Even if he greatly benefitted from MacKinnon and Makar setting him up, you don't put up those numbers without being awesome. I'd be all over adding him as a rental. I don't even care about getting him extended.

He is a Finn, so there's that, but the potential cost concerns me.

It would cost Bourque/Stankoven and a 1st, I'd surmise. Is it possible that they would attempt to sign Rantanen and ship Robertson off in the offseason in order to create the cap space given Robertson's difficult contract demands? That might be a way to bring in a cheap, young RHD to solidify our d-core as well.

I mean rantanen would be a great get, the cost is the concern especially for a rental. As there's no way to fit his salary demand long term

I don't know if I'd want to do that trade. Rantanen is the better player, but how much better and is it worth 2+m more per year, especially since we don't have anyone close to Mackinnon's level to pair him with

Agreed- not sure what kind of package the Stars give up to a team that just moved Necas for Rantanen. I feel like the value is similar in JRob than anything else the Hurricanes would want

Especially since I think Dallas will play Colorado in the first round. The pure joy we would all have to watch Rantanen score the series winning goal against them…along with a bunch of other goals he scores on them.

The difference is, I don't see Rantanen for JRob as an "all in". It's shuffling Deck chairs. it's minor improvement, in a position that doesn't need it the most. The blue line is the problem.
Rantanen for something around Marchment+++. Sign me up.
JRob going out, doesn't drastically improve the team in such a trade.
IMO Robo, Johnston, Harley, and Heiskanen are the only players that should be pretty much "untouchable"
