A lot of revision here. Fedorov did play defence for Detroit sometimes, but Bowman put him there as essentially a punishment when he felt that Fedorov wasn't engaging offensively. Fedorov was also not always the number one centre on Detroit, and in fact that role was shared with Yzerman in almost the exact same way as Malkin shares his with Crosby.
Fedorov is my second favourite player ever, but Malkin is going to comfortably pass him. Fedorov didn't play at his best consistently enough to keep ahead of Malkin. Fedorov always brought it in the playoffs, but Malkin is a tremendous playoff performer as well. Also, I am amazed at how frequently posters spell his name wrong, even when trying to lecture on his role.
All of this. Fedorov is overrated by many, even if he was a top 1-3 player for 2.5 regular seasons and several playoff runs. His overall career and sustained level of elite is probably a step blow Malkin's by now, and certainly by the time Malkin's career is over as he clearly has atleast 3-5 seasons of dominant play left.
