I don't understand what kept him out of the first round but admittedly this is my first time watching him

Apparently he bombed the interviews and their were people questioning how translatable his offense would be at the next level. Based on his OHL play I had my doubts too but I'm starting to think that he's a bit bored in that league. I also think LA is a really good fit for him.

I wouldn't be surprised if he makes the NHL as early as 2020-2021.

I think it's that he is an awkward young guy with some tics, and that might have put some off. I don't recall anything about him being a behavior problem in junior hockey, or a bad team mate.

Reminds me a bit of Jim Eisenreich, though I think he had a far worse case of nerves, if not straight out Tourettes.

I thought Kaliyev looked big, and strong on his skates. Should be good enough to take a beating in front to pick up garbage goals. His vision and passing was vg to excellent. Goes without saying that he can score.

I thought Lavoie looked more like what I expected Kaliyev to look like.

I'm happy we drafted this guy and Fagemo.

Real talent right there.
Was a lil pissed we passed him up at 29... was extra salt that the kings ended up grabbing him(granted I like the Tracey pick too)

Seems like he should end up top 5 goal scorer in this draft pretty easily.

Honestly kings have killed it the last 3 drafts... and I think they are in a pretty good position to draft high this year/sell some assets. I feel like adding 1 of those top end wingers (AL, holtz, Raymond) to go with all their young centers would be huge for them.

the one thing that rarely gets mentioned about Kaliyev is he is a rink rat. the kid is always on the ice, always trying to work on things and improve..I couldn't give two shits about his interview skill or whatever was perceived in that regard, talk to his damn coaches, all of them praise Kaliyev for being a hard working kid that you have to force off the damn ice...those types of kids make it despite of their skating flaws/concerns or whatever else.

Obviously, you dont develop those skills by not practicing them. The kid has a 95 overall offensive skillset, hes turned up to 11 in shooting and a solid 9 in passing and hands, theres a lot of work in there.

His junior coach had awesome words for him.

Scouts spend months, and in most cases years, following these players. I doubt that one summer tournament a month after the draft has changed the opinion of a single scout. They already knew what he was good at against his age group. It is projecting to the next level that has scouts concerned. No player magically erased his deficits in the last 2-3 months. Whatever they were on June 22nd, they still exist. I realize this is summertime but there has been waaaaay too much emphasis placed on the performance of ALL players in this tournament.

Time will tell, I'm just really surprised he dropped to the second round. It was difficult to predict where he'd go but I was sure he would go in the 1st round.

You should have seen the absolute meltdown I had when we took Bjornfot instead of Kaliyev...only to hear later that it was a calculated gamble. Had to shut up for the rest of the draft

I would've probably reacted the same way man

What a draft for the Kings though.

In your defense, I think half the board had a meltdown after the Kings picked Bjornfot, and it was a pretty contested debate even though Kaliyev was still available after day one.

If what you're saying is true, it contradicts one of the main criticisms of him; that he has poor work ethic.

That's a huge misconception.

A lack of effort and urgency on the defensive side of the puck has always been his main issue, but that somehow telephone gamed into him having a poor work ethic.

He is a lot like Andrei Kostitsyn in terms of not being able to pronounce their name and determine their future.

I liked the bjornfot pick... i think hes a bit under rated.

Byt thats irrelavent now that you ended up getting both

I was thinking he was like andrei as well, all tools with no toolbox. But we will see in time.

Kostitsyn had one of the strongest wrist shots in the NHL, really had some nice tools but he didn't have a good understanding of the NHL game.
He was also built like a tank and could wreak players without giving it a second thought.

It was really a shame with the language barrier and NA hockey IQ issues , could have been a very productive player.
