I'm always impressed by him when I've seen him play. Just a victim of terrible-team-during-draft-year syndrome. He has very good offensive instincts and does a lot of things right. Very solid player.

That's not what he's a victim of at all... He's a victim of not playing syndrome.

It's a combination of both. He was hurt last summer, never fully recovered, felt obligated to return quicker than he should have and was never at any point close to 100%. In hindsight it was a bad mistake by both the Giants and Benson. Even when he was playing the team had a bad balance of players. Too many playmakers and pass first types and not enough pure scorers. His inability to stay in the line up hindered his ability to create any sort of chemistry and due to a lack of effort and heart on that team I think Benson tried to overcompensate most nights. Not only was he their best offensive player he was their most physical player. That shouldn't be the case. Especially given he was already injured. There was a lot wrong with that team last year from management to inside the room. It was just a bad mix of players. He will slide in the draft and understandably so. I still think people are nuts thinking he'll slide to the 2nd round. If something stupid like that happens some team is truly getting a steal. But even in the mid to late 1st round I think he'll be a heck of a pick and a steal. Injuries aside (and I know, staying healthy is pretty important in the big picture) he is a pretty safe pick, IMO. Too smart of a player to not at least make it to the NHL. What he does from there nobody can say. But all the tools are there.

If he slips out of the first round some team will find themselves getting great value in the 2nd round.

Unfortunately he will not be a first rounder IMO. My bold prediction is him even falling out of the second round. I know it's not a popular prediction amongst fans, but I just see him at end of day being a mid round pick

I hope my caps will take him at 26. Met this guy through a friend. Such a genuine guy, good leader, and I do believe that he will surprise a lot of people. He was named captain of a major junior team at 17...that speaks volumes about his character. If he ends up playing to his potential, the kid is a steal. If not? It's a late first round pick gone. But I do believe that this kid will play in the league and do a fine job.

I hope the jets take him with Chicagos pick before the 31st pick!

Seems like the ideal player for the Jets. His stock has fallen because he hasn't played much this year. Reminds me of White last year but a better player. Tenacious and tough. Injury prone is the only thing that concerns me. Could be that he played on a bad team and was brought back too early to help out.

With how much the draft falls off, I can't see it. I agree he likely won't be a 1st, but he's probably going to get picked in the 40's-50's. Too much potential.

Hoping Leafs take him with the Pitt pick or the Leafs 2nd. I think he could develop into the perfect LW to be paired with Matthews-Marner, at some point/when JVR moves on if we don't get Vesey. He seems smart, hard working, and willing to go to the dirty areas. I hope the Leafs sort of repicate the Dvorak-Marner formula with their first line. Matthews is like the ultimate version of Dvorak, and while we aren't going to find a Matthew Tkachuk easily, I do think we can find someone capable of being the NHL's version of an overaged Matt Rupert (Gritty, hits, goes to the net, willing to stand in-front of the goalie), who was the winger Marner had the most success with last year.

Highly doubt that. I still think he's a first round pick. If not, very early in the 2nd. If he drops to the 2nd round some team is making a stupid mistake. There are players listed ahead of him on the final rankings that absolutely do not deserve to be ahead of him, period. I'm not going to name names but I've seen more than few.

I wouldn't read into that much. He was named captain due to the Giants idiot owner in hopes of selling tickets. He also pushed Benson into returning to the line up (for the same rationale) too early which compromised his health even more so. I do think Benson has a lot of leadership qualities. But it's not as though he was named captain for those reasons specifically. There were a few other players on the team that received more votes to be captain but as I said the decision came down to Toigo. But don't take that as criticism. Most nights when he played he was their best player. He was one of the only guys on the team to give it his all despite the score or situation and despite the fact he was probably at best 70% health at his peak. Even less than that for most of the games he played. That says a lot about Benson and it speaks pretty poorly about the rest of the squad.

don't think he is a 1st rounder, but whoever drafts him will get themselves a NHL player. I'm also certain he will play in the NHL if he plays the way he does.

I think this guy will be one of the best players to be drafted outside the top 5.

