So lots of people? Good answer well supported.

It's supported by the fact that it's true. This is literally available to anyone who waits out their protected period.

These are all completely different cases. And yes im aware that every year ufa's are signed the circumstances around this case are completely different. Its a punk move if in fact he was dishonest with his intentions to start with. I was responding to the statement that he has earned this right. How did he earn this? By waiting 4 yrs and being dishonest with the organization that drafted him? Sorry but i dont see how that earns him any special rights. Like i said in another thread Eric Lindros didnt want to play for Quebec and he got ripped apart for it. But at least they were able to get a return on there asset. And many people thought Lindros was a punk most of his career for that still. Yet as long as its the NCAA route this is acceptable behavior and he shouldnt be branded the same way??

How does one earn UFA status in your eyes? I see it earned by qualifying to become a UFA, which he will have achieved once August 15 hits. He could have signed already and made a million more dollars than he has now, but he hasn't done that. Questioning the ethics behind him telling the Preds that he would sign is irrelevant to whether he has "earned" UFA status.

All the negative backlash he's been receiving for not being 100% up front with Nashville is warranted.

But the character attacks are unfounded.

This is a really smart kid, he clearly has strong convictions as to why he would want to test free agency and not take the deal Nashville is offering (a spot in the top-6 on a playoff team and a year burnt off his ELC). The ONLY reason I could see for him making such a bold move after giving every indication he would sign with Nashville, is that he feels very strongly about being able to choose the city and organization he signs with. To me that could be none other than the Boston Bruins.

It makes total sense to me. Boston sorely needs complimentary wingers in the Top 6. Eriksson is likely leaving as a UFA and I doubt they'll get any asset in return for that. So this is a huge coup in that sense for the B's. I personally couldn't be more happy for Vesey if this is how this plays out. A chance to play for your beloved hometown NHL team is just the total icing on the cake after everything he's achieved in his NCAA career. I hope he is a great player for them for a long time!

I was asked to show examples of players getting free agency without playing in the NHL, who cares if they are different?

EVERY player is different. Each league has rules. And just how do you earn free agency in your eyes? IS 23 years old ok? 25? 30? Never? What is the magic date that a player should be a free agent in your eyes? Or should a plyer simply be forced to sign a contract with whomever drafted him or rot in purgatory forever if he doesn't, something that is not only illegal, it is also wrong, something none of us would stand for in our own lives and removes all negotiating power from the player in question.

I agree with you that Vesey should have been more upfront about his intentions from the sounds of things but that's just being a dick. There's not much you can implement into the CBA to prevent someone from being a dick.

Lol yeah i guess youre right. I dont like how its becoming more common. I guess id prefer he became an RFA so that at the very least Nash gets compensation. Also would force players to he honest with the team that drafted them.

Too bad for Nashville of losing a 3rd round asset for nothing.
Good for Vesey for staying and getting his degree..
Can't blame him for choosing to pick his spot after putting in 4 yrs of post draft hockey.
Small picture view - Simply a dick move to spur the drafting team... but there is a bigger picture involved.

Kid is going to have his game picked apart nicely here... lightning rod effect of this story drawing so much attention.

Every player falls in three categories for me.... 1. Complete indifference 2. Cheer for 3. Cheer against.
Outside of my own team or players on rival teams it doesn't take much to slide a player from category 1 to either category 2 or 3.
Could be a highlight reel play... could be a cheap shot... could be a story in the paper about a guy helping someone change a tire.. whatever..

All this hype and back and forth drama has set me to cheer against him.
Wouldn't mind seeing him quietly fade away in the AHL. Seems fitting for how noisy his signing has become. Nothing personal... just an annoying story now.
But can't say i won't be following him now

Stinks for the Preds, but blame the CBA, not Vesey, if you don't like it (and I don't like it).

If he did actually state his intention of signing with Nashville, so what. Contracts are written and signed, not verbalized and sealed with a handshake.

He's probably a 2nd line player best case scenario. Nothing to get worked up about.

Really? A 22 year old 2nd liner who'll be signed for 3 years @ 925k?

Sounds pretty damn good to me. That's like a free early-mid 1st round draft pick who's already been developed.

Eh, well it kind of shows poor character if a man deceptively says he's doing one thing but ends up doing completely opposite. In real/business life there are certain nouns that are used to describe such people. Not saying it applies here, as I don't know the whole story, but it doesn't look that good if what Poile says is true.

Also verbal agreements are about as binding as written ones, though it is naturally a lot more difficult to prove it afterwards.

Vesey has ties to other NHL franchises by the way, including having a father who works for an NHL team, a brother drafted by an NHL team, and a former coach (in the EJ) who works for a different NHL team. He has options and ties to a few--the Bruins are just one.

How many people have watched this guy play recently? Is he really going to walk into a 2nd line spot and not be out of place? It's a big jump to make going from the ECAC - NHL; is he one of the few who can step right in?

ECAC is hovering around the 3rd or 4th in terms of the most competitive conferences in hockey.

3rd line at best to start

That is a flawed way to look at it. Because although the other conferences may have better top end prospects, the ECAC is the oldest conference age wise and a much harder league to score in. Vesey has a lot of versatility to his game, can play many different roles

As bad of a PR move as this was, I think Vesey and his agent made the right move for his long term growth. Look how stacked Nashville is upfront with NHL caliber players. Guys like Watson and Sissons can't get regular time, and Fiala and Kamanev are knocking on the door. Realistically where does Vesey fit on that squad? This year? Next? He's going to have a better opportunity to succeed and learn on the job with a Toronto or some other team with less NHL depth than he would with Nashville.

We should wait to hear his side of the story before we judge him. I have had people wrong me, treat me poorly and think that I was too young to notice. I will choose to think that they (Nash) did something like that to him and that he just bided his time to get even.

Where would Jimmy Vesey go in this year's draft?

With all the speculation regarding Vesey, where would he land if he forced back into this years draft. Would he go top 5? top 10? late lottery? late 1st? I'm interested where people would slot him.
