I'm just going off a stat page but he's looked good so far into season and CANvsRUS series.
anyone who's watched him care for a bit more in-depth update analysis on how he's come along?

I've only watched the 2 super series games, and parts of a couple of his games this year, but he's impressed me a lot with his hockey IQ and vision. Don't think you'll ever mistake him for a sniper although he definitely can score, but he's a very quality albeit less flashy playmaking winger. I think he's got a chance to make the WJC team if he keeps it up, and I definitely think he deserved to be drafted in the top 20 of his draft.

It's funny, he's not overly fast, his shot isn't exceptional, his passing is good. His size is average.

Benson has very good hockey IQ as you noted. That makes up for his fairly average physical skillset (by NHL standards).

Definitely deserves a look for the 2017 WJC team. 3 points in the 2nd game against Team Russia for the WHL.

Yeah his size is average, but he's also always been a pretty solid kid even back in SSAC. I think he'll be able to fill out in a similar fashion to a David Perron who is solid and hard to knock off the puck, and can also play gritty in the dirty areas. As you mentioned his shot and skating are good, but not great. I do think we could see some heavy development out of him over the next year though. Missing a significant chunk of last season and likely having to rehab most of the summer basically stripped him of a year of development both on the ice and in the gym. If he can get a good healthy year under his belt we could see his development accelerated, and he could even have a chance at making some noise in training camp next year if all goes well.

To me he just seems like the type of player who might not dominate junior hockey as much as some players offensively, but might transition to pro hockey a lot better than others just because he's such a smart player.

I think so too, he's a very cerebral player. I mean, he rewrote the Alberta Bantam hockey records for a reason.

I imagine he'll fit good with Nuge or Drai down the road. I look at our squad and what we're building, we are assembling a powerhouse.

Benson was 5'11'' 180 lbs at the age of 14.

The average height of 14-year-olds in the U.S. is 5'3.75''. The average height in the AMBHL this season is 5'6.7''.

Benson was a giant relative to his peers when he broke those records.

’Dub Weekly: As Benson’s totals climb to ridiculous heights, WHL exceptional status discussion continues
Kristen Odland, Calgary Herald 02.04.2013

...

Sure enough on Jan. 25, it happened when Edmonton’s Tyler Benson, a forward with the Southside Athletic Club Lions bantam AAA club, set an even more ridiculous AMBHL record when he had a 10(!) point night with two goals and eight assists in a 15-0 victory over Camrose.

To date, Benson has 141 points (56 goals and 85 assists) in 31 games with another two games left in their season. Back not so long ago in 2007-08, Rattie’s tear ended at 75 goals and 56 assists for 131 points in 33 appearances with the Airdrie Xtreme.

...

At this point, many are wondering if Benson, a five-foot-11, 180-pounder, could play full-time as an underage in the WHL next year.

Yeah I think he'd be great with either one of them, but I think Nuge might be his best fit. I can see it 3 years from now looking something like this:

Maroon-McDavid-Puljujarvi
Benson-Nuge-Slepyshev(?)
Lucic-Draisaitl-Caggiula

Certainly, but lots of kids taller and heavier than their peers have played Bantam AAA hockey in Alberta. Hardly the first kid that size to play at that level.

It takes a degree of hockey IQ and intelligence to put up 146 points in 33 regular season games.

What was the point of this post? I honestly don't get it. All he said was he is a very cerebral player and that contributed to him being such a dominant Bantam player, which it did. You think we don't know he had a size and physical maturity advantage on most kids? A lot of us saw him play live in Bantam.

Best bantam player I've seen play in Alberta.

Thanks, my only comment was it takes a cerebral element to re-write the record book like that.

Really no surprise from that poster. He also tried to write McDavid off after preseason claiming Eichel would be better. In fact, that reminds me how good of a read the Eichel vs. McDavid thread would probably be. So many people wrote McDavid off saying he was too weak, and that he wouldn't be able to exploit Dmen with his speed like he did in junior.

I gotta say I agree with the fact he did dominate midget due to size. I watched him live a couple of times and he absolutely dominated but mostly on size alone. His exemption status application was rightly denied.

