He's been recalled by the Giants and will be in the lineup tomorrow against Seattle.

He just finished up his first few games with Pursuit of Excellence at the NAHL Showcase in Blaine, Minnesota.
The team won four of their five games and he's tied for the NAPHL U18 scoring lead already.

Him against Barzal will be a great debut. Hope he holds his own against him.

bump...
Game starts in half an hour. It's Shaw's tv game of the week for anyone who gets Shaw in western Canada. Some interesting new guys for both teams aside from the big 2. Looking forward to seeing this one....

The official limit is 5 games. Until his midget teams season ends that is, then he can play full time. Brayden Point played in every playoff game (and kicked ass which is why I remember him as an example) a couple years ago due to that. There are injury exceptions also, which led to Matt Needham playing about 20? (reg.season) games with Kamloops as well.

Heading to the game. Anyone else to keep an eye on out there?

From Seattle: Matthew Barzal and Shea Theodore for sure. Roberts Lipsbergs is also a guy to look out for.

Vancouver: Dmitry Osipov, Ty Ronning, and some other undrafted guys can stick out. Then you have guys like Geertsen, Houck, and Kulak that have been drafted who can make an impact.

Benson's debut with the Giants is tomorrow night. There's been a lot of hype (even in the local media) so I'm looking forward to it. I hope someone will post some feedback who went to the game.

So..... how did he look? minutes played, skating, positioning and all that jazz... I'm assuming by his +1 he didn't appear to be in over his head. look forward to reading about his first game.

Saw the game last night, and watched Benson closely. Given that both Tri City and Vancouver played a night earlier, and that Benson was advertised as something of a showcase in the local media, I expected to see more of him. Nonetheless, I've written a short report on what I saw:

Scouting Report from November 17, 2013 (Vancouver, B.C., Canada):

In the second of back-to-back games for both teams, it appeared as though Giants coach Don Hay was both carefully evaluating and protecting the 15-year-old prospect... played fewer minutes than I expected, and only in 5-on-5 situations... best described as an aggressive and fast two-way forward with above average physicality and hockey sense... gets a step on the opposition in just a few strides, thanks to powerful first steps and mechanically sound, protracted strides... fast enough to be the first man back on almost every play, whilst showing seemingly minimal effort on the backcheck--a further testament to his deceptive skating prowess... looked best in the offensive zone, where he used his braveness and creativity to create a couple of chances... showed a willingness to go to the difficult areas, vis-a-vis, the front of the net, the corners, and the slot... possesses the ability to skate the puck into open space while roving the offensive zone, from which he threw the puck into the slot creating a couple wild chances... probably deserved a point for Tyler Morrisson's third period game-winning goal, as he distracted opposing goalie Eric Comrie by aggressively crashing the net... looked his worst in the defensive end, where he appears to be a WIP at the major junior level... might need work on stickhandling in close-quarters against larger players... on a couple of occasions, he was easily stripped of the puck in the corners... at one point early in the third period, he fumbled the puck in his own zone creating a costly turnover in the slot, and was severely restricted in his ice-time thereafter... by way of limited ice time, Benson never reached top-speed, and thus, Giants fans weren't able to see his peripatetic side as advertised... fans still came away happy with the home team winning by a score of 5 to 2.

Excellent scouting report! Thank you kindly for it, Alex.

I watched the Calgary Royals Midget AAA team a few weeks ago, it's been so long since i've played or watched midget hockey (i'm in my 30's). For reference the Royals are the best midget team right now in Alberta. I was shocked at how different midget hockey is from Junior. It's way more physical than junior and pro, you only have about 2 seconds to make plays and then you get creamed. The teams are terrible at setting up in the offensive zone because basically everyone plays "man to man" and as soon as you get the puck you get hit. Because of this, all the goals seem to happen off of broken plays.

The league is good for preparing a person for a faster pace (although juniour and pro are obviously way quicker) and you learn how to take a hit (although every kid at the level already knew/knows), and how to avoid hits. But in some way, i think, and especially for some star players it can be a bit of a disservice because you're not able to make plays like you can in juniour and pro.

I looked at some of the past years stats for alberta and BC, and it's funny how very few names stand out amonst the top point getters, and i think the reasons i went over above are why.

