Are you sure about that? Historically the penalties for tampering have been very severe. (Which is NOT to say that I think the Leafs are guilty of tampering or that any such guilt could be established, just that the penalties are not insignificant and Vesey's value is uncertain at this point.)

Pretty tough to prove anything a father does with his son as tampering. Maybe if higher Leafs management got tied into it somehow, but beyond that I can't see a case going anywhere.

Yes, but it makes it extremely uncomfortable if he's commenting in public about what his son should do. Even with the addendum 'as a father', it's very noticeable when he comments in public about how his son shouldn't sign with the Bruins. If I'm Lou Lam, I talk to Vesey Sr. and get him to stop saying anything that hints at tampering.

Lou is so sneaky.

Wouldn't be surprised at all if he was tampering but nobody will ever catch him. Loophole Lou.

If people think discussions don't happen with other teams players/prospects across the league, they're extremely naive.

I'm not so sure Vesey will sign in Toronto, but if he does there'll be no tampering related punishment.

I still stand by what Dave Starman said a few weeks back

Chicago
Boston
Toronto - he felt Toronto is the longest shot of these choices as top American kids aren't running to go play there..regardless of a brother who might never sign, and a dad NOT in upper management.

it comes down to Chicago and Boston for various reasons - Chicago has winning, opportunity immediately, and Kane, Toews, Hossa, and Panarin to play with..

Boston has hometown, likely opening as well, and some skill to play with too...but hometown pressure is something to really think about.

its a tough choice for this kid, but the Hawk are quietly hiding in the bushes right now waiting to pounce on announcing Vesey to the Hawks August 15th!

HF implodes following announcement

that thing about Toronto has to be one of the dumbest things I've read. We literally got Casey Bailey from the NCAA and he's American and was highly coveted by other organizations. Sure he's not great, but that disproves the logic of not getting American kids to come here. Besides, Toronto is probably one of the best cities to live in as a young adult and this is coming from someone that has travelled through much of the US. Being Canadian/American has almost zero impact on a player's motive to join an organization, if anything the chance of success is weighted much higher.

here's a tidbit of what Marcus Stroman had to say about Toronto:

when I got drafted by the Blue Jays out of Duke in 2012, I was pretty upset about it. I didn’t want to go to Canada. I didn’t know anything about Toronto. All I knew was that it wasn’t New York, where I’m from. It wasn’t Duke. It was Canada. It was a different country.

But like I said, to understand Toronto, you have to really experience Toronto. You have to be there.

When I got called up in 2014, that’s when I got to truly experience Toronto, and I learned that it’s such a hip and trendy city — very up on the times. Perfect for a young guy like me. It’s a small city in the sense that it’s not overwhelming. I live right downtown, so I’m a five-minute walk from the Rogers Centre or a Raps game or a Leafs game. I’m 10 minutes from the sickest restaurants in the city.

I just fell in love.

If college kids are smart they go to NYR. With all early picks dealt they could jump to top of prospect depth charts

I'm glad Jimmy Vesey decided to do what he felt was best for him.
It was a tough decision.

I can never fault a kid for wanting to finish his college degree and share in the school experience.

Your only a collegiate athlete once.
His coach Ted Donato who went to college and was a US Olympic player and Nhler himself agreed.

Vesey said that he wanted to go back and graduate Harvard.

He was also picked in round three.
As a free agent he will make more money.
Pro hockey can wait another year and he'll get in the weight room and get stronger.

I just don't see how Vesey signing with the Leafs would be tampering.

The player is well within his legal rights to walk away from Nashville, which he did.

He is now considered a free agent.

Free agents are allowed to sign with whomever they choose.

The player is well within his legal rights to sign with any team in the NHL.

I can't imagine Lou and Shanny were too pleased to hear an employee speak publicly about this, father or not. Talking to your son privately is one thing, but to publicly say he shouldn't sign with Boston is unbelievably stupid and could be tampering.

Exactly. I wouldn't be surprised if Poile fired off an e-mail about this immediately.

A player can go wherever the hell they want. Whether a GM offers a contract to them is an entirely different thing.

Let's see. *looks at USCHO stats page* 1.39 vs 1.87ppg. Not very comparable to me.

I don't know how Connor did not win this with the numbers he put up. Who in the world votes for this?

They changed the rules this year. The award went to "the best player, who stayed in school for four years, who was less productive than his junior year and was a leader at an Ivy League school". There are not a lot of these guys left anymore, so they went with him. Instead of going with the "best player", Kyle Conner.

hockey Hall of Fame writer (and one time member of HF Boards before those loveable Bruins fans attacked him and drove him off) Kevin Paul Dupont tweeted it out...he's got a bunch of tweets from the Hobey Baker from his dad the kid winning

If Jim Sr listens to the radio or reads the Broons HF Boards site he would recommend Winnipeg over Boston- and since Jim lives about 15 minutes from da Garden (I'm 18 miles and they are two towns ovah) he probably hears those Bruins fans calling in to complain all things Bruins 24/7.

Boston may finish with 95 points and if you listen to the radio they are the 0-16 Detroit Lions from a few years back

here is hoping Jimmy is like most kids and dont listen to their parents

Thanks for the response and great info.

Hope he picks Boston.

Everybody is an expert on college hockey all the sudden.

Congrats to him for winning the award. I haven't seen enough of either of them to get all indignant about it. I'm sure everybody in this thread has though.

This is incorrect. In August he will be able to sign with any team for the same ELC, with the same bonuses, that Nashville offered to him. If money was a concern in the decision at all, he did miss out on the opportunity to burn off the first year of that ELC right now and get closer to his second contract.

He never said he didn't want to be a Predator.
Now that he's a free agent he can choose whoever though

With how pissed Pollie is, it's clear he's not going with NSH, even in free agency. Pollie sounded off this already.

Just a reminder for all those stating that Vesey is a free agent. No. He is not. He is the property of the Predators until August 15. He won't be a free agent until 15th of August. If they wanted, and found a suitor, the Preds could trade Vesey's rights right up until August 14.

Well, there are several things: One, very rarely does the award ever go to a freshman. Two, it's not a points trophy, nor is it purely a performance trophy, off ice character and player attributes are also factors. Third, Vesey played on a weak team against tougher opposition, while Connor played on a stacked team against weaker competition, so stats alone cannot necessarily be compared straight across. Also, Vesey does have more goals in the NCAA over the last two years than any other player. Impressive.

Why would Vesey accept a trade when he can choose where he wants to go?

What's the incentive?
