Skating style is a carbon copy of Patrick Marleau, looks like a 16 year old Marleau out there, though don't think he has his top end speed.

His skating looks a bit choppy. I hope Vancouver has him practice with a power skating coach. It would really improve his stride, and speed, and basically just his general skating overall.

Though, he's got two years, so I bet that will be worked on anyways. Nice to see that he got his first goal.

1g1a for benson tonight
2g2a through 3 games

Goal was the game winner, he just through it towards the net and it went in off a dman.
Assist was on an empty netter where he made a nice unselfish pass where he could have iced it himself if he wanted to.

Benson with a huge hit on Jesse Lees, Lees was on the ice for a few minutes. It didn't look like a bad hit to me, but Benson was given 5 and a game.

No call on the play, when Lees didn't get up the refs changed their minds and gave him 5. Brutal call.

I've seen all 3 Giants games this year and Benson has looked solid. Plays a great 2 way game and uses his size well. Plays physical (as illustrated tonight) and isn't afraid to get his nose dirty. He still makes mistakes like any 16 year old and has a tendency to try to do it all himself, that said he is a fantastic passer and is so much fun to watch

That ref #29 Bennett is trying his best to put his mark on the game.

Benson looks faster than he did at u17 camp.

Really like how he looks early in the season. Such a powerful skater. Hope he grows another inch or two.

So through 12 GP he's got 11 points (including 3 goals, 1 of which was on the PP), which is good for 5th on the Giants and 4th league-wide for rookies (tied w/ Sam Steel with 2 less GP). Also 2nd on the Giants in +/- with a +8, if that matters to you.

The 2016 draft eligible in the WHL are looking great, especially Kryski, Steel, Gregor and Benson. Even Nolan Patrick for the 2017 draft is doing alright.

It's time for a mid-season update, I suppose.

In 29 games played so far this year, Benson has 8 goals, 15 assists, 23 points. He has 31 PIMs and is a +10; he has the highest +/- of any player on his team. He is, however, ranked 7th in point scoring on the Vancouver Giants as of now.

How has he looked?

He's currently in the running for top10-15 picks but not the player some were projecting

Probably a fair assessment of the situation.

I don't think he's even the top draftable guy from the WHL for 2016, let alone a candidate for 1st overall. Western Canadian guys I probably like a bit more are Steel and Jost.

I think he's likely a top 10 guy though.

Do you think Steel has what it takes to crack the top 5?

I'm extremely high on Jost. Nice to hear his name tossed out there. He is an absolute gamebreaker and not a lot of 16 year olds can impact the BCHL game like he has thus far.

Well it was matter of time till one of the hyped guys didn't end up being what we had thought.

Being this far out from the draft, and the fact that I haven't seen much from guys other than the the WHL, I usually try and stay away from predicting which guys might get slotted into what spots.

But yeah, I think Steel has the potential and ability to be a 5th overall type of guy. Will that happen? Impossible to say with any certainty, but he's a game-breaking talent and is extremely smart. Reminds me a lot of Jordan Eberle.

Benson is pretty freaking polished already at the WHL level. Does not look out of place on the 1st line going up against top competition.

His offense all comes from the confines of playing the team game. Not at all worried about his lesser production to others. Surprised there isn't more goals, but they'll come, he gets chances in the games I've watched.

Really strong on his skates.

Very strong.

The way he skates and his style of game actually reminds me a lot of Taylor Hall.

I saw Benson play at 14, in his draft year to the WHL. He reminded me a lot of RNH (although i didn't see Nuge play until he was in the Dub.) In that, you wouldn't notice him a ton, but he'd have 2 goals and 2 assists at the end. Nuge was very much like that in junior.

He's trending very well for a rookie, at a point per game pace. (or was before his injury, it will take him a bit to get going i think, but should get back there) You don't see that much for 16 year olds in the dub.

Hi pace is comparable to the rookie years of Barzal, Draisaitl, Sam Reinhart, Johanson, RNH.

There's also some players in there at 2/3'rd ppg in their rookie years like virtanen, and Evander Kane.

There's also some players in there at a ppg that fizzled out or ended up just servicable nhl'ers.

We'll really know nothing until next year about where he'll end up. But he's projecting just fine i think.

Also, everytime I've seen him with Sam Steel (which was only twice)on the same ice, Benson has had the better game. Small sample size, i know.

He was doing really well with Houck and Popoff on the top line before the holiday break.

I thought he's been good, still leaves a bit to be desired. Strong shot, quick strides too, and he's very strong coming out of the corner. I'm surprised he doesn't have more points because he's been dangerous. However I haven't watched the Giants since mid December.

I see some loose talk about the 2016 draft from the dub perspective. I also really like Kryski, not sure how many people have seen him though. His play has tailed off which is a little discouraging, but he looked very good at the start of the year.
