I was just thinking that its really a miracle Laine survived the junior years in Finland. He has been criticised throughput his career because he simply wanted to score goals and be the go-to guy in every team he has played. He was a very selfish player throughout his junior years, and it was really a tough thing to swallow for many coaches, players and parents. (Even he himself admitted that he was very arrogant and probably quite difficult player to deal with). We tried to put him down, time and time again. Still he managed to ignore the crap (with a help of some people) and just did his thing.

And here is the result. Of course it required the two NHL hattricks for the last doubters to shut up, but now there is not one single person in Finland who isnt a fan of Laine. Hopefully case-Laine makes us a bit more open minded in the future for different kind of players.

I'm just wondering how many players our great system has suffocated during the years...

A great post which a) begs the question: Did YOU personally deal with Laine during his junior career in Tappara? and b) ignores the biggest of all ironies involved in his strange case; namely that he played goalie until he was 12 yo or something. That is really mindboggling. The kid started to play hockey as he knows it now not earlier than during his early teens. Incredible talent.

Didn't he play both positions until twelve so it ain't as big of a deal.

Also Laine's mother's determination I heard deserves some acknowledgment in Tampere's sports circles.

Isn't she the "Kessel mom" of Finland hockey. I thought Laine's mom was known for crazy antics such as screaming at coaches and petty antics (not that that's rare, GTHL hockey is a circus in that regard too).

Laine changed from Ilves to Tappara at the age of 9 and started instantly playing against 11 year olds. Has not played as goalie since because those teams have designated goalies. I know he said something different in interview but it's not true.

This is pretty much it thought I bet she was worse than Kessels mom but she has slowed down it a lot.

Her screaming at own team was also a thing back in juniors. And was Pate screaming back at her from the ice to "shut the **** up".

edit: I have to add that the whole family have been really determinated in making Patrik the next superstar. The whole family has been focusing in his "career" since Patrik was around 13. They moved next to icehall, mom quit work, Patrik quit school after 9. grade etc. etc.

Well, dedication is there for sure wow. But a bit of an overreaction to quit working to "help" (?!) the son to practice hockey while living next to ice hall what!??

Anyway it paid off and the "overenthusiastic" mom is a happpy camper now, I reckon lol. Yet, even less would have done. Usually it is better to let the kid do his thing and keep other things called family life as normal as possible... whatever

There have always been some kind aura around Laine, something 'demonic'. Maybe his background have something to do with it. Growing pains took some time and toll, but it was worth of it. Now it's his time to collect the bounty for that.

Hahaha

I mean he did move the stick towards the end but well, that was all on OEL.

Nice moving screen but yeah. Quite a fluke assist.

It was long overdue for his first fluke point finally. Flood gates are open now and more fluke assists and fluke goals also are to come while the 'deserved' ones won't go away except his s% will regress towards the average. Anyway fluke points will even it out. And he should be able to keep a PPG rate the whole season. Si si.

I like the way you think.

I've always thought he resembles a villian from the Harry Potter series.

Sorry guys, I know I can be sometimes very hazy and ecclectic in my comments about Patrik. Part of it is I can't often found suitable English words for saying exactly what I mean.

However, there is some kind personality trait in Pate that is rarely seen anywhere in professional sports. A quality that seems to escape all kinds attempts to define it.

Often I have feeling that Laine just makes another good game without much flashy moments or general visibility amidst a game. Then, suddenly, like out of nowhere something happens. It's like he would've been just silently processing something in his mind doing routine stuff and... then - Zap -, in a second he gets some kind supreme executive order 66 to his Black ops. combat model processors and battle sensor circuitry... One can expect anything from him in that mode.

My point is there but does that make any sense?

Laine is a damn stud. Watching him in the Arizona game, the moves and the decisions he makes are top-level stuff. His passing is quite a treat to watch as well.

Put all that into a big frame, and wow, you have a future top 5 player.

Somehow I feel this is exactly what happens.

I'll teach that damn finnish rookie a lesson...

I was thinking the same.

Reconstruction of the situation, pretty much:

"Damn Fin rookie's getting way 2 much attention.. I'll show him how REAL superstars play.. yeah im gonna pass it right trough your forecheck son.. look at this sick saucer and lear... WAIT.. I wasn't for real give it back guys oh **** that doesn't even count I wasn't serious"

He had 3 real good chances against Arizona. One he passed where he probably should have shot.

All in all the Jets forwards didn't look to engaged compared to the game against Dallas. For some reason I think they wanted to save some fuel for Colorado. Think we see a physical team come out tomorrow. Laine should be more among his element there.

Laine: 8 points in 4 games
Matthews: 1 point in 7 games

WPG and Finnish fans had to endure the Matthews 4 goal game and gloating that ensued. Laine is crushing it, hopefully you guys are enjoying Laine clearly outplaying Matthews right now.

This just doesn't happen in hockey anymore but it is happening. Laine currently 6th in NHL in points, 1st in goals after 15 games as a 18 year old rookie. Though it is still a small sample. He is killing it right now. There is no denying that.
