So what if the kid isnt going in to the corners to fight for the puck. If he learns it, first line material right there, if he don't then put him on second line with someone to feed him the puck and someone to retrieve him the puck. Cant believe he got passed on.

Edit: Congrats to LA!

As a Kings fan, I'm stoked to get him here. They need his type of offensive upside in the organization and with at least 2 years before the Kings may be decent again, he'll have plenty of time to work on his game.

Kaliyev should’ve gone in the early first. He’s going to show that scouts overthink things. They need to pay attention to the relevant base rate.

Did he maybe fall because of a questionable immigration status or even age? It seems peculiar that no source can nail down what country he was born in.

There's been a couple unsubstantiated rumors about his age from no-names who I assume have no sources. If the hockey media found any evidence to support reporting that rumor, I'm sure they'd be all over it because they'd love to play that angle especially as he fell. And if any of them did, I haven't seen it.

I think the reporting now is pretty consistent that he was born to Russian parents in Uzbekistan and they moved to NY when he was a baby. Could they have forged his papers? Sure, I guess anything's possible but I'm not sure why they'd have even considered it: if you believe the rumor, he was 3 -- why would his parents care to fake documentation and risk their immigration status just to say he was 1? What would they gain? In terms of immigration status, in what way? He definitely has an American passport. You can't play in the USAH Player Development Camps without documented citizenship and he's played in 3 of them.

One thing about "reporting" on youth hockey, and just the internet in general, is that it can be so lazy. The first source to document something about a young prospect, regardless of validity, is then lazily used around the hockey community as gospel. Just take Jack Hughes. It was pretty funny how long everyone thought he was Canadian because EliteProspects listed his nationality as Canadian because he was playing in Toronto - including some notable prospect/hockey reporters. This despite the fact that his brother was playing for the NTDP at the time, his parents were both known commodities and easily searchable with documented backgrounds, and he was one of the best known 14/15 year old prospects in the world.

Can't believe we got Kaliyev and Turcotte. Bjornfot was also projected as a first round talent. Basically 3 first rounders.

Well the Kings had two first round picks and an early second, so I would hope that they would get basically three first rounders.

I think it has to do with his lack of skating speed & maybe he's slightly eccentric like Bryzgalov ?
