It was clear that several teams you expected to be better simply didn’t perform. Some players didn’t really want to participate so there were definitely players and teams going through the motions. Even if you don’t want to buy that I think most would accept that the tournament of that nature was unusual.

And in the end the Canucks run was still on the back of goaltending (mostly fantastic for the Canucks and mostly really bad for opposition).

No matter what you want to say the reason is Alvin is completely correct in dismissing the bubble year “achievement”. The hundreds of games surrounding that month on both sides says as much.

And it should be mentioned, fairly good luck in terms of injuries.

but I don't understand what Allvin is saying here. Why didn't good teams want to play? And why did they win if they didn't want to play?

the pens (where allvin obviously was at the time) lost to the 12th seed habs in 4 games in the qualifying. guessing that's some insight on how that group felt - can absolutely see how crosby/malkin and the gang, only two years removed from back to back cups, had no interest being isolated in a toronto hotel away from their families while the world was operating under massive uncertainty. guessing they were probably relieved to be knocked out early, and it wasn't really a secret to allvin and co.

You just need to get in and then anything can happen. Even better teams than you not wanting to be there.
Outside of the 2019 Blues, every team that’s won recently was considered a contending team heading into the playoffs.

If the end goal is to bring the cup home then just striving to be the Calgary Flames of the past 10 years is not going to get it done.

Who said anything about winning the Cup?

FWIW, before both of their seasons began I had both the Blues and Kings (2012) in my 1st tier of teams competing for the Cup. And I'm really not that smart.

I don't think the team really did much in the bubble year apart from finally play with some urgency, but I don't understand what Allvin is saying here. Why didn't good teams want to play? And why did they win if they didn't want to play?

He should have just said the year was disjointed, Covid was messing with bodies and minds, and teams were not playing at their proper level.

Apparently you are.

That feels like bad reasoning for the correct Answer. Doubt teams werent trying. It sure as shit didnt feel like vegas or stl werent trying with how thoroughly they dominated us. Maybe some teams didnt want to play, but i doubt every good player/ team there didnt want to play. I doubt any large contingent of them felt like that.

2020 was a fluke because were way over the cap for a "regular season series", most likely wouldnt have made it if the year finished out normally, and were still missing all the players we had injured pre shut down.

If the teams were not trying- then they were not good teams.

Washington stood out that year as recent champions who put in zero effort and were immediately out. It was actually comical how bad they were relative to normal playoff intensity.

I’m guessing Allvin also feels similarly about his Pittsburgh team.

All of the teams who had won a cup in the recent past really did not care about winning one with an asterix and no crowds.

I don’t even know what you are trying to say. The team owner down want to win a cup… we can debate if any of them are good at it.
I am saying they are not seriously trying. They can want whatever they want as much as they want it. Under the vision and guidance of the owner acting as president of hockey ops they are not a franchise actually serious about winning the Stanley Cup.

aquilini would rather be in control than hand over the reigns to someone else who can do what he can't

You are both getting incompetence mixed up with trying… which again was the original point.
