He was doing really well with Houck and Popoff on the top line before the holiday break.

I thought he's been good, still leaves a bit to be desired. Strong shot, quick strides too, and he's very strong coming out of the corner. I'm surprised he doesn't have more points because he's been dangerous. However I haven't watched the Giants since mid December.

I see some loose talk about the 2016 draft from the dub perspective. I also really like Kryski, not sure how many people have seen him though. His play has tailed off which is a little discouraging, but he looked very good at the start of the year.

I recently did a top 40 players to watch from the WHL for 2016.

Scored a goal and was by far the G-men's best player on the ice tonight. Quick release, heavy shot, and a big puck hound. Looked the part of a high potential pick tonight.

Confirmed.

I also watched the game and he was great.

Appears that people are starting to jump on Benson's bandwagon again.

When were people off of it?

Considering the hype surrounding him you have to admit that he hasn't been as stellar as a rookie this year as some people might have predicted two years ago when he was the next big thing. I don't think many posts in this thread have doubted the kid as anything but a sure fire top 10-15 pick next year.

For his age he looks very well developed. His shot in particular is pretty impressive. Clearly their best player. Should be interesting to see how he progresses.

It seemed like his hype died during his midget year. Going into the U-17 camp in Calgary some were saying that he may have already peaked or that he didn't have a high ceiling/would end up more of an energy guy rather than a scorer.

It's not often that people would say a player is overhyped before playing their rookie season in major junior but that seemed to be the case for Benson.

Pursuit of Excellence exists in this weird media void - the Okanagan is such a sleepy place in the winter and there is literally negative media presence in Kelowna/Westside/Penticton. I think that has something to do with why people stopped talking about Benson so much in his midget year (and they didn't completely, as there were still a few articles to come out last season.

Contrast that with the excitable hockey media that covers Edmonton and the AMBHL/AMHL, which have produced great players for the last 20 years, and you see why Benson's media coverage dropped off last season.

All aside, I see this guy exploding next year and putting up monster numbers, a la Marner/Bennett.

Update on him? I know he's not projected to go top 3 with guys in a draft wth Matthews, Chychurn and Puljujärvi. But could a top 5 pick still be possible?

Ranked 7th by our group at Future Considerations for 2016. We went back and forth between Benson, Steel, and Jost all year.

I wasn't impressed with him the few times I saw him this year. Prob see him a bunch more this upcoming season.

He might explode next season. He's not that tall but he has a strong lower body and a good shot. Uses his body well, physical. A year can make a big difference in the WHL and I think he's a player that can be a top 5 pick if he keeps his identity a PWF with good hands, hard shot, and good hockey IQ.

Just named captain (the youngest ever) of the Giants. Looking forward to seeing what he can do this year.

Not really the smartest move, IMO but it was done for PR. Not suggesting Benson won't be a good captain but I don't think he needs the extra burden of wearing the C. Either way he is ahead of schedule so he may not miss much regular season action.

Really good prospect! He plays with so much pace and power. Plays a pro game already imo. Had a couple of good chances tonight

I haven't had a chance to watch any WHL hockey yet this year :( (aside from the Canada-Russia series this week), but I see Benson has really struggled on the stat sheet (2 points in 7 games) since returning from his injury. I also noticed he wasn't on the Canada-Russia roster.

Is he playing well but snake-bitten or seriously struggling?

Snake-bitten, poor roster, players quitting the team, and a new coach. In the 3 seasons Benson has played with the Giants, he's played for 5 different coaches. I've seen him played at center a bit too this year. It's been a really rough year for the Giants, especially since Benson has come back. He's played really well though. He's so strong on his skates, with his blazing speed and quick release, he's always dangerous. And he's a great passer too. I think the points will start coming soon.

Reminds me of Barzal in that he's highly skilled and may be considered a steal on draft day if he goes in the 2nd half of the first round

My report from last night's game:

"Easily the best player on the ice (and that includes last year’s 1st rounder Nick Merkley). Benson rarely had a shift that he didn’t do something to earn a check mark. He was electric at times in the offensive zone, and had a number of dangerous shot and scoring chances. His goal was a thing of beauty, and showcased his number one asset; his slapper. I was a bit disappointed with Benson’s hands, they are lacking especially in tight, but he played a really solid perimeter game. Not much to hate about this kid. Definite 1st round talent."

Benson has had a tough year so far and imo, looks uninterested most nights. I saw him play maybe 30+ games last year and almost every home game this year and he is a shell of the player he was. He still has the potential to play a big, fast game but he just doesn't. He doesn't seem to possess that power when entering the zone and if the game isn't close he doesn't backcheck. Many of the goals he's scored this year have been tap ins or lucky shots, not skills goals. And that's not to say he doesn't have a boatload of skill. But he's had a real tough time getting to those dirty areas or really doing anything with the puck. He also takes dumb retaliation penalties when he gets frustrated, and I get it, he's a kid. But he's also the captain of his team.

Obviously, the Giants are terrible this year and that's definitely not helping, and he came off an injury and started the season late. But he's not the world-beater or creator he was last year, and that's worrisome. For example, Ty Ronning has been incredible this year, creating chances every shift, carrying the play, doing something.

Benson needs to start caring about hockey again if he wants to be a first round pick