The whole point of this, is I know Benson is lighting up midget at the POE in BC right now, but i think he'll need to make adjustments to his game at the juniour level. He'll have more time to make plays, as long as he uses his speed. (In midget speed kills, but because of the coverage it's hard to ever get going.)

I find myself comparing benson a lot to Ryan Nugent Hopkins. (They play a very different game, but Nugent Hopkins dominated bantam, made some adjustments to his game to also lead the BCMHL in scoring, but then had to make some adjustments more back to his bantam game game (has more time to make plays so utilizes it) to dominate junior. Where some players dominate bantam, don't ever adjust well to midget, but then go on to do well in junior.

Benson has been named to Team Pacific at the U17's as an injury replacement for Grayson Pawlenchuk.
As far as I know, he'll be the first underager to play for Team Pacific.

He'll join fellow 98's Mitchell Balmas (Atlantic), Vojtech Budik (Czech Republic), Valentin Busch (Germany), Jakob Chychrun (Ontario), Sean Day (Ontario), Tobias Eder (Germany), Libor Hájek (Czech Republic), and Artyom Ivanyuzhenkov (Russia) as underagers at the tournament.
Jordan Maher (Atlantic) and Albin Sethsson (Sweden) were also invited, but cut.

I've seen Benson playing some times this season and I think he'll be a very early draft pick in 2016. He has a great shot that he gets off of his stick very quickly. He has some insane puck handling skills and vision to go along with the shot. I'd like to see Benson improving his skating a little bit; there's nothing wrong in it, it just needs some fine tuning. More power and agility and he'll be even more dangerous. I won't be surprised if he puts a lot of points next year in the Dub.

Looks like he had a hell of a game yesterday, getting in on all of his teams seven goals.

http://nahlprospects.stats.pointstreak.com/boxscore.html?gameid=2250367

That puts him at 40 points (14+26) in 21 games in NAPHL games, and 23 points (11+12) in 10 games in the CSSHL. Keep in mind that the NAPHL has only eighteen minute periods, or so.

I have a feeling he's going to be talked about a lot more around here in the near future. He really is a special player and can't wait to see what he does when he gets to the dub full time.

I'm going to assume he's playing sheltered minutes? 7 games and no points for Benson so far. I realize rookies in the WHL in their first few games don't usually produce much (if at all) but with all the hype on this kid I thought he would have had a point or two by now.

Unfortunately, I have not been able to watch any Giants games being on the east coast throughout the school year.......but that being said, I do remember Don Hay being VERY particular about defensive play and team structures. I would not be the least bit surprised if that kind of coaching takes a toll on chances for a 15 year old just joining the team.

Not to derail, but did a search and found nothing of his own thread...is Sam Steel going through the same thing? only 3 games this year.

I know rookies in the WHL can't play the full season right after they're drafted, because they're all 15 years old when drafted. I don't know why the WHL drafts kids at 15 instead of 16 like the OHL/QMJHL. So draft picks of that year can only play when their minor team season is over, with a few random call ups in between I think.

Really? Can't believe I didn't know that already...kinda wanna take my own 'hockey card' away(like a man card)

EDIT: Kinda seems dumb IMO.

Was wondering why he hasn't been in the lineup the last couple games, turns out he's out for the rest of the year with an injury. Brutal.

Any predictions for how he'll do next season as a full-timer with (I'm assuming) a good amount of ice time? Judging by the hype this kid has gotten you'd think he's expected to score 40 as a rookie.

You mean 40 points right? I would say that is his likely output.

I believe the WHL had problems with kids committing to NCAA colleges at around 15 so they had to make the kids get drafted at around age 15 and then get them into games during their 15-year-old season so that they would be ineligible for NCAA hockey. Not sure why the OHL and QMJHL didn't have this problem.

Benson notched his first WHL point with an assist for the Giants on Saturday. Any reports on how much he played and how he looked?

I didn't keep an eye on his ice time. He looked very good, his assist was off a rebound and I noticed he was shooting the puck often, almost whenever he had a chance.

Tyler Benson Plateau'ed?

Is Tyler Benson still considered one of the top picks for the 2016 draft? He seems to have plateau'ed in the past year and a half. To me Sam Steel appears just as effective, and plays center. How far down in the draft could T. Benson fall?
