Malkin is the best Russian player ever

A lot of revision here. Fedorov did play defence for Detroit sometimes, but Bowman put him there as essentially a punishment when he felt that Fedorov wasn't engaging offensively. Fedorov was also not always the number one centre on Detroit, and in fact that role was shared with Yzerman in almost the exact same way as Malkin shares his with Crosby.

Fedorov is my second favourite player ever, but Malkin is going to comfortably pass him. Fedorov didn't play at his best consistently enough to keep ahead of Malkin. Fedorov always brought it in the playoffs, but Malkin is a tremendous playoff performer as well. Also, I am amazed at how frequently posters spell his name wrong, even when trying to lecture on his role.

All of this. Fedorov is overrated by many, even if he was a top 1-3 player for 2.5 regular seasons and several playoff runs. His overall career and sustained level of elite is probably a step blow Malkin's by now, and certainly by the time Malkin's career is over as he clearly has atleast 3-5 seasons of dominant play left.

Bufflen and Burns > Malkin

:sarcasm:

Fedorov is one of those players who gets overrated on Hockey'sFuture with the nostalgia and the defensive reputation. Malkin is a better player.

Malkin > Ovechkin as well

What do you mean Fedorov is overrated?
Have you seen his skating technique? He would skate circles around both Crosby and Malkin if he would be of the similar age. And he was fast, and skilled with cannon of a shot.
People who haven't watched the hockey of the 90's are still passing judgement. Ridiculous.
And when Malkin wins a Hart and Selke in the same year, we would have a discussion that he is better than Fedorov, but Malkin is not good enough defensively.

Byfuglien can't even play defense now and hes a defenseman.

Crosby's name shouldn't even be mentioned in this thread.

I can see an argument for malkin over Ovechkin, Fedorov, Bure, and Kovalev as best Russian NHLer ever.

Impossible to compare him the the pre 85 Russians.

I think you can compare him to guys like Fetisov and Tretiak, assuming you don't consider them post-85. Fetisov was on a Bourque-like level as maybe the best defenseman of the 80s, but fell off hard at 30. Tretiak was maybe the best goalie in the world in the early 80s, and certainly in the top tier of goalies.

You can't make a direct NHL-to-NHL comparison, but it's not much of a stretch to think of how those guys compare in the grand scheme of things.

So Fedorov has one monster year and that overrides Malkin forever?

Where is Fedorov's Art Ross? (2 for Malkin)
Where is Fedorov's Conn Smythe? (1 for Malkin - could have 2 without argument)

Heck, Malkin has 2 runner up finishes for the Hart.

So where, exactly, is Fedorov better? Because he was recognized as a better defensive player? Is that it?

That so outrageously overstates Fedorov's legacy I'm not even sure where to start.

Can Geno play D? And no I don't mean just come back and cover, I mean play D! Fedorov did at the NHL level and was good at it. Had speed Geno could only dream of having, Could take over a game all on his own done it many times. Could out stick handle him, and could out shoot him. And I really like Geno a lot. But they are 2 vastly different players.

Lidström can't play forward so Byfuglien is better.

Because Fedorov played for an Orig 6 team, which we all know settles any argument on HF Boards....;)

Here's the truth, Fedorov is a Hall of Famer no doubt, but Malkin is the better player....

Fedorov should have won the Conn Smythe bsck in 97. The biased NA Press gave to Vernon, who had no business in winning it.

Fedorov was also a massive distraction off the ice with multiple contract holdouts, a bunch of personal drama, and a reputation for being uninterested for large chunks of his career.

Malkin's a bit inconsistent, but his negatives are considerably smaller than Fedorov's. I like Feds, but let's be real here.

Why did the biased NA press give him an MVP award while Gretzky out scored him? They'd have easy justification to not have him win the Hart and yet that happened. Did they become more biased between 94 and 97?

Geno's prime and Geno's career accomplishments surpass that of Fedorov

As a pens fan I can admit that OVs body of work is better than malkins. But you have to take team success into account also.

Malkin's great but Ovechkin is the man. I won't include Makarov or those before him... impossible to say.

And Malkin can't/hasn't?
