You guys do know that its probably from the same scrum right?

And there isn't an actual quote from Laine in the NHL.com article unless i am missing something. All it says is this:

From this article: https://www.nhl.com/news/patrik-laine-believes-he-should-be-top-pick/c-280886088

That isn't a quote, unless I am missing something.

So can you show a quote Laine saying he'll equal Ovy in 5 years?
If you can't you shouldnt make those claims.

Thats from NHL.com article, whom I trust a bit more than a tweet.

How exactly is NHL.com more trustworthy then the person who literally asked the question and is the host on the most popular hockey show in the country?

Just because its in an article doesn't make it anymore "right" or "wrong" than a tweet.

So far, we don't know whether Laine said or did not say whether he will be "equal" "like" or "comparable" to Ovechkin.

This is so pointless and like I said before, this is just arguing semantics.

There are a lot of actual quotes from Laine in that article so why the **** wouldn't that be a quote from him? Again, you really think a tweet by some reporter is probably more accurate than this whole article on nhl.com, which like you mentioned, are both probably even from the same "scrum"?

Do you honestly think Laine would've answered straight that he will equal Ovi in 5 years when the question to him was "who would you compare yourself to"?

I ask you again what is your purpose in this thread because you are making yourself look very stupid?

You should go and read "To kill a mockingbird".

You say I am looking stupid, you don't know what a quote is man.

Look at what I just bolded.

You are arguing that plain text and a quote are the same thing.

Please lookup the definition of a quote. Just because an article has a bunch of quotes from Laine does NOT mean he said everything that is being paraphrased by the Author. It's no better or worse than the Score headline of the Reda tweet.

So basically you have nothing yet you made a claim he said he'll equal Ovy in 5 years.
You don't have a quote of Laine saying he'll equal Ovy in 5 years so you can't claim he has said that but you claim he has said that because you're a Leafs fan and it fits to your goal.

Like already said that article is full of quotes from Laine, and twitter said all kind of things what Laine supposedly said.
Like Laine told someone he's Rw when he's made clear he's Lw for example. Your tweet didn't even make any sense.

And the tournament, nevermind the season hasn't even started.

Why are you making this stuff up, I never argued such thing. Only thing I argued was that I find it far more realistic that the "plain text" on the article on nhl.com regarding who Laine compares himself to is way more probably an actual quote from Laine himself, than the tweet which doesn't really have any basis on it. And it's not like it's just a "plain text", it's a whole interview of Laine, with a lot of actual LAINE QUOTES.

Are you saying that you think the writer of the article on nhl.com suddenly made up the statement that Laine would hope to be as good as Ovi in five years? And it's more probable that Laine said he will equal Ovi in five years, because a reporter tweeted so?

Why are people arguing about a Laine quote from early June? Is there really nothing more relevant that can be discussed about a player currently participating in the world cup of hockey?

I'm sure the usual suspects will circle back to whine about Laine being a disappointment at the tournament soon enough.

Am I the only one who finds this comical? A Leafs fan is trying desperately to discredit a very young and highly promising prospect, based on what someone had tweeted rather than actually reading an entire article. Fortunately seems like most of the fan base doesn't seem to resort to this kind of childishness. Geez, still, there should be a whole another section for these insecurity issues or whatever they are in order to be able to discuss about the player instead of having to debate about this non-sense on daily basis (no matter how funny that may be).

Fortunately Most of us are intelligent enough to know what Laine meant and what kind of talent he is. And most know he may need an adjustment period when he comes to NA. Was he the best NHL ready prospect from the 2016 draft? I don't think anyone claimed this. Even the scouts Mckenzie spoke to that were quoted to think long and hard who was the #1 pick this draft. I doubt it was on the notion on who would come out of the gates the fastest. Which we do not know yet, given we are only 2 exhibition games into the world cup. But one day, which I suspect some fear he may be. Which is why we see these type of insecure posts in a Laine thread. My 2 cents.

You do realize that the 5 pages before were about laine fans debating how tall he was in pictures taken before and after he was officially measured? Thats not insecurity?

From the start my position has been the same. As a leaf fan, my team was in the position to pick between two supreme talents. I wanted to discuss laine as he was a legit possibility for my team (Hunter and Lou have both built teams around wingers) Matthews is the sure bet, Laine had the big game unique potential.

I questioned how he would translate to the Nhl with smaller ice, intense board/cycle games and dirty area goals, rather than off side half wall. I got questioned and laughed at..... 2 games in to a meaningless tournament, I can see what I was questioning coming to play. Any person who has a casual understanding of hockey should have seen this coming. My question remains... How will he adjust to the different style of play? If he does, the jets have a keeper.