I personally don't see this, right now, he doesn't really have any thing to go by to make himself unique, Nylander for example might be light, but he is highly offensive, Benson is not a highly offensive player, nor is he very fast, he just hits a lot, plays with a lot of heart, and has pretty decent offensive skills.

currently listed at 5'11 198 lbs. Who ever drafts him will like him very quickly. Safe pick, hits anything that moves type of player, pretty good hockey sense, defensive game, well.... he is a winger....

I'd argue his hockey IQ makes him pretty unique. He's a very smart player and he has great vision. Too many people are focused on what he was "supposed to be" when drafted and just think he's already a bust. I think that is asinine and very short sighted. A lot of teams are very interested in him and like I've said a number of times in this thread he will be gone in the 1st round. You have to remember there are NHL scouts right now employed by NHL teams that have coached him. And they all absolutely love him. I understand it isn't their call as to whether their respective team selects him. But I'm sure their input will be taken into consideration. They know what he is capable of and they aren't overly concerned about a fluke injury prone season. And I'm confident saying it's a fluke because I'm very familiar with what happened and how it was handled (not very well thanks to a meddling, greedy owner). The extra long rest during the end of last season and this off season will be really good for Benson.

People also have to keep in mind in the 1st round teams mainly want a safe bet player (especially outside of the top 5/10). It's more about getting a player that will play in the NHL (even if they aren't a core piece) as opposed to taking a huge gamble and having nothing to show for it. What Benson brings is as close to a safe bet as you can get. His game translates to the pros very easily. The only question will be his health. And I get that given what happened this past season. I'm sure a handful of teams will be turned off by that but plenty of others won't.

I want the Jets to take him with their second round pick....He is worth a second rounder on pedigree alone, he'd for sure be a first if he hadn't had injury issues. He may well go first round anyway....

Hope that doesn't happen.... Aka Leafs snatch him with Pitts pick or the 31st. I think long term he could be ideal on a Matthews-Marner line.

Guy seems very vanilla to me, there isn't anything interesting in his offensive toolbox. I think he has a good chance of making the NHL though, but not in a top 6 scoring role

I don't know what you base that off of. I think many would've hoped/expected better point totals to this point. But to say there isn't anything interesting in his offensive toolbox is quite a stretch. His vision and passing ability alone is more than enough to draw interest from many. He does need to learn to shoot the puck more though. That is my biggest pet peeve watching his game. Too unselfish. Always looking to pass first no matter the situation. He's good at it so it make sense but his shot isn't bad either and using that more would do him (and his team) more good.

He may not be one of the two primary guys on a line, but he can easily be that complimentary 3rd guy who makes smart passes, goes to the nets, hits and retrieves the puck. Most good lines need that guy.

Most teams are slowly moving past the offensive top 6/defensive 6 designations, its more about a balanced top 9 with an energy 4th line (which features Pkers). Two of my favorite lines growing up, had guys I wouldn't call offensive stars on them, those players were Mikael Renberg on the Legion of Doom, and Jiri Lehtinen on the Lehtinen-Modano-Hull line. Just look at arguably the best line in hockey this year, Kane-Anisimov-Panarin, Anisimov is a middle sixer, yet he centered arguably the best line in hockey this year.

Yeah. This is true.

I think you get more "duos" and balanced scoring than two fixed top-6 "trios" in today's NHL. Depth in the Top-9 is key.

And while Benson may not be the type to ever really carry a scoring line by himself in the NHL...he's a very smart player who does a lot of spadework, and is a sneaky-good passer. His skillset is well tailored to get the puck, cycle the puck, put it on the sticks of the "better" players on whatever line he ends up on...and get to the net.

I'd just categorize him as a "Top-9 Forward". Glue guy, who you can slot in on pretty much any line and he'll help out. Very complementary skillset that i think should shine when playing with better players like the Hlinka for example (which hasn't really been the case with the Giants). Kinda miscast as a go-to scoring guy. But with the potential to play up the lineup in a supporting role - and the kind of player coaches are always going to want to bump up the lineup.
