News Flash! Nikolaj Ehlers is very good at hockey.

Did okay without Drouin this season....

News flash.

I was mocking my fellow Canuck fans for not picking Ehlers. They all disagreed with me and said he was no good without Drouin. They think Virtanen is a GOD because he has 'size' in spite of Ehlers Nylander and Ritchie having obviously more skill.

I know. I was supporting your argument.

Ehlers ends up leading the Q in playoff scoring, despite playing 8 fewer games than the runner up.

(Another Jets' prospect Petan led the W in playoff scoring).

Also, Jets prospect Jan Kostalek leads all CHL d-men in playoff scoring!

Add in Hellebuyck owning the World Championships in goal as well.

The preceding all suggests that the Jets are out-scouting pretty much everyone else of late. The Jets future pipeline is freakin' stacked.

Not to mention Jan Kostalek who lead the QMJHL and CHL in scoring for a defensemen during the playoffs.

Lots to look forward to for Jets fans. :)

Edit: Gump beat me to it.

When was the last time someone in the QMJHL or the CHL for that matter lead their respective league in playoff scoring despite only playing in just 2 rounds of playoff hockey?

This list is a bit flawed isn't it? Adding Ehlers' and Meier's % actually ends up being over 100%.... and what about the rest of the team?

I'm not sure I'm getting this. Ehlers had 101 pts and his team scored 227 goals. So that's 44.4%.

It only counts the goals scored while the player was actually in the lineup.

And Meier and Ehlers were in on a lot of the same goals.

Playoffs:

Ehlers (32 points / 50 team goals): 0.62
McDavid (49 points / 84 team goals): 0.58

It's a list based on only the games the players played, not total games. Ehlers quite obviously missed time due to WJC, so that factors into it. I also don't think you understand how the percentages work, if you think Ehlers + Meier = over 100% of the goals. >_>

Uh...... Ehlers assists on a Meier goal... that's only one point but both get a point off of that.

Also it's only for games in which the player dressed.

Note: I'm the author of that table.

What do you think will be Ehlers' biggest obstacle in transitioning his game to the NHL?

What he's done in his junior career has been very impressive, can he step into a top 6 role in the AHL and post solid numbers as soon as next season?

McDavid played against SSM and Oshawa. Much tougher match-ups.

Not to say one is more impressive than the other but Halifax also played #2 overall seed in the Q in Moncton and was also the lower seed in round 1 vs Shawinigan.

As little support as McDavid had offensively, Ehlers had even less.

ya but McDavid is younger which is a huge factor

Certainly. But the only real comparables on this stat for Ehlers seems to be players like McDavid and Crosby in their draft year. I don't think Ehlers is a "generational" talent like those two, but it illustrates how remarkable Ehlers' performance has been this season.

In my mind his biggest obstacle will be how quickly he can adjust to the lack of time and space he'll have in the NHL as opposed to junior. He's going to need to utilize his teammates much more than he's had to till now, the IQ is clearly there though so I don't think it will be too hard of a transition.

I think if they put him on a line with a couple of strong possession players to ease him in he could be a solid NHL top 6 as soon as next season. Personally I'd like to see them try a 1A/B line of Ladd-Little-Ehlers.

Ehlers may not be a generational talent, but it is certainly possible he develops into a franchise type player. An offensive catalyst and a consistent point per game player who may push into the 85-90 point range in good year.

87 points was the Art Ross trophy last season.

I think 60-65 point upside is realistic for Ehlers in the current NHL

I agree. I also wouldn't mind seeing him play with guys like Scheifele, Perreault, Wheeler or Petan (eventually). Give him a bit of time and space and a really smart line-mate or two and I think he'll be very dangerous in the NHL. His vision and hockey sense is top-notch, to go along with his dynamic skating and hands.

I don't agree. Ladd and Little are both players that have reached that range, and Wheeler has eclipsed it, and I see Ehlers as having considerable more offensive potential than any of those players.

I don't think he'll hit 85-90 points in today's NHL though. Not impossible, I just don't see it.