Can the finish fanatics at least admit that he will have to adjust and translate his game to adapt?

Some posters want to use that quote against Laine and prove how he's a overhyped dissapointment, like we today saw again.

Just this offseason that has been brought up in probably 5 different occasions and will be brought up regularly by x posters to prove their goal.

Ofcourse he has work to do and he has said that himself.
So far he's had just few practises and 2 games in NHL sized rink, he'll have about a month(plenty of practises+playoff type games) to get used to it before the seasons starts, and why I like this World Cup for Laine.

I expect him to feel a lot more comfortable on the ice when the season starts. That's the biggest difference I see now with Laine and Matthews, Matthews seems like he's at home on NHL rink when Laine is trying to learn the timings and so on.

I have faith in Laine, he knows his weaknesses and he's a high IQ player. I've said it before but neither McDavid or Eichel were dominating players in their 1st NHL games, it is/was ridiculous to think Laine would be dominating right away against superior talent.

Laine has already proven to be an immense talent, and there's a reason why he was ranked in the top 2 of the past draft. I think it's a little condescending to think that he may not be able to adjust to the NA size ice (not pointing the finger directly at you here) and game. It's a matter of when not if, and when that happens is really anyone's guess. Leaf fans coming in and saying he needs time in the AHL are just here to spark a fire, and it's getting out of hand and ridiculous. Matthews has looked great in his first 2 games, so much you just had someone in that thread state they don't even think McDavid was as good at this age... I get it, some Leaf fans are excited, and rightfully so, but im tired of the NAH NAH NAH MY GUY IS SOO MUCH BETTER OMGGGGG YOUR GUY SUCKS CANT EVEN PLAY, essentially.

I think you should have been here when Laine was scoring pp goals against germany and belarus......

My issue was and is that in my opinion, there he has a playing style in itself that does not lend itself to NHL success. He scores the majority of his points on off side power play 1 timers, in areas that are low percentage in the NHL. My opinion has always been that higher impact players need to play in the dirty areas, and perform in tight and close.

He seems to rely on time and space and does not have the first step acceleration to create it for himself. After months of questions not a single person has said how they expect him to adjust. What specifics they would like to see in his game to make him a threat 5 on 5 in the offensive zone..... Just like you did. Vague references to talent.....

In my opinion it is not just a simple, he has a great style just has to get used to handling quicker passes.... it is that his style is less projectable to the NHL style

How do you think he solves this. What would you suggest?

Laine has fantastic hands, absolute elite for player of his size.
If you take away his shot he'll be a high end playmaker which makes him more of a threat than just a pure sniper, he loves to shoot but he's not a desperate shooter.

His shot is special and he will be able to score goals with that that only very few can, Rask, Barkov already say he has one of the best shots in the NHL, release/power/accuracy.

His biggest weakness is the 1st few steps but he has said that is his priority 1 and will be moving forwards.

Laine has succeeded at every level he has participated in thus far. All before he turned 18 and just after he turned 18. Why would anyone be overly worried whether he can adapt to a smaller ice surface? He already has above average size, an elite skill set, self confidence, hockey IQ, and a great work ethic he will bring into the NHL. For those citing he needs a better first step. Well yeah he is not a perfect prospect. No one has suggested he is. He is a very good skater already.

I don't see any concerns here that he will be a guaranteed top winger in the NHL. The question only in my mind is just how good he will become. Which for Laine the ceiling is the best winger of his generation which is certainly not out reach given what he already has accomplished.

That was btw some pretty damn epic trolling. You could see what it was mile afar, but when the heat got on you totes find yourself going "your mother needs time in AHL!" despite.

That's "Asterix and the Roman Agent" stuff. I hope it gets nominated for this year's Troll Finlandia.

Who the **** thinks Laine should be in the AHL?

No matter what you think of his performance in 2 meaningless exhibition games, the fact that he can keep up with an unbelievable Swedish team and not be responsible for a goal against every other shift is proof enough the kid will be fine in the NHL. He won't face anywhere close to this level of all-star talent even if he ends up in the SC Finals against Pittsburgh or whatever Eastern powerhouse.

He's definitely been overhyped by some super-fans ("best winger of his generation", "better than Ovi", etc") here, but that doesn't mean we (Leafs fans) need to actively try and tear him down. Cut the kid some slack. Barely 18, coming off an injury, and zero experience on smaller ice --are probably the most challenging circumstances out of what any other player in this tourney is facing.

how would you suggest he improve? You have posted his "resume" about 100 times, but havent suggested any specific analysis.
