Benson has had a tough year so far and imo, looks uninterested most nights. I saw him play maybe 30+ games last year and almost every home game this year and he is a shell of the player he was. He still has the potential to play a big, fast game but he just doesn't. He doesn't seem to possess that power when entering the zone and if the game isn't close he doesn't backcheck. Many of the goals he's scored this year have been tap ins or lucky shots, not skills goals. And that's not to say he doesn't have a boatload of skill. But he's had a real tough time getting to those dirty areas or really doing anything with the puck. He also takes dumb retaliation penalties when he gets frustrated, and I get it, he's a kid. But he's also the captain of his team.

Obviously, the Giants are terrible this year and that's definitely not helping, and he came off an injury and started the season late. But he's not the world-beater or creator he was last year, and that's worrisome. For example, Ty Ronning has been incredible this year, creating chances every shift, carrying the play, doing something.

Benson needs to start caring about hockey again if he wants to be a first round pick

Ive always thought that if there is 1 person that sees his stock drop significantly in the WHL this year before the NHL draft comes, its him. I have really never been a fan of him and I kinda figured cause he was a 1st overall bantam pick and also named team captain as a 17 year old that his hype would be huge leading into his draft year this year. It's slowly dropping though now and I think it will continue to drop. Good player yes but IMO not a 1st rounder. I think his stock may even drop a couple rounds. And I agree with the above statement about Ty Ronning... hes been great this year and its real nice to see him healthy and playing well

Benson doesn't have an issue not caring about the game. I'd argue the opposite. I think he's trying to do too much at times. Obviously the Giants are a bad team and have this false illusion that they are a couple of players away from being a playoff team. But Benson has constantly bounced around on different lines, changed positions back and forth and hasn't really had a pure finisher to work with. People seem to expect Benson to score a bunch of goals but he isn't a sniper he is a play maker. The Giants are full of players willing to dish the puck but nobody can score. Which is why I was a bit confused when they traded for Trevor Cox. Sure, on paper he makes the team look better but he is another play maker. Who is going to score? So far it's only been Ronning. But he is a one trick pony. He can't do anything else. I'm not convinced that will even last. Whether it's him getting injured again at some point or just coming back to earth. It appears Ronning has finally figured out he can't be a productive player at this level sticking to the perimeter. Unfortunately for him I don't think he has the strength, heart (and instincts) to survive that long term. He constantly has his head down and as I said before he is quite injury prone. Anyway back to Benson now as I got sidetracked. I think it was a huge mistake naming him captain. That was all Ron Toigo. There is already so much pressure on Benson giving him the C just makes it worse especially given how poorly this team has played. I hope he turns it around because he does a lot of things right and has a lot of skill and heart but until he is surrounded with the right piece(s) I'm afraid it may not happen. That doesn't mean he won't be a good pro but his numbers may not stand out in junior. He'll still absolutely be a 1st round pick though, IMO.

He's starting to get in the swing of things now with 10 pts in his last 5 games. Had 1G+2A tonight and is now up to 7G+12A in 20 games on the year. Looking like a solid mid 1st pick

He's warming up but I think a big problem with him is that he peaked early

People forget that in bantam and midget this guy had generational talent potential, he was playing THAT GOOD

I still think he is going to be a mid to late 1st round steal for some team

Yeah he can still become a top 10 pick, it's not too late despite this bad start. He's on a poor team which can affect his numbers but he's a heavy player, skates pretty well, great shot, a lot of battle/grit in him and he has some good hockey. The package is there to be a good top 6 forward and room for his skating to get better in my opinion.

He might have a chance at the U18s as well to improve his stock big time.

Yeah, I can recall some posters saying he would be better than MacKinnon, but you have to take that with a grain of salt when you hear it, since some people really have no idea what they are talking about on here.

Benson reminds me of Lazar a little bit, and I think he will be drafted somewhere similar.

He was flying out there tonight, definitely still one of the top WHL forwards for the draft.

Any similarities to Gilbert Brule in his game?

Fast, good hands, plays with an edge.. sounds like Brule. Except Brule was 5'10" and 180. Benson is already 6'0" and 201.

I don't think there's much. And while I am a big fan of Benson, I wouldn't say he has good hands or he necessarily plays with an edge. He plays hard and he can stand up for himself, but his bread and butter is more of a finesse game than blue collar if that make sense.

