Malkin is the best Russian player ever

He's absolutely not the best russian player ever, BUT has a very solid case as the best Russian NHL'er.

Who was? Makarov? Fetisov? Kharlamov? And are you absolutel positive one of those 3 were better than Malkin?

I would say he has passed Mogilny and maybe even Datsyuk, but it may be too early to put him ahead of Bure and Fedorov IMO
The only case for Fedorov is his insane 93-94 season. Malkin has had the better career and prime though. Bure...im struggling to think of any case Bure would have over Malkin. Malkin is better peak, prime, and career, with more individual and team accomplishments.

I'm a big fan of Soviet era players, but I think you can definitely make the case for Malkin or Ovechkin.

Fedorov? I don't know. His peak is off the charts but it only lasted a couple of seasons. But then again, similar thing can be said about Kharlamov and Bure.

Makarov and Fetisov were great for more then a decade. And they both were very valuable all-around (Makarov's defensive game is underrated, heck of a penalty killer).

There was also Firsov, who pretty much OWNED a decade, but never played vs NHL players.

I can only go from the players i watched and Fedorov was hands down the best of the lot.He was a special special player. He was world class in every aspect of the game.Detroit being a 4 line team in all situations hurt Feds numbers. The lack of the 2 line pass helps the modern era players.Feds had a cannon of a shot, voted by many the best pure skater ever.
I think Malkin is a great player but Feds was something to see.
Malkin and everyone else looks clunky compared to Feds.If you watched the two you would see the clear difference.

Why would you? Ovechkin is one dimensional, can't (won't) play defense, & can't get his team out of the 2nd round (even in years when they don't play us. Malkin plays an all-around complete game, is more talented than Ovechkin (I'll give Ovechkin the edge in goal scoring), & far more creative with the puck. Ovechkin plays a bull rush down the boards & cuts across the middle of the slot. Or he just one times on the PP. He's basically the modern day Brent Hull....

Brett maybe, but I think your are vastly underestimating Brent Hull's complete game.

I would have loved to see Malkin have a team of his "own." He's always been back seat to sid.

Bure, OV, Malkin, Fedorov, Datsyuk are definitely the top 5 since i was a kid (no order)

Federov was absolutely elite at both ends of the ice. Blows Malkin out of the water defensively and is at the very least on par offensively. I'd argue better.

People forget how good Federov was.

Since you guys really are enjoying my Sid thread, let's drop this one to the mix also....

3 Stanley Cups
1 Conn Smythe (though on these boards, guys think he got jobbed this year & last)
Calder Trophy
1 Hart Trophy
1 Ted Lindsey

I can't wait for the Ovechkin & Federov fan boys to start jumping all over this...but the truth is there, Malkin is far & away the best Russian NHLer of all time...

Also 2 Ross

3 first team all star.

Fedorov 4 best offensive seasons 120 107 87 86 and Malkin 113 109 106 85. Malkin put up those points in a lower scoring era. Also Malkin has been ppg every season except 1. Fedorov just had 1 ppg season after 96.

Similar players in Fedorov and Malkin. I'm bias, but I'd say Malkin is better than Fedorov and Ovechkin, Ovechkin depending on how you measure. Ovechkin is a machete and Malkin is a Swiss army knife.

Interesting how the Pens have had a clone of Detroit's Yzerman/Fedorov in Crosby/Malkin. Really entertaining to watch.

Malkin doesn't know the word "defense". I saw him defending, sorry, pales in comparison with what Fedorov did on a regular basis.
The problem with Malkin is that Fedorov and Larionov were schooled in the CSKA system where in order to survive under Tikhonov you had to be a good center defensively.
Malkin grew up in the "Run&Gun" Ural hockey school.
Heck, even Datsyuk grew up in the Ural hockey school, but his defensive fundamentals were always good and blossomed in the Detroit "total hockey" system.

This. Makarov was insane in the Soviet league.

710 points, 322 goals in 519 games. 1.37 PPG.

I never watched the soviet league, but 1.37 ppg doesn't seem extremely impressive given the style of hockey played back then. If we're talking all time greats... Era has to count.

Not absolutely positive for Kharlamov, but absolutely positive for the other two.

Top 5
Would rank Makarov, Fetisov and Ovechkin higher right now
Kharlamov and Tretiak maybe

Every penguins is the best thing of all time, we got it...

Can you please tell all your friends. Some of them are arguing with us. That's why we're having to make all of these threads.

(In actuality, I've only seen one of these threads started by a Penguin fan)

For maybe the first time ever, I agree with TheAngryHank.

Fedorov is hands-down my favorite player to watch. Ever.

I wouldn't say he's the best Russian player ever because there were some Russian players in the past that were good and Alex may be the best Russian ever, but Malkin is in the top 5.

I wonder if any Pittsburg fans are old enough to remember Alexandar Mogilny? I know most people can go on YouTube and see three minute clips of players with 10+ season careers and say a guy like Malkin is clearly better, but that's dishonest and just wrong.

Anyways, Malkin is a modern day Mogilny. Sorry Pittsburgh, he's not even in the top 10 of Russian born players.

You act like mogilny played in the 50's, it's not that long ago he was still playing. Malkin is better and it's not even a question.

Especially considering the era that he played in.... it was only the tail end of his career that was dead puck.
