I do find it strange we have different reports where he was born

Makes sense actually, happens semifrequently in Russia/former USSR countries. Everyone laughed at Grigorienko possibly being an overager as well until he fizzled exactly like one.

I dont think the Kings would have taken him in the second round if they really believed he was 20. Dont think he would be even drafted.
I dont understand how its so hard to figure this out, I was watching an interview with him and the journalist was talking to him about him being born in Uzbekistan and he said yes. So, when did they come to US ?

I don’t give a crap if he is born on an iceberg to a walrus and a penguin. As long as it comes to LA and lights the lamp I will be happy
True that but if the walrus and penguin conceived him in 1999 than I doubt he will light the lamp.

That is the point.

Pavel Bure for one, as far as I know he was born in Minsk, Belarus, but his birthplace is generally given as Moscow which is his hometown.

Regarding the age rumor, it is worth noting a Vancouver media outlet tried to spread the same rumor last year about Svechnikov, before the draft.

I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure it was CanucksArmy.com, and they took down the article after the ensuing backlash.

I thought the islanders would take him as John Gruden there assistant coach was his coach 2 years ago. The fact they passed on him makes me think there is some red flags with this kid as 50 goals is hard to pass up. Who knows about the age thing though. If anyone is gonna know this kid inside out it’s his former head coach.

The fact he was picked in the second round says enough. Even if the Islanders had picked him earlier.

Was picked earlier than DeBrincat though, so whatever his red flag it's apparently not as severe as lack of size.

There are actually a lot of quotes from NHL scouts in HockeyProspect's Black Book regarding Kaliyev and what you posted above; basically a lot of them says that they don't/can't take the Top Prospects testing seriously when the results come back like that, because all of them thinks he's a bad skater.,

I'm not saying the testing is good or bad, but it is funny how dismissive scouts are of actual measured data when it doesn't conform to their eye test.

Statistically, Kaliyev is about as sure thing as there is, so in my opinion, every team that passed on him is somewhat narccistic in their perceieved ability to evaluate talent.

But he was picked earlier because of DeBrincat.

Narccistic? We've seen teams made bad calls on talented players with "attitude issues" all time time.

Yannetti gave an interview basically saying he doesn’t have any character issues, but he might have some compete issues. Whether that means he’s just immature, doesn’t always work hard in practice, or gets pissy when benched, I don’t know. But the kid is 17 (or 20, if you ask someone with a tin foil hat on) and it’s now up to the Kings’ development team to teach him how to be a professional.

When he scores a goal, he is also very laid back.

Something you notice more with people who are a bit lazy (like me).

Look, it's a swing for the fences.

If you hit, it's going deep into home run territory.

If you miss, you strike out along with all the other 2nd round picks that didn't pan out. Criticize the pick all you want, but I'll go ahead and take the excitement of anticipation as he strolls up to the box and be thrilled with it, thanks.

I am not sure how there is any miss there to be honest...even Yakupov was a NHLer for years prior to busting, as he is one of a handful of 17 year olds in the last decade to hit 49 goals or more from the OHL - Skinner, Stamkos, Tavares and DeBrincat..that is it. And now Kaliyev...this is one of the more ridiculous drops I have seen, and I am very positive this kid lines up with the Kings no more than 2 years from now. When you see the same recycling of senile dinosaurs getting GM and executive jobs, this is what happens - same with Zac Jones going in the third round lol..though when you look at what Chayka does in Arizona, I guess the senile dinosaurs don't look that bad in comparison..

Arthur Kaliyev looked confused and then pissed that he was passed over... He might have compete issues now but after this snuff and some years in the Kings system he is going to make a lot of people look foolish.

pretty sure this is what Arthur said when he was interviewed after finally getting selected:

He doesn't try when he doesn't have the puck essentially.

It has been well documented.

Wouldn't really say its something you can teach.

You can teach someone how to count. You can't teach them the will to learn how to count.
So there's a girl I knew for a long time. Always did poorly at school. Had to repeat a grade. Dropped out of high school. Some 6 years later, started high school again. Passed with extremely high marks. Got scholarship to a top uni in America.

You know what happens when you age? You mature.

I'd always bet on a 18-year-old maturing - a natural process - over an untalented prospect becoming an impact player.