I think he is a good prospect and probably should have been a top 20-25 pick in last years draft if he was healthy. But I dont think hell ever be a top level elite talent like maybe some where thinking in past years. Hell a guy like Ty Rattie scored similar numbers on same team in midget and was a similar draft pick. Still in AHL

Confused about 2 things in your post here. Benson dominated Bantam, not midget. And Ty Rattie played out of Airdrie in Bantam so I'm not sure what same team you're talking about. Anyways, there's no question Benson's size and physical tools gave him an advantage, but he also thought the game on another level compared to almost all the kids in AAA Bantam that year.

Anyways I agree, he's not going to be a star by any means, but he absolutely has the upside to be a good 2-way playmaking 2nd line winger, or even a 3rd line centre if they wanted to develop him that way. He's the type of player who could play either LW or C if you needed him to.

Such a Hard prospect to gauge. He Might end up Busting entirely or be the steal of the Draft.

He has 33 Career WHL goals after 100+ games and is Below 1 PPG over his WHL Career. Obviously he has had a couple of Injuries but still. Shinkaruk battled injuries and had almost double the production.

I agree, he was a 1st overall Bantam pick who busted, but always has shown enough flashes on a horrible Giants team, and battled injuries which has made him hard to compare to his peers.

Those numbers are also skewed a bit because he played as many games as a 16 year old as he's played as a 17 and 18 year old combined. Most players don't put up much for numbers as a 16 year old.

Another player who had very poor goal scoring totals in junior, but turned into a very good NHL player is Ryan O'Reilly.

LOL not quite. Shinkaruk missed 8 games in his draft year, Benson missed 42. Huge difference there in development missed and "battling injuries." Shinkaruk also was a late b-day and had 3 seasons in the WHL before he was drafted, so in reality was much further ahead in development then, than Benson would be now. Had 100 more games under his belt before draft day. Benson in his 3rd year in the WHL is currently at 1.25 ppg. Shinkaruk finished his 3rd year in the W at 1.34. Saying he had double the production is only true in terms of actual points, not ppg. And on top of that, Shinkaruk played on a significantly better team. MH finished 6, 7, 13 and 9 in the years Shinkaruk played for them, while Van finished 20, 21 and is currently at 20th. Benson is and has been clearly the best player on that team. I have no doubt in my mind that Benson is/was the better player at the same age. He is just now having a chance to catch up in his development

Yeah 45 points in 62 games at 16 is not quite bust material. Dylan Strome had 39 in 60 at 16 in Erie on a team with McDavid. Mitch Marner had 59 in 64 on a team that finished 6th in the OHL. PLD had 45 in 54. That kind of production at 16 is top-10 draft pick material. Benson was completely derailed by injuries. Plus people don't understand the effect that the quality of the team has on player point totals at the junior level. Do you think Sam Steel would have 62 points if he was on Van right now and Benson wasn't there? I don't. Benson has points on 41% of Vancouver's goals in the games he has played this season. Steel had 34% of Regina's in the games he has played. Is that brutal production? GTFO

I opened by saying he might be a bust, or the Biggest steal in the draft. Calm down lol.

I even Pointed out how its hard to gauge him due to playing on a Horrible team.

For a 1st overall Bantam Draft pick who had talk about potentially getting Exceptional Status he has busted so far. That does not mean he wont be an effective NHL'er.

33 Career Goals Halfway Thru his 3rd Season with 100+games is Brutal Production for a Top prospect.

But that doesn't preclude him from going on a tear or Dominating Next season if he finally gets a off season to train and not Rehab. He has so many question marks due to the reasons we both mentioned. Get out of here with the GTFO's

You definitely said "He was a 1st overall pick who busted," which implies nothing, that's pretty direct phrasing ...

wont be attending Oilers training camp apparently due to his injury he has been rehabbing... crazy how much bad luck/injury prone he is. Hopefully he plays a full season this year so we can see what he's got for a full season!!!

If injuries don't mess him up, he's a lock to be a full-time NHLer eventually IMO.

Maybe not on a team's top-six.. but certainly at least as a third-line checker.

He's like the new Lupul and it breaks my heart as a Giants fan cause he's so good.
