People lose sight of the fact that these are 18 year old kids. They're going to have an adjustment period before they really get going

Edit:
Swedes have done a good job cutting off the angles. Laine either needs to be proactive in his movement so they can get him for a shot or someone needs to break the D down to create the hole to find Laine. On smaller ice its a lot easier to cut off that cross-ice pass, which teams are going to focus on doing to Laine due to his shot. Its only his second game on small ice, against a defence with elite mobility. With better diagramming, weaker defenders and time he'll figure it out.

Pretty much covers it.

It's a bit unfair playing him on the top line from game one. This is a new level for him and it puts a lot of unneccessary pressure on him to produce.

Barkov is the right C for him, but Jokinen is the wrong W like he was at the Worlds already, the competition was easier so they still could manage there. More speed.
Marjamaki makes a change to that line and it's Lehtera-Barkov-Jokinen, no one wants to see that.

Marjamaki needs to start playing Laine-Barkov smarter, they should be the line that goes on the ice after killing the penalty, and use them more in the offensive zone draws.
And I'd like to see Ristolainen play with them, he's our best defenseman and can make a pass and start the play quick.

It's nice to see how he's progressing game by game. He looked better than previous game.

That's actually fiction instead of reality. The line# doesn't seem to matter to Marjamäki. Koivu's line is actually the first line in the team. They play nearly every other shift plus power plays. Barkov seems like he's being benched if you look at how he's being used when compared to Koivu, which is utterly odd considering he's probably already better than than Mikko. Another observation is that Laine and Barkov seem to get third line minutes on 5 vs 5 which is kind of a shame really. Also Jokinen doesn't work well with Barkov and never really has so it's even more odd that they insist keeping them together. I'd much rather see someone like Granlund, Aho or Donskoi replace the guy but I don't see it happening.

I agree that he did look better, especially in the third period. However, it concerns me that he fails all his shots. He hasn't had a single good shot yet and doesn't seem to even try to shoot that much. I really would hope that him changing his stick brand didn't just ruin his shot.

Aho was amazing in the Worlds this summer and is an exceptional talent, so I don't understand why he has been scratched the last 2 games. Result of pecking order from older, more established Finn players?

Aho is a jack of all trades -player, so Marjamäki keeps him as a spare who can substitute pretty much anyone straight up in case of injuries/severe struggling.

I'd try him instead of Teräväinen in the last exhibition game, though. He was better than last time but I'm still not sold. Korpikoski has done a good job in his role; lays out big hits and digs the puck from the corners well.

I see. Thanks for the insight. And to be clear, other people called him bad, not me, but I agree it's probably due to unreasonable expectations. The only thing I'd say is concerning from a purely stat-watching perspective is the SOG + PP time.

One of the reasons Ovi is the best goal scorer of all time is because he also leads the league in SOG pretty much every year (iirc). High shot volume is obviously necessary to be a high goal scorer so I'd hope Laine can put the puck on the net more often, especially with the time and space available on the PP.

Yeah, the overhyping in Finland makes my head hurt. His first two games on smaller ice against a full NHL top 50 defense are not going to be easy and delightful to watch, but hey, Finnish media (=total and utter ****) takes every opportunity.

As for the PP, it should be mentioned that Laine plays in the same PP unit as Vatanen. As a RHD, he seems to prefer passing the puck to the opposite side from Laine. That's one thing which reduces his chances. I'm not sure if there's a way to fix that, since Ristolainen is the other D playing on the power play, who's also right handed. But I hope that they figure something out.

This is Finland so vets get often too much love.

Eh Korpikoski is a lot more reliable in 4th line role than Aho, specialy against top NHL players at this point.

They could move someone from the 3rd line to 4th line and move Korpi out.

He needs to adapt his game a bit 5v5. His signature slot one-timer won't work very often on the smaller ice outside of the PP.
With his elite shot, he'll be fine. Some posters need to dial it back and don't expect a 60-70 pt rookie campaign

Good that Laine's introduction to the NHL is playing essentially against an all star defense. No team he ever faces in the NHL will have a top to bottom roster like Sweden. This tournament will hopefully increase his chances of having a good season by facing the best competition right away (like swinging with two bats on deck)

Not necessarily top 30 d-men in the 3rd pairing, but cup contenders tend to have very strong D all the way, some pretty close to an OEL-Hjalmarsson -pairing.

The only pairing close to OEL - Hjalmarsson in the NHL is Hedman - Stralman, and those guys certainly do not play on the bottom pairing.

Facing Karlsson, Stralman and Hjalmarsson on the Swedish D is a bit more challenging that facing Hunwick and Polak and Carrick on RD, as an example.

The Ds he's mostly been playing against have been OEL-Hjalmarsson, yeah. He did actually manage to hit OEL so that he fell over.

No team in the NHL has a top4 like Sweden has, Sweden has 3 elite #1D's, 2 1/2D's and #2D.

Feel like it would be better if Laine were to start off in the AHL.

Sure.
