He got a goal which is nice, and he had some good shifts, but there were some bad shifts as well.
1. Many times tries to take it out of the zone himself and fails.
2. Bad long passes resulting in turnovers.
3. Just invisible out there at times.

Started to see him play a lot more confident a few games ago, but last few games he hasn't been playing like that. That being said, even with him not playing to his full potential he's getting his chances.

Almost sounds like he could get tired sometimes :). He looked good today after a little break, he looked mediocre in previous back to back games. Go figure. They are still mostly winning despite rough schedule and injuries. And the league leading 12 goals are helping.

Today he wasn't playing the neutral zone as well as he has before. I wanted to see him make quicker moves, he was a bit better there on the 3rd.

He definitely has that skill to disappear(in a good way) in the offensive zone and just suddenly appear and be deadly.

How wrong am I if I go from memory,

5+1 on pp,
1 OT goal,
1 6-5 assist
6+3 5on5
?

Have anybody tracked how many 3rd assists he have, or assists to a quality goal scoring attempts of others?

Early glimpse to his consistency pattern has also becoming visible.

2,0,0,3,0,1,2,0,0,0,0,2,1,4,1,0,0,1...

I want him to be more aggressive. When he starts getting physical, finishing his checks, forechecks hard and stays up in the play more rather than peeling back to play defence he is a much better offensive player. I do understand that it has been drilled into him for some time to be responsible he is a very strong and physically imposing player and can cause a lot of turnovers when he's aggressive on the puck.

I'm hoping Laine grows to appreciate his size and strength. He's got the frame and athletics to be a physically imposing player.

Nice goal again for St.Patrik

He is so explosive in his play. It's incredible. Just so fun to watch.

Nine games without points. He'll become more consistent, im sure, but that is rough.

Patrik Laine's points in his first 18 NHL games:

Game#, date, Game, Period/OT, Time of point, Strenght, Goal Scorer/1st & 2nd Assist/Jets on Ice during a point

The list composed using official NHL Game-summary sheets, for making Laine's contributions more visible in relation to his linemates and line complements he has been playing with. Apologies for un-format of the list. :)

You are actually right on that one. With many of Laine´s goals you really need slowmo to fully appreciate and to understand what´s going on

Laine just has that ability to score....it looks like he's gonna be a perennial contender for the Richard trophy. What's more he isn't dependent on explosive speed and reflexes that can drop off really fast, he has the size and shot to be a force for a long time.

I'm happy with the Leafs pick of Matthews, but Laine is all he was advertised as and more so far. Gonna be fun watching his career.

Thing is though is that NHL scorers don't scream consistency like everyone always clamors for. NHL scorers score in fits and bunches, which is exactly what he's doing.

Crazy when people think that way.

I think there were only 3 players who are consistent almost every game.

Gretzky
Lemiuex
Orr

The rest they will get their points in bunches , off a few then points again.

The better you are the less scoring drought you have (all players will still have them). And you score multiple points in bunches.

Laine has consistency issues and his honeymoon in the NHL seems to be over as Goalies and D-men are better prepared for Laine.

He'll end the season at a 0.5 point pace or so and that is high end production for a rookie, but likely not enough for Calder this year. Just IMO of course. Could be wrong as I often have regarding Laine.

Some calculations. Laine's efforts compared to overall level of rookie players.

Patrik Laine, 18GP, 12G, 5A, 17P / GPG: ~0.667 / PPG: ~0.944

Total 320 points / 111 rookies
Total 972 games played individually by all rookies
Average ~8.76 games played by rookie
Total 101 goals scored by 53 rookies
Total 675 games played by rookie goal scorer
Average ~0.15 goals in game by rookie goal scorer (rookie GPG average for goal scorer)
Average ~0.1 goals per game in all games played by rookie (rookie GPG)
Average ~1.91 goals in all games played by rookie goal scorer
Average ~2.883 points scored by rookie
Average ~0.329 points in a game scored by rookie (rookie PPG Average)

Note that played games totals among rookies varies a lot.

Patrik Laine has scored ~11.89% of all goals, and ~5.31% of all points scored by rookie player.
Laine has scored in 9 out of 18 games played.

From NHL.com stats. Possible errors mine.

(NOTE: Do not ever do your calculations online using comment itself as a sketch notebook... :P)

Not to sidetrack the discussion too much, but Mario was a clear step below Gretzky and Orr in terms of consistency. It's not a subjective difference either, Gretzky and Orr were on a different level when it comes to sustained peak.

Morrissey has been the only guy to give him good passes. He's a leftie so there's that.

Haven't seen him blast a proper one timer yet. I think the only one that I've seen went off the post against Calgary in the preseason.

Teams are not giving him that space, for that one timer. He has had some nice passes but defenses are closing on him immediately.

He's had the space on powerplay.
But it seems like using his one timer isn't a plan now.

I've noticed after the Dallas 3 goal game he has taken a more of a playmaker role, almost feels like he wants to show his teammates he's a team player.
He has left lots of shots untaken.

I don't know how someone can say he wasn't that good in the last game. Laine was creating so many chances that he could have had 1+2 or 1+3 should Scheifele, Buff & co finish his crisp passes. Eventually they'll start bagging those chances and he'll get assists. Laine showed some pretty brilliant puck handling as well. Such fun to watch and think how much easier it'll all look for him in a few years.
