid of Pearson, Beau, Myers at TDL and use asset to add a good piece that we extend
24-25
- hopefully get rid of Garland+Boeser for actual assets and use to add one more piece
25-26
hopefully Willander/Lekkerimaki comes in and you start to trade 1st rounder for another piece

Also Demko will probably not finish his contract with us. Don’t think he’s the same core as Hughes and Petey.

So you'd just leave the spot open until he comes back, and assume he'd be unaffected by a major shoulder injury? But also you want to simultaneously be a contender?

Would you have still traded for this hypothetical player you like if he'd suffered a major shoulder injury right before you signed off on the deal?

I didn't think anyone would disagree with that notion.

What would it look like to be "ton of chips in" for next year...?

Leave him be!

Keep believing everything they say then, some fans still don't learn year after year of the same crap, good luck with that lol.
I’d prefer if they lie. I don’t want a management group that telegraphs everyone of their moves. They liked Bear. He got injured so they moved on. I have no idea what your issue is. You think Bear sucks and it was a pro scouting fail?

Hmm how did this team do that with Hronek, I guess the spot was just open with him injured how did they even manage....

If he was that good, I wouldn't let him walk.

When your strategy backs you into a corner in this way though, beggars can’t be choosers. MS’s comment about not feeling the need to win every trade are spot on in this context. Wins today are worth so much more than wins a a few years out.

We know what Provorov went for. We know what the best offer for Sanheim was. We have seen what the cost to dump salary is. We know what the top UFAs cost. A few more quality defenders will probably move this offseason. There’s already been plenty of opportunity to materially improve the team further than they have and if they don’t by training camp then it will be even more clear by then.

They had the perfect opportunity to tank last year, but instead they wanted to compete, but people believe they're not contending lol okay.

Hronek was added in the midst of a hopeless season - there was nothing to be lost in the downgrade. They weren't going into the season knowing he'd be out until likely at least January, and then getting back up to speed for however long after that.
