It's 2 Exhibition Games. Laine and Finland are playing Sweden who are looking like they are going to be one of the teams to beat this tourney. They are going to make a habit of making star players look ordinary this tournament. Let's see a better more rounded sample of games against other teams. IE Team NA, Russia, and USA.

Laine's microscope is the fault of not only himself but the fans and media hyping him to be "better" than Matthews. He said he is the next ovi, fans say he is better than Matthews, so he better be good.

So far score sheet aside as that is irrelevant, Matthews is notiable every time he is on the ice, always driving a play or being a force in the corners. He plays like a power forward, and already looks like one of team NA best players.

Laine IMO has been the opposite. Largley unnoticeable, with a few moments of seeing him show up out of nowhere with a chance. While some might say "You can see flashes", in my opinion it's more like his old tricks dont work with the faster pace and less room of an NHL rink. This was also discussed a lot before hand. Will he be able to figure out how to play on NA ice? If so, does he become the elite player he was projected? Or a 2nd line scorer who has a few 30 goal years?

To me you can clearly see the tier difference here. Laine is a complimentary piece, while Matthews drives the play. I now question those who hyped Laine so much after the Leafs won the lottery.

When exactly did he say he's the next ovi? Stop posting this **** here, it's ridiculous. Laine has played his first two matches so far on a NHL sized rink against a team that is probably better than any NHL team, and you make such assumptions. :help:

Good post

Yay, let's use 2 games against one of the best defensive cores in the tournament to judge a prospect.

PS: Matthews is one of the lowest CF% players on team NA, in case you think 2 exhibition games matters so much.

Will Leafs fans just give it a rest already? holly **** this is annoying. Yes, Matthews has faired better in the first 2 meaningless games, congratulations. You guys want a medal and some cookies or something? Matthews is the better prospect, there's no denying that, so there were a few people who thought otherwise, get over it. So because Laine hasn't played at the top of his game against one of the best teams in this tournament and Elite level D on every pairing, means he sucks and should be in the AHL, am I doing it right?

That's fine, but what does it have to do with these two exhibition games? Are leafs fans really this insecure?

Of course it doesn't prove anything, its two exhibition games.

The hype train though was always completely out of control and needs to settle down in order to avoid disappointment.

Did I just hear someone yell Matthews being on his own tier after two practise games where one was facing a team with 2nd best D core in the world and other well.. a D core. If comparing prospects in general, since when has two pre-season practise games have erased the whole previous season where prospect (lets just say) X outscored prospect Y in every single tournament they played one another? Welcome to HFBoards fellas!

What exactly is your purpose in this thread? "Hype train" police?

You mean like McDavid was "shut down" by Sbisa and other defenders on Team Europe yesterday? These are ridiculously small sample sizes.

Of course it will take Laine a bit of time to adapt, but judging where he stands based on a game here or there is a bit short-sighted.

McDavid still looked dangerous last night and was a threat whenever he was on the ice. A bit rusty as expected but was able to generate offence on his own.

Laine could barely keep up with the speed of the game and has looked somewhat overwhelmed at the lack of time and space to execute plays. It's been four months since he last played so I give him the benefit of the doubt but judging from the overall body of work McDavid has been way more impressive than Laine. Their performances aren't even remotely comparable.

You asked me when did Laine say he was the next Ovechkin. I gave you the link to when he said that......

It's not a straight quote. Those "he said this" news articles can be caused by something like "If you were to equal Ovechkin, how many years would it take?". That's why I would almost ignore anything that's not a direct quote.

Anyway, it's a great thing that he has high expectations for himself. Too often Finnish talent dies down due to "It's good enough if you do your best and have fun".

Now you're just embarrassing yourself, but not surprised. It's what you do in every Laine related thread.

We've been through this so many times yet time after time a Leafs fans brings that up.

What Laine said was
that he hopes he could be like his idol (Ovy) in 5 years, well done again.

For the last bolded, Matthews has played against the worst team in this tourney and Laine against all star team, that includes 3 elite #1D's, 2 1/2D's and #2D in his 1st games in NHL rink and you can tell they are different tier players
Let's see Matthews be the driver against Sweden, have the room he's had against Team Europe, that team is garbage.

"and said he would hope to be as good as his favorite player five years into his NHL career"

Booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooom.

Don't these all mean the same exact thing? Why are people jumping at the guy who just posted a quote from Laine himself?

It is only 2 games. This is just as meaningless overall in terms of where the 2 kids will end up in 20 years as people fawning over laine scoring on the pp against germany and belarus.

However, it does demonstrate what I know personally I have been curious about the whole time. The kid has big game potential and tons of tools, but simply watching a few games and highlight packages, even an amateur hockey enthusiast (such as myself) can clearly see he has tons of adjustments to make to be a star in the NHL.

High level north american hockey is won by puck possession, battles on the wall and working the puck to the slot. Like an anchor from the dots around the wall, working towards the slot. He scores mostly by posting up on the off side half wall. He will have to change that to be a superstar in the NHL. The question is how will he adjust? I am curious myself. This does not mean he can't, or won't. He absolutely could be the best player coming out of this draft class. He was and is the biggest wildcard out of the big 3 (Now I guess big 4).

As far as I know he could make these adjustments today and take all of 2 games to realize that his current bag of tricks won't be enough. He could take off tomorrow. But at least can Laine fans now see what some people were questioning?

Because it's not a quote from Laine himself.

I just saw twitter referates, those are pretty much worthless. Where's the actual quote with actual quotation marks(I believe fabricating those is illegal)?

I didn't see any at the time but it's of course possible I missed it. Of course, me looking up every piece of Laine news I could find makes that slightly less likely than usual.

You didn't catch my point. I think McDavid is fantastic and otherworldly, but he had an off game last night. Judging him based on that one game is silly. It's also silly to judge Laine in such a small sample.

Still, I think you have misread Laine's play in the first two games. He certainly kept up with the speed of the game; at least as much as most of the Finnish players. He was actually very solid with the puck, with good confidence and excellent pinpoint passing. He was doing that against a much, much better team than Team NA has faced for their first two games. The competition has been apples and oranges. Not many forwards are going to look dominant against that Swedish defense. More than a few will look pretty darn good against the Team Europe defensive pylons.

Nah, we got Granlund and Kontiola and know we can live with disappointment.

... or whose potential disappointment are you worried about?

He still got 4 years 9 months left to be Ovi.
