Not getting picked with the numbers he put up must be quite the kick in the teeth. I hope it motivates him to be a star for whoever drafts him.

Bruins fans seem pissed Sweeney passed on Kaliyev. Bruins didn’t lose game 7 due to lack of skill..:but lack of compete. Kaliyev screams high scorer but horrible 5v5. Possibly other issues.

Really shocking that nobody wanted him in the late first round. If he lacks motivation this should help with that. I think he’s going to make a lot of teams regret passing.
Or not.
Just look at Sean Day.

The problem with work ethic, is that it can't be taught. You have it or you don't.

And if for some reason you develop it, it's from within yourself, which, in short, is a crapshoot.

Man seeing him so disappointed really wanted me to feel sorry for him, but all of this will go away once he's drafted very early tomorrow.

Just look at Sean Day.
Day never really had motivation problems, the lad was just never talented to begin with and his flashiness skating style made him better than whatever he realistically was.

Eh? I disagree with this. work ethic is one thing that can be taught or changed.
Agreed, but I will say that it depends on the individual. Some players don't have, except something randomly clicks with coaching or something else which increases his work rate. Other players simply just do not have it and why there are still draft busts even though those busts are more talented than 90% of the rest of the world.

The thing with lowering him because of the compete is a double edged sword, he is already so good, imagine if he is willing to learn how to play the proper way and starts to compete a bit harder out there, he'd be an absolute beast. Otherwise, you are lowering him because of the social vibe which is dumb. You must believe his compete is an unfixable major issue which will bring his talent and physcial attributes to waste if you aren't drafting him in the late first or I don't know what you are doing.

Not sure if I agree. I’ve known plenty of slackers to eventually put it all together. I’m not saying he 100% will, I’m just saying I’d rather take a risk on a guy with this level of talent than take the safe play on far less talented players which is what a lot of GMs did tonight.

By all reports he has a great work ethic. He spends tons of extra time at the rink, apprently.

It's more that he just doesn't play with jam or urgency.

Like Alexander Daigle ? After he busted, Daigle later admits he he played without urgency & didn't care.

Kaliyev is like how Corey Perry fell so low in 2003 in first round except that Kaliyev didn't get picked in the first at all, both big guys who skate slow & score alot of goals.

Daigle wanted to be a celebrity not a hockey player.

He's always a ridiculous comparison for any prospect considering how unique that situation was.

Would have liked the Flames to take him at 26

full list of drafted players that put up 50+ goals in the CHL the first year they were draft eligible since 2001-02:

Anthony Mantha
Jeff Skinner

Patrick Kane
Sidney Crosby
Joffrey Lupul
Alex DeBrincat
Arthur Kaliyev(assuming he gets drafted)
Bunch of late birthdays there too, Kaliyev is among the youngest in the draft
