well that's weird, I guess the ads from a couple days ago were stripped from the boards and they're going to be adding different ones

All the JPM/Chase ads in and around MSG make me cringe.

It is all about the money. They are the presenting sponsor. It could be worse. At least the place is still called Madison Square Garden and not Madison Square Garden at Chase Plaza or JPMorgan Chase Garden or some candy-dipped horse **** like that.

The company is emphatic that it will always be called MSG. The only naming rights JPM received was for what used to be the Wama Theater and then some lounges/bars.

I can't mention amounts but will just say that JPM offered a lot of money to rename the arena and it was rejected outright.

Were amounts ever disclosed publicly? Were you in the room when this was being discussed?

I have a feeling B13 is in the know. He can PM me the juicy details if he'd like :naughty:

Anyway, this is from the Sports Business Journal back in 2010:

From the beginning of its renovation project, MSG never intended to sell a full naming-rights package, but Chase lands the highest-level “marquee” deal to the refurbished Garden, with the minimum $30 million-a-year agreement eclipsing even the most expensive annual naming-rights deal in the U.S.

The deal included not only MSG, but marketing assets and tickets at all MSG-owned properties, which include MSG, Radio City Music Hall, the Chicago Theatre, the Beacon Theatre, and the former Felt Forum within MSG.

They hold the arena name as a valuable tool for brand equity. It's worth more to them as "Madison Square Garden" forever than $20 Million cash per year as the "Duane Reade Center".

The Yankees & Cowboys have the same philosophy, but the Yankees screwed themselves pretty badly. They will never give up the naming rights, but when they built the new place they figured they could rename large PARTS of inside the stadium, like "Bank Of America Concourse", deck, lounge, etc... BoA was ready to pay $20M for those rights, which is more than most teams can get for renaming the whole place. But the Yankees were holding out for $25M and then the mortgage crisis really hit and BoA took a walk.

The Yankees ended up signing a bunch of small deals with Delta, Audi, Jim Bean, Kettle One, and Mohegan Sun to sponsor select areas. MSG was able to get Chase to be a big interior naming sponsor for the bridges & lobby. They also have Delta Airlines as a sponsor for the club lounge, but the most exclusive club they don't sell the rights to - "1879 Club" is named in honor of MSG

You can't even see the scoreboard from there.

lol, for sure - it's a place for before/after and intermissions.

What I'd really like to check out are the event level suites that are literally dugouts in the lower rows on the TV side with seats just outside. Those are crazy hard to get access to. You probably need to work for the New York Stock Exchange or something to get an invite in there

Checked a few of them out. Unfortunately most of the ice level suites don't have direct access to the seating from the boxes (you have to leave your suite and walk down a hallway to get to the gate that leads to the seats), and the seating isn't even private...your seats are right next to the seats of a different suite. Kind of lame.

Loving these updated pics on the renovations. Bridge looks like a pretty cool place to sit. Wish there were a few pics of the ice surface from one of those seats.

Also the lobby still looks miles better than what we had!

I work as an equity analyst and cover JPM. I have contacts at the company at various levels of the organization and have heard quite a few rumblings of what might have been offered. The quote Crease posted from the Sports Business Journal was not that far off.

I passed by MSG this morning...it looks like part of the Chase Square Ceiling Experience is some kind of scoreboard/video display on the ceiling.

Top right of this pic you can see the same testing pattern they had on the main scoreboard the other day.

I couldn't get a picture but there is definitely some kind of second level in there, maybe the lobby for the suites.
