Wasnt Ryan O' Rielly the 1st overall pick in the OHL and then ended up making the NHL early as a 2nd rounder?

Love Benson. I really would love the isles to draft him. The only concerns are he has been injury prone. When he plays though he's money. Love him.

Looks like he could miss the rest of the season as the province thinks he may be done.

I don't think he'll be out for the year, although the Giants may decide to keep him out as the playoffs are a long shot now. Groin injuries tend to linger quite a while. I'd be fine with them shelving him for the rest of the year and let him heal up. He was never 100% at any point this season. Bringing him back again early isn't worth it at this point.

That's too bad, a really tough draft year for the kid. If Benson can stay relatively healthy after the being drafted, someone is going to get a good one in the 2nd half of the 1st.

Would love the Oilers to pick if he slides to 2nd round. I still think he has a chance to be selected in the 1st round imo.

No doubt. The people in the know understand what type of player he is. And they won't be dissuaded by an unfortunate injury plagued season. He got hurt originally last summer in Russia and never fully recovered 100%. Played through it anyway was pretty productive despite that but this most recent injury could become worse (unlike the last one, it was more of a pain management situation) so it really isn't worth rushing him back, IMO. I do think he will be back before the end of the season but if he isn't it might be for the better for Benson. I can't believe some think he will slip to the 2nd. Absolutely will not happen.

I just want him to slip to the isles.

Barzal + Benson in consecutive years would be nice. Especially outside the top10

I wonder how this will affect his draft slot and if he will be able to participate in the combine?

Don't see him falling to the 2nd but if he did, WOW a team may get a great deal there.

Ryan O'reilly and Patrice Bergeron are examples of guys who went in the 2nd and made the NHL full time as 18 year olds.

Benson seems to fit that mold

He's been shutdown for the rest of the season because of injuries. I'll assume no U18, either.

That would be a safe assumption. Hockey Canada better choose wisely this year, as relegation to the B pool is a distinct possibly this year.

Ok, maybe not relegation, but this tournament could quite easily be a disaster.

Wasn't he just cleared to play the other day? Guess he played a game and felt bad.

Groins are terrible. I'm still dealing with groin tweaks from 2+ years ago (granted I stopped playing and thus actively trying to heal them), but still.

I see Carolina using LA's pick on him.

LA will probably be in the 26-30 range, and This is just the player you want with that pick.

Quite the precipitous fall, no?

Not really, we see kids rocket up the rankings every year and the inverse applies to kids who are ranked highly in years prior to their drafts. Opinions of players who are 13-15 really mean nothing, this is just proof of that. The McDavids who are identified very early on are the exception, not the rule.

Benson still has a lot of potential, he obviously hasn't been able to stay healthy at the WHL level and that is a big part of this. His offensive potential also hasn't developed, he was much bigger and stronger than his peers in Bantam and Midget and, like many who dominate for those reasons at those levels, he's stagnated. Still has NHL potential and a pretty high floor.

Lol he has not stagnated... he had been playing with a very bad injury all year on an awful team... this kid is the real deal. This kid competes his ass off, he has the mind of a hockey player and will be a good pro for a long time.

Wonder how much this injury will affect his draft stock... kind of reminds me of the Morgan Rielly scenario. Seems like a good value pick in late first / early 2nd round.

I have seen him play live, he was a force that night and I was impressed. He's an agitator that's easy to hate but he has skill as well. He reminded me of Logan Couture...worth the time to get him healthy.

He had a slow start due to starting the season late but he was absolutely dominant for the rest of his games. He's a very complete player with lots of untapped potential. He will be a steal in this draft if he can stay healthy in the future.

As a jets fan I wouldn't mind them using Chicago's first rounder or their own second rounder on this guy....
