Losing any of your 2-3 most important players for long periods of time is going to cause major issues and in a salary cap world it's almost impossible to overcome perfectly.
Sure but you don’t want the replacement to look this bad, in any position. Need a better backup, somehow- next year. Teams confidence gets shattered by these kinds of goalies.

For sure it's gone badly, he's been awful. I think most were comfortable with a Demko/Martin tandem coming in, though.
My bet is we will see Demko very soon after the all star break. They have to set this coach up for success. Also wouldn’t be surprised to see the Horvat trade feature a roster player or two to help Tocchet float a bit in the turbulent waters.

Yeah, I think successful teams find ways to rally when they have a significant loss. Our defense is so bad that it was our goalies that were doing the rallying...so when the goalies started crapping the bed the defense had nothing more to offer and the team suffered.

Successful teams build through the draft.

Their plan for NHL ready players I have a feeling is going to fail miserably.

Of course it’s going to fail. It’s about the lowest probability route they could take to try to be competitive. They have basically no chance of pulling it off.

They’ll flail around for 3-4 years and then end up rebuilding anyway after accomplishing nothing except pissing everyone off.

It will be incredible to me that these guys came in and decided to double down on the group that the last guy was fired for assembling. I've never seen anything like it.
Ya. Usually new management will opt for long term options since they have, presumably, the confidence and patience of management for at least a few years. It’s understandable while so many management teams resist rebuilding when they’ve been on the clock for 3-5 years. But this is truly bizarre.

With that said, ownership may not have the autonomy to rebuild, and also, we will have a better read after this summer. While I hate the Miller contract if they decide to “rebuild” then that will go a far way for me as I think the best GMs are ones that are able to make appropriate adjustments, major or minor, when needed.

LOL

Lebrun was saying there is going to be a huge premium in free agency to come to this trash organization.

I can’t wait to see their signings this offseason

It will be as embarrassing as when we got into a bidding war for Jay Beagle
Or when we offered Poolman $10 mill when nobody was offering over $3

People have short memories, we heard this before when Edler, Markstrom and Tanev were let go. Vancouver will always attract some players because they have their offseason home here, grew up here etc. I’m not a fan of this management groups work so far or how Bruce was treated but this is just the media being the media. The media blew up a lot of this coaching change, but management should know better than to give the media a juicy story because they’ll run with it and won’t put it away until something happens.

One thing I haven’t seen discussed much is how nobody in the media seems to be doing any digging into explaining *why* this is happening. It’s so inexplicably baffling. There has to be some explanation.

This is one thing I have been saying the last little bit with how incompetent the media is. We could know so much more with a simple follow up question on some of these details.

For instance Hughes comments on Pearson, why didn't anyone ask him follow ups in the moment? Then we would know where the issue and what the players problems were vs now we have all this speculation.

Or did management talk to bruce about what was going on before his firing? It now appears they didn't, but again a simple follow up.

Its been like this far too long. Get a good quoted and no follow ups.

Criticizing them for the goaltending is a "hindsight is 20/20" and completely off base IMO...Demko is their clear #1, Spencer Martin had a good enough year as a backup that it was worth it to bring him back at minimum wage...wasting cap space on a 1B is just another dumb move that eats cap space that they don't have.

The buck stops with management when it comes to players hired. The fact is that the best goalie in the organisation this year is Delia and that is solely on management.

I would say so. People were definitely happy the Canucks didn't go out and spend a few million on a backup. Unfortunately it didn't work out.

Wait the media already confirmed Vancouver already overpayed Mikheyev from what anybody else was offering

Guess it isn’t a conspiracy.

There are plenty of reasons to be dissatisfied with management, this one doesn't really register for me.

My dark theory is we heard so many of these leaks because management wanted to fire Bruce. They didn't want to have him here from the get go and FAQ made them keep him. So they made it as untenable as possible until it had to be done.

Not a good look for anyone except Bruce, and probably show mostly how bad ownership is, but I still don't like from a management perspective. Wonder if they talked to Bruce at all durring this. Sure would have been nice for our media to ask.

extreme conspiracy theory here.

Or flail around for 3-4 years, then convince themselves that now they have enough good pieces for a retool, and then flail around for another 3-4 years.

Blame the coach
Ultimately, fairly or not, the coach is the one who takes the most blame for a team's performance...I don't think the goaltending's poor performance can be attributed to any single thing...I'd say it was a multitude of problems...

-Demko having surgery in the off season contributing to his poor start and eventual injury.
-Management not doing anything of note to improve the defence or penalty killing.
-Spencer Martin despite his good play last season was not ready for the work load and responsibility of a #1 role.
-Coaches don't adjust to play stronger defense to protect their vulnerable goalies.
-Players don't do enough to protect their goalies.
-Delia's playing time limited due to emergency call up.

The only way to fix this team is to fire JT Miller into the sun. His angry reaction on the bench when that goal where Martin was interfered would be fine is his own performance was up to snuff but this is a guy who clearly blames his teammates for everything when it goes wrong but doesn't own up when he's the problem like in the dying seconds when he makes zero effort on the empty net goal. Just his body language shows he's the cancer in the room. Get this guy out of here even if you need to take back a bad contract and trade Horvat for a haul. Buy out OEL in the summer and trade Myers with 50% retained. Need to build around Pettersson and Hughes.
