I never really paid much attention to it, but can anyone explain why the August 15th date?

I mean that is well after the draft and free agency, you would think teams would want to know if they can land a kid like this during free agency and not after when roster spots get filled.

'never understood it to be honest.

It used to be earlier (Schultz signed June 30th). I think they pushed the date back to essentially give the team that owned the players rights more time to try and sign the player (I believe it was a pretty quick turnaround after the player declared they were leaving school).

The NHL wants players to sign with the team that drafts them but can't punish them too harshly or else they might draw the ire someone on the labour side of things. August 15 doesn't prevent the player from earning any money but removes certainty from the player's side.

It has always been August 15 for kids that graduate. Schultz was June 30th because of the wonky wording of the rules before the current CBA.

The same Schultz rules are still in place in the current CBA. The difference between Schultz and Vesey is one left school before their senior year and the other stayed in school through their senior year.

Boston And Toronto are strong favorites. Buffalo and Chicago are outside contenders.

How are Buffalo and Chicago "outside contenders"? The reports were always Boston, Toronto, and Buffalo, and since the Sabres traded for his rights it's only become more clear with Vesey's camp saying Buffalo was always on the short list. If anything Toronto is the outside chance, but for some reason people think it's a forgone conclusion because his dad is a scout for them, even though he's a scout that lives in Boston.

If I had to put a percentage on it

Boston - 40 percent

Sabres - 35 percent

Rangers - 15 percent

Toronto - 5 percent

Other team not on the list - 5 percent

A few months ago, it was 100 percent Bruins, but some things have changed internally in Vesey's camp that have made him rethink his decision about going with his hometown team.

30/30/30/10 Boston/Buffalo/Toronto/Chicago

Bucks convention and picks the Windy City.

To win a cup in his first year along the Calder.

Like my dream?

He then leaves for Boston for his first big contract year 3.

He won't sign with Toronto, Lou won't give him the bonus' he wants.

However, if he doesn't just want the money, do you go to a declining Bruins team, or a team coming out of a rebuild who also employs your brother and father?

Hell, I think most people would choose a team with a chance of being good, rather than another who is just entering theirs.

At the moment Flyers LW depth has Raffl on the top (Schenn RFA). The team rebuilds while making the playoffs, and has arguably the best D and G prospect pools + some really good F prospects. Gotta think he would have Flyers on the table too.

Leafs left wing looks pretty weak on the 2nd or 3rd line. He wouldn't have too much trouble cracking the line up there if he's actually NHL ready. The only potential problem in Toronto is if LL doesn't want to give out bonuses while everyone else will. Considering the only contracts team can offer Vesey are identical it'll seriously hamper the Leafs chances of signing him.

Unless of course Shanahan is a wizard.

Zaitsev got bonuses

Then why did they trade for exclusive rights to speak with him before free agency?

They've met with him now. They waited until they were done with FA and the draft. They met last week for two days in Boston.

If I were Vesey, and Chicago was interested, I go to Chicago. Good chance to play for the cup. Good chance to cash in on a big contract in 2 years. The only drawback is that it's likely only a 2 year gig there. But if you want to eventually end up somewhere, Chicago seems like a perfect choice for 2 years.

But obviously I'm hoping he picks Buffalo.