I think he's been playing good, and the influx of points here is a product of an improved system, with good players finally playing well together. If you watched him last game he wasn't really creating dangerous chances, he was more playing good hockey and contributing to a good offense if that makes sense. His assists are a good example of that, though the goal was one of those moments you love to see, starts a play with a beauty of a pass, and goes hard to the net to score.

Not really no. Brule was a sniper in junior and the kind of guy that went out of his way to make contact. As I mentioned earlier Benson is more of a play maker always looking to pass first. Which is why I think some of these people claiming he is struggling and underachieving don't really know what type of player he is. I even read somewhere that he doesn't back check. That is ridiculous and flat out wrong.

I tend to disagree. If you watched that last game again Prince George you should have noticed Benson was probably the Giants most physical forward. On one hand that is sad because the Giants really lack size and physicality up front but it isn't unusual for Benson to be their most physical forward on any given night. I do think he is better when he isn't focusing on that but sometimes he tends to run around trying to do a little too much and it distracts him from his skill game. Bonner really needs to address that by acquiring a physical winger. The Cougars started targeting Benson because of that and that has happened quite frequently this season.

1+1 tonight. Scored the GWG late in the third. He now has 14 points in 10 games in December and really seems to be turning it on. I'm excited to see what he can do in the new year.

Kids a sure fire nhler. Doesent stop hitting. Will be a well, worth it late 20s for any team picking in that range.

With the way he's playing right now he'll easily be over a ppg player when the season is over and be taken in the teens.

I saw him play a couple weekends ago and came away impressed, stocky, irritating and chippy. He had some skill a swell. Is he a lock for a top 6 forward no, but would very good as third liner at worst.

The Draft Analyst 2016 Draft Profile: Tyler Benson

Benson is very shifty with tremendous balance, meaning he can continue to move if he gets hit at the same time he decides to change direction. Possessing the kind of vision and IQ he owns makes it no surprise the CHL gave him “exceptional†status to play a full season as a 15 year old (cut short by a knee injury). And while some felt his production last season (45 points in 62 games) was unbecoming of a CHL’er honored in the same manner as John Tavares and Connor McDavid, his ability to swarm the puck and do something with it thereafter makes him a highly-dangerous prospect to overlook. We’re still not sure whether to classify him as a playmaker or a scorer because he can be both, sometimes off the same cycle, when he will either create quality chances for others, or grab the puck and wire a heavy, accurate shot with a quick release.

His PPG is at 1.21 over his last 19 games, and he's had at least one point in 16 of them. Vancouver's won seven of its last 11 after a brutal start, but there's still a good chance the Giants will be cooked by April and Benson can play at the U18's.

He was a top-10 pick after the Hlinka and we didn't punish him for having surgery. He needs to get more press from the mainstream types.

He was never granted exceptional status.

He seems to be getting no attention for someone expected to go in the first round.

The Giants never applied for it. They don't believe in players (regardless of skill) playing full time at that age. And really as a whole the WHL is unlikely to grant that to any player period. Certainly not as frequent as the other leagues.

Yeah, Bob McKenzie wrote a little bit about it in his book Hockey Confidential. If I recall, something about the league as a whole not believing in letting 15 year-olds play full time. There hasn't been anyone deserving of it anyway.

The only one that looks bad is Day, I don't think the OHL has had a 15 year old in recent years that was at the same level as McDavid, Ekblad and Tavares. Granted the WHL may be a bit tougher because of the amount of travel involved compared to the OHL and QMJHL.

Pretty much. And even if there were a player deemed good enough it's highly unlikely the league would give exceptional status. It's just a much different view point in the west than the other two leagues.

He's injured, story of the season, might miss the CHL Top Prospects game now.

He's injured and he hasn't been playing at 100% at any point this season. So it's hard to accurately discuss or evaluate his play up to this point. He was on a decent scoring streak prior to the Christmas break and was playing real well. It would be nice to see him back at full strength soon. The Giants need him if they want any hope of climbing back into the playoff picture. Time is running out.

Looks like he could miss the rest of the season as the province thinks he may be done.

At the start of the year, projected in the top 10.

Could be a massive steal for somebody in the 2nd round or late 1st.

:headache:

Don Cherry's favorite player from this years draft. Guy just thinks he has it all.

If he gets picked in the 25 - 40ish range, could be a huge steal imo
