Massive indictment against this management with the guys decided to go with in Myers and desharnais
Not really.
The easy season just qualifies the team for the real season. Half the league gets that chance.
Last year the real season exposed the difference quite a bit.
The two hot Canuck dmen were exposed to players playing at 110% and they failed, you could say miserably. Combined Hronek and Hughes, the two highest paid dmen got 12 pts, they were also the smallest dmen. Myers and Zadorov got 9 pts but more importantly they out hit QH & FH 85 to 29, blocked almost twice as many shots. Defence.
This wasn't lost on most hockey people. In fact the two smallest dmen were behind in most defensive stats in the real season. The rest of the D, Juulsen - in two games just about out hit either, Cole did out hit and out block them, Soucy was similar. The defensive metrics both Hughes and Hronek were DFL in the real season.
Just about every team in the league learned how to neutralize Hughes, who won the Norris trophy.
Even Deharnais in Edmonton was well ahead in hits (40) and blocked shots (41) in his limited ice time.
Last year's team IMO was so close to taking THE STEP, but for whatever reasons players were jettisoned at cost, let go and skill levels reduced to forecheckers. Maybe it did have something to do with the OEL buyout and the cost over the next 6 years and especially the next 2 years, maybe it was just the coach's preference to "type" or inside information they possess.
This year's system might be nothing but Tocchet trying to teach the team a playoff style or low event hockey. But it might not suit all the team for an extended period of time because of the pressure it puts on a few players to be brilliant in a dumbed down game.
They beat the SJ Sharks, they should have, it should never have been as close a game. SJ played the night before, traveled and played. It could be that if they had not lost the coaches challenge the outcome could have been different, the shots in the third period kind of show how close the two teams were and that with one of them being tired and the other still learning to win coming through a rebuild.
At any rate large humans on defence in the real season make a real difference. Can the Canucks find another Zadorov, Soucy or Myers? Because it is pretty clear they don't want to spend 5 mil on a top 4 dman, so who is out there for under 4 mil that can play in a top two role?
Hronek's hurt, whatever his injury really is and out. What if Hughes gets sick, hurt or needs personal leave? What doe the top pairing look like then? Hell what does the entire D corps look like?
Myers - Soucy
Deharnais - Forbort
Juulsen - Brannstrom
For 10 games?
If they did get a top line D where will he fit once the team is healthy? Second fiddle to Hughes all the time? Paid well over 5 mil?
