I think Treliving did well here. We didn't give up much, we got significant salary retention, and we are adding a known commodity that will add grit and a defense first mentality on the right side of the blueline.

We also still have the flexibility to add another defenseman prior to the trade deadline.

I wonder if we could target Connor Murphy from Chicago. Big, physical D who can play top 4 minutes and is under contract for next season. My only issue with him is his injury history.

I like the trade. Don't think its going to put this team over the top but I like it. Why?

I think you got something that isn't going to help the team much, but you gave up even less. He's playing like a 3rd pair D-man at best, but if this team has ANY further injuries he's going to be better playing than anything else they have. And what did you give up? Basically nothing of value.

His chemistry and fit into the team was really good the first time round. This is critical to know about a player who is being inserted into your squad near the end of a season. How many of our first rounders were squandered by Dubas trading for guys not fitting in.

And because of the Core Fore and their no trade contracts, wtf do you expect to happen regarding getting elite D? Geezus.

The trade had to happen. Both our RHD are out, Gio could be out, and we had Marner playing D last night. We got someone who's a right-handed shot, is physical, and is familiar with our system. Does this move the needle much? No but it appears he isn't done yet.

FWIW ..

Leafs are still paying off the original Lyubushkin trade when they mortgaged futures for a rental player.

The Toronto Maple Leafs will send a 2025 second-round pick to the Arizona Coyotes to complete last February's trade that sent forward Nick Ritchie to Arizona in exchange for defenceman Ilya Lyubushkin., TSN Hockey Insider Chris Johnston reports.

Anaheim will receive Toronto’s third-round pick in 2025 and retain 50% of Lyubushkin’s salary. Carolina will receive a sixth-round pick in 2024 and retain 50% of Lyubushkin’s remaining salary. The average annual value of the contract with the Maple Leafs will be $687,500.

So total rental Lyubushkin cost = 2025 2nd pick + 2025 3rd round pick + 2024 6th rounder.

Also have to consider the cost included dumping Ritchie’s contract, and it’s for two playoff runs not just one

Elliotte Friedman on 32TP: “Yeah they were talking [TOR/ANA], but all of a sudden it [Lyubushkin trade] intensified [after Giordano injury”

I think they traded for him as either Rielly’s partner or as a 7th D.

If we can swing a trade for a better D, they will be Rielly’s partner. If not, Boosh will fill in that role.
There is data from his last go around with the Leafs. When they got to the playoffs he was an anchor for Rielly and they dropped him down to the #7 spot but that was one particular opponent. I suspect, or at least I am hoping, that he is going to be used for specific series. He didn't do well against Tampa last time but its a different year and a different first round opponent. As long as he isn't the only add they make on D I don't care. To be clear though, playoff Boosh was not close to the level of playoff Schenn for them so the idea they can staple him to Mo and succeed isn't supported. just because they play a somewhat similar game.

They still have their 1st, (25th in a weak year so i am not attached to it) all their prospects and a bit of cap room so it does seem like they are doing more or else why pay for the retention?

not thrilled but we're stuck and we have very little trade chips

anyway , babooska does give an effort and is physical

Marner is till one of our best RHD even after this trade.

Nothing to be upset about, if the Leafs can acquire one more RHD, AND the goalies hold their own, AND the big guns don’t shit the bed I think there’s a very good possibility of a deep playoff run……..
